    3. Without a Unicode font, you won't be able to use Unicode characters. As you're using PAF, you might try asking in the PAF Forum at GenForum: http://genforum.genealogy.com/paf/ > In Word I have Arial, Arial Narrow, and Arial Black, no unicode MS.

    3. Hi Lila, Wouldnt it be simpler if you know that a macron denotes a double letter to just type in the two letters? Judith ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lila Garner" <lilagarner@hotmail.com> To: <computers@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 27, 2009 1:50 AM Subject: [COMPUTERS] Font question Is there any font or keyboard action that will create a macron over a letter? I found Maori font directions, but that won't work for me. I work with old German records--the year in question is 1736, but this practice spreads over a long period of time: when the scribe writes "Ana" he makes a line over the n, which creates a double-n, and the person's name is Anna. Another example: Nieman with a line over the final n, meaning Niemann. While n seems to be the most common, other letters are also written with the macron or line, so I need to figure out how to make that double line over any letter. What I really would like is an alphabet, the line over each letter, that I can keep on my desktop and copy and paste when needed. I'm not very adept at downloading and installing things and figuring out how to make them work. Thanks for any help. Lila

    3. Wow! I can't understand the barnhill link--'way to complicated for my old brain! :-) I don't have Works WP so I guess I'll have to do without the macron--and I seriously doubt, even if I could create it, that PAF's notes would accommodate it. If someone could create macron over n in Works, and send it privately in an attachment to LilaGarner@hotmail.com, I'd try to paste it in and see what happens. While I was searching for help, before I wrote to this list, I ran across a Wikipedia entry that says that a macron is used over the letter u in Old German Script, to distinguish u from n. That is not exactly the case: the diacrit over u to distinguish it from n is a Haken, a dip or a cup over the u. Since I'm not experienced in every area of Germany, the macron may be used in some regions that I haven't run across. Thanks for everyone's help. 3. In Microsoft Word (at least in version 2003) you type the letter, first, then insert the "Combining Diacritical Mark" from the Insert > Symbol dialog. Or, from the keyboard... To get a macron over a letter, type the letter followed by the Unicode followed by Alt-x, in other words (using the letter, "n," as an example), type: n0304 then hold down the Alt key and press x. This combination will only display in a font that recognizes the Unicode "Combining Diacritical Marks," such as Arial Unicode MS or Lucida Sans Unicode. Otherwise, you'll just get a little empty box because the font isn't capable of displaying the character. Whether or not this will work in PAF, I don't know, but it doesn't hurt to try. Diana P.S. The Unicode for an overline is 0305. > -----Original Message----- > > Date: Mon, 27 Jul 2009 08:00:09 -0700 > > To: computers@rootsweb.com > > From: trogs2@shaw.ca > > Subject: Re: [COMPUTERS] Font question > > > > In Microsoft Works Word Processor click on Insert/Special Character. > > With the Symbol tab forward look for the macron on the third line, > > ninth column. 3. I just found these instructions on another website. It works in Office Word. Make sure to put in the three spaces. "Ctl-F9 will turn on the equation editor, which give you editable brackets. Type in { eq \o(x,¯) } , it makes no difference if these can be Captials; there is a space between the q and the \. Do a shift-F9, which will toggle between your equation brackets and the symbol. The ‘o’ is the letter O to make an overstrike. You can italicize the x, the bar is macron under Arial." 3. Is there any font or keyboard action that will create a macron over a letter? Lila
