This is a "Dummie" question, but please some kind person help me to understand.... If I download an updated driver for a printer, and put it on My Desktop, does it do anything, or cause any problems, or does it just sit there doing nothing until I choose "Run" ???? And if I want to get rid of it, can I just put it into the recycle bin with nothing left on the computer to cause problems? If I do choose to "run" it, then does it overwrite the original driver that is now installed? And if I want to uninstall the updated driver, how do you do that? I have never understood completely what the connection is between the Desktop and the Computer operation...I always thought that it just holds things until you need to "run" them. I have had enough problems in the last few weeks with my HP 2210 printer, and trying to get it to operate properly...and since I accidentally downloaded IE-8, the printer does not completely operate properly. There was a patch for IE-7 that took care of the problem, so I may download the patch and reload IE-7. It is so frustrating! I don't want to buy a new printer or computer...otherwise mine works just fine. Thanks for any help and clear explanations you can give me. You all are the greatest to help us confused seniors to keep our computers working. Beth B
It would probably be helpful if you specify the programs you think are causing the problem. It does nothing, until you run it. Even then, there is NO problem with it being on the desktop, it will probably send it's install files to a temp folder before actually installing the drivers. I have NO IDEA why MS thinks your desktop should be clear of ALL things, but it's what they try to make you do. I DL ALL files to my desktop, which they share with many shortcuts. Once I decide if I need to keep a file, I'll either install it and delete it, or I'll install then move the file to a safer place.
Thanks, Kevin-- I guess I asked the wrong question or asked it incorrectly. These are not start-up programs, but my anti-virus and anti-malware programs. I am trying to access some files that others are able to acess, but I cannot. I though perhaps the configuration on these two programs were blocking my access to the files. Any further ideas? Thanks a lot.
I have just downloaded Firefox. I am having some trouble keeping some windows open when I close a second window. This is especially irritating when I am doing research on Rootsweb World Connect; then I lose the page when I bring up another window. Any suggestions?
Hi: Do you mean that you want to disable them from starting up when you boot your system? If so... You can go to... START >> RUN >> msconfig then select the Startup TAB and deselect those programs that you do not want to start when you boot up. The re-boot your system You just need to select them again and re-boot to get "back to normal" Regards, Kevin. Sorry for the blank message. I hit the wrong thing. Is there a way to temporarily disable a couple of programs which won't let me download something? Thanks.
Perhaps I should try that. I have received the same update message for years and when I say install I always get the message that the installation failed. I too have Windows XP. Try using the Firefox Tabs. Open a tab by pressing the mouse wheel with your cursor on the link you wish to open. A tab will appear just below the toolbars. To save that page, open the next page with the mouse wheel, and so on for as many times as you want ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mildred" <mmallek@charter.net> To: <computers@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 06, 2009 1:35 PM Subject: [COMPUTERS] Firefox :I have just downloaded Firefox. Hi Peter, It depends on what version of Photoshop you are using... I have CS3, so I will respond from my experience with that version. The easiest way... You can select the Custom Shape Tool (shortcut key U) and select one of the custom arrows (top of screen drop down)... there are quite a few of them available. You could also create a custom arrow of your own, if you have the Photoshop knowledge. Regards, Kevin. I hope it is alright to ask this question here as there are people here who understand all this computer 'stuff. Every morning for at least 3 months there has been the same patch from Microsoft waiting to be downloaded. It is --- Update for Windows XP (KB967715) Install this update to resolve an issue in which AutoRun features were not correctly disabled. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. How to Uninstall This software update can be removed via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Why does it come in over and over and is there something additional I should be doing?? Thank you, K Rizer
Problem seems to have solved itself. Well, actually I don't think there was ever a problem - except my impatience. After being out for a few hours I tried again and everything worked. Seems it just took some time for my subscription to the list to activate. Thanks to everyone who offered advice. Now I just have to learn German..... This is an update for WinXP 64, which you probably don't have, so it won't download. When I had a similar problem with an update, I went to Windows Update and hid the update. I'm writing a book and am using photos of graves and houses and need to put an arrow to point out the right grave and house so can anyone give me advice please on how I can do that using Photoshop? Peter
Not sure what system you are using but with Windows XP, go to Start Run - type in msconfig hit OK go to "start up" tab and uncheck the ones you don't want. If you are unsure of which ones to disable, you can go to http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php and put in the item and it will tell you if it's needed, not needed or user's choice. Hi Elaine, When I subscribed to the list I had to give my own password. I got an email back which required me to confirm my subscription by clicking on a link, which I did, so I think I've got that bit right. It's just so hard to be sure when the instructions are in German. Robyn ETM wrote: > Were you given a password when you signed on for > the mailing list?
