Dear Kevin, BudScan and all....thanks for the information about the desktop. I believe I understand you correctly, that something on the desktop is really just sitting there, waiting to be opened and used. I have a folder with a couple of downloads so I will get the one for the updated printer driver and store it there until such time as I want to try installing it again. One thing I am not sure about is: do I uninstall the soft wear for the printer and then install the updated driver...or do I just install the update and let it overwrite what is presently on the computer? Thanks so much for your help! Beth Bowling <snip> Hi Beth, The only thing it can do is to clutter your desktop with items. Hi ????? First I would question what the downloads are, firewalls and anti virus is there for a reason, it can throw up the sorts of problems that you describe but would want to be sure they are safe downloads before resorting to turning off a firewall If you are happy to turn off your protection, usually a right click on the icon in your task tray will give an option to close it down Another option would be to get someone you know had downloaded it to send it to you Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Thanks, Kevin-- > > I guess I asked the wrong question or asked it incorrectly. Hi Mildred I have been using Firefox for a while now, mostly favourably Not entirely sure what the problem is but suspect you may be using tabbed windows and losing other open tabs when closing a window I find the tabbed browsing very annoying and do not use it, I prefer a new window for each task/program or search If you go to Options (under Tools) in Firefox, select the *Tabs* button at the top, there are two options, open a new window or open a new tab, which is checked? There is also a check box below those "Warn me when closing multiple tabs" if thats not checked and you close a window with several tabs, it will lose those tabs which may perhaps be your problem ? I use Open a new window but that does not stop you opening a new tab within that window should you wish to (under file menu in the open window) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >I have just downloaded Firefox. I am having some trouble keeping some > windows open when I close a second window. Thanks to all of you who answered my question. I appreciate this list very much as I am not very computer literate and also am a little afraid to try something on my own. Thanks a bunch. I'll give it a try. Hi Bobbie, Yes... You can treat the Flash Drive like any other storage device with regards to adding or deleting files. There are a number of ways to delete all of the data on the Flash Drive... Method 1 ------------- a) Plug In your Flash Drive b) Open Windows Explorer c) Find the Flash Drive Folder (i.e. it may be D: or E: or F:, etc...) d) Click ONCE on the Flash Drive Folder e) All of the data on the Flash Drive will now appear in the Right Window f) Select all of the Files and Folders in the Right Window and Hit the DELETE Key Method 2 ------------- If you really do not want the data on the Flash Drive you can erase all of the data by formatting the drive... a) Plug In your Flash Drive b) Open Windows Explorer c) Find the Flash Drive Folder (i.e. it may be D: or E: or F:, etc...) d) Right Click on the Flash Drive Folder e) Accept the defaults (i.e. Capacity: <<size of your Flash Drive>>; File System: FAT) f) Click on the START button Be VERY CAREFUL that you are selecting the Flash Drive and BE SURE you have backed up any information you may need on the Flash Drive. Hope this helps... Regards, Kevin. On Tue, Jul 7, 2009 at 12:08 PM, Bobbie <bcsmith@centurytel.net> wrote: > > Sorry, hit the wrong thing. Sent to early. > > My question is about flash drives. Yes, just delete what you don't want as you would anything else. ie - plug in the drive and open it to view the files, then drag the ones you don't want to the trash or highlight them and hit delete. Yes, it's usually best to uninstall the old driver before installing a new one. And you can just delete any folders you create to store files, if you decide you no longer need the file, deleteing the folder will also delete any files in that folder.

Sorry, hit the wrong thing. Sent to early. My question is about flash drives. If you have a flash drive full with things you don't need anymore, can you empty them, or erase them and reuse them, if so how do you do this? I have a full flash drive but no longer want the information on it and would like to be able to reuse it with new info. Thanks in advance Bobbie

Hi Judith, Well, I have heard positive and negative comments on IE8. My opinion is that you should stick with what you are using now (IE6, IE7 ?) if you are satisfied with your browsing experience or simply use Firefox... this is my choice, speaking from a Web Design point of view, as Firefox is much more supportive of Web Design Standards, which means, to you as a user, that Web Pages will look better and act as the designer intended. That said, Microsoft has put out a detailed procedure on how to uninstall IE8 and revert back to IE6 or IE7... but you never quite know if you are getting back to EXACTLY what you started with, if you know what I mean !!! So, you could install it and, if you don't like what you see, remove it and reinstall IE6 or IE7. How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700 Final Point... if you want to stay the way you are and just stop the annoying request to update to IE8, you can follow these instructions... again, from Microsoft ! Toolkit to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 8 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=21687628-5806-4ba6-9e4e-8e224ec6dd8c&displaylang=en I hope this helps ! Hi Beth, The only thing it can do is to clutter your desktop with items. Personally, I prefer to keep a tidy desktop, just so I can find things... but that's me !!! To keep a lot of items on your Desktop, but keep it decluttered, you can always create "folders" on your desktop and drag your downloaded files to this folder to keep them organized. I have a folder on my desktop called "little used" where I keep all of the desktop items I don't access very often. I have also moved all of the programs I use on a day-to-day basis from my desktop to my Quick Launch Toolbar. This allows me to open a program at any time without going back to the desktop to click on the Program Icon. If you want to use this technique or are not familiar with the Quick Launch Toolbar, here is a link for more info... http://johnbokma.com/windows/quick-launch.html I just want to note one more thing. Your Desktop is actually a visual representation of a FOLDER on your Hard Drive. If you want to see this folder you simply need to Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the following location... C:\Documents and Settings\<<YOUR USER NAME>>\Desktop There you will see listed ALL of the Items you have on your Desktop. I hope this helps a little and please ask if anything is confusing !
