If you're willing to pay, I suggest getting your own domain name. If you're looking for a free email account, I would go with Google. If you find them hard to remember, (as I do), keep a file with just the first letter of the word you chose and the number for each. I thought it was a great idea!

I use KeePass. It's free (opensource). All I have to do is remember that one password and I have access to all others I have stored. One click also loads the site you want to visit and another key combination enters your user I'd and Password. I would not recommend storing your passwords in a text or MS Excel file as they can be easily viewed... Especially if stored on a USB Drive which can be easily lost. Regards, Kevin. What is the best/easiest way to store passwords for sites that are visited repeatedly? Some sites, especially financial, require at least 8 characters with specific requirements. Need a way to easily and safely store these and call them up when needed. Vanessa
I use a Word file on a thumb drive (flash drive) as most machines I use have MS Word on them. A plain text file which can be read by any plain text editor will work also. I just keep it in my pocket with me all the time. Hi Kevin Thanks very much for your links, the daniweb link was very useful. I downloaded the free Hijack this programme, created a scan and log file and deleted 3 files which had greasy palm in them. I have emptied temporary files and temporary internet files also. The uninstall list now no longer has the rebate catcher so I'm hoping that I have totally removed any trace of Greasy Palm. I am hoping that this has worked and that I won't have to go into the registry. Once again many thanks. Hi List, I'm trying to get a more-or-less permanent email address to attach to my 'Interests' in FHS journals. So far, two of the ISPs I used to use for dialup access have gone bust, and left me with a lot of people to inform re address changes. Now that I have broadband access I would like something more permanent, that isn't tied to any one ISP. Can any list member advise: 1. How do Hotmail & Gmail compare? 2. Are there any other options? 3. I understand that I can use POP and Outlook Express with Gmail; does that work with Hotmail too? 4. How do I get a Gmail address? Going to www.google.co.uk, then to the Mail tab seems to lead to being offered an address of the type joebloggs@googlemail.com. Is there a different route to get to joebloggs@gmail.com? Regards, John
Since the Ö showed up all right on print preview, I printed it with Cute PDF Writer (I downloaded and installed that after moving the doc on a flash disk to my laptop which already had Cute PDF Writer, then moving it back to the new PC). The umlaut shows up perfectly in the .pdf file. I also copied and pasted the .doc into my PAF notes, and the Ö transferred there okay. This is now "solved" although the "why" remains, and a corrupted file seems to be the best answer. Thanks much to all who helped!! Lila
John Something different. I have "Email for Life" from the Alumni Association of a university. I registered with them & picked a "user name" @tulanealumni.net. Everytime I change my "main" email address I notify them and in a couple of weeks my mail from mostly classmates & former students come to the new address. I use it as a secondary "permanent" address so people knew they could reach me through it. It had been my primary address but the mail forwarding computer was down for six weeks after Hurricane Katrina & I never started switching people back. Sometime there is an extra half hour delay for mail to arrive. But, for the rest of my life I will be able to get email as paulleblanc@tulanealumni.net . It might be worth looking into. Hi, I use gmail and have used hotmail. I like gmail because I can bring it into Outlook Express - not possible with the free hotmail. I am not bothered with any commercial etc. Go to www.gmail.com and on the right side near the bottom of the page is "create an account". The best way to insure that you have a permanent, unchanging email address is to get your own domain name. I own danishdemes.org, and it will be an unchanging email address and web site domain, regardless of my ISP or web host, as long as I keep up my payments for it. Hotmail and Gmail are independent of your ISP, but you are not independent of them. No company is immune to failure, so either one could go belly-up, sooner or later. I don't like "free" email accounts because they usually come encumbered with advertising, and I hate getting email with advertising in it. My reaction to such email is irritation at the person who is too cheap to get a paying account and is inconsiderate for spamming me. If you're trying to impress someone, it isn't the way to go. Bottom line: a permanent address is possible, but it will cost you some maintenance. I'm typing Alt + 0214, and it worked where Elisabeth Öhm is entered, but it won't show the umlaut on the line where Valentin Öhm is entered, just shows the plain O. I dropped Hotmail when I started having problems with it and IE -- the ones I sent 'disappeared'. into a black hole in the internet. I now use Yahoo with few problems. There are others also, not attached to ISPs. In the beginning gmail had problems, but I think they have been resolved - I don't use them. Hi Can someone on the list please help me. I subscribed to an on-line organisation "Greasy Palm" which pays money back when you buy using the internet through their site. I have tried to remove their "rebate catcher" ,a small programme which reminds you if you are looking at the web site of a retailer who subscribes to the Greasy Palm organisation, from my computer using "uninstall" in the control panel. Whenever I try to uninstall I get the message, "installation log not found" and cannot remove it. I have sent numerous emails to Greasy Palm asking how to remove rebate catcher but have never had a reply. I can live with this, as rebate catcher no longer works but recently when I try to use some links to web sites I am getting the web site http://www.greasypalm.co.uk/r/c.php?http://scripts.affiliatefuture.com/AFClick.asp?affiliateID=4926&merchantID=3291&programmeID=8841&mediaID=0&tracking=845334 in my browser's address bar which gives me, the message "please click to continue" in the middle of my screen, that is redirecting me to Amazon's web site. I am finding this hijacking of my computer extremely annoying, as I can't get the links to work. Can someone please give me very simple step by step instructions on how to get rid of it. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium OS. Cheers Jill Sheffield UK

Hi Jill, I see that you are not the only one with this issue... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic12932.html There is a discussion about the removal of Greasy Palm here, but it is quite technical... http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread22875.html# The program they are referring to is called HijackThis which analyzes your system to see what is loading when your system boots up. There are numerous message boards on the Internet where you can upload your HijackThis Log and geeks will tell you exactly what to delete from your system. Usually what these programs do is hook themselves into your system so they cannot be easily removed and when you do try to remove them, they have a program waiting to run when you reboot, which re-installs the software. Pretty tricky, so you do have to remove the software via Add/Remove Programs, but you also have to remove the "re-installer" so to speak. On the DaniWeb Post above, the solution provider refers to a location in the Registry where items have to be removed and a program location in the C:\Windows folder. This is not for the faint of heart, though. I would seek some help from a computer savvy person and back up your registry before attempting this. Regards, Kevin.
