    3. Thats why I use a flexible extension from the USB socket, the end of which sits within reach on my desk Its much easier to hold the lead end and the thumb drive and pull evenly apart Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Not to change the subject, but, I see so many people "Wiggling" the thumb drive to pull it out. This has a very good chance of damaging the thumb drive or the socket. If it is on a laptop, it has been known to crack the motherboard, since the sockets are mounted on it. 2. Diana Gale Matthiesen
    3. If you buy replacement cords for your specific device (same manufacturer, same model, etc.), there's no reason you can't have a duplicate set to travel with the device. However, most cords *are* generic, simply because it costs the device manufacturer less to use a standard cable than a custom made one. If you call tech support for the device, they should be able to tell you what cords are acceptable, or at least hand you off to their sales department, so you can purchase the correct ones directly from them. 3. Hi Kevin, Thanks for the suggestion. I was actually trying to get a delete program, as I am doubtful that a recovery program will work. I had two other files on the drive which were also corrupted which I managed to open....the data in each was totally corrupted but I managed to delete them using Unlocker. With the large file I am now trying to remove I had intended replacing the file [folder actually] with the latest version, so I dont need the contents, I just want it off my flash drive so I can save the latest version on there. 3. Good article, Kevin. Thank you for the link. I would have one bone to pick with it, however, where it says database applications are "notorious" for frequent disk writes. Yes, database software does write every change to disk the moment you hit Enter, but that's the way it's supposed to work. You change the database, it saves the change. I wouldn't consider that behavior "notorious." But as the writer states, it's a very good reason (and I can think of others) to not make a thumbdrive the primary storage medium for a database. 3. I can't think of a good reason to use a thumbdrive for primary or permanent storage of *anything*. IMHO, they should be used for short term temporary storage only. --- On Tue, 9/1/09, Diana Gale Matthiesen <Diana@danishdemes.org> wrote: > From: Diana Gale Matthiesen <Diana@danishdemes.org> > Subject: Re: [COMPUTERS] Corrupt Folder on flash drive wont delete? > To: computers@rootsweb.com > Date: Tuesday, September 1, 2009, 11:26 AM > Good article, Kevin.  Thank you > for the link. > > I would have one bone to pick with it, however, where it > says database > applications are "notorious" for frequent disk > writes.  Yes, database software > does write every change to disk the moment you hit Enter, > but that's the way > it's supposed to work.  You change the database, it > saves the change.  I > wouldn't consider that behavior "notorious."  But as > the writer states, it's a > very good reason (and I can think of others) to not make a > thumbdrive the > primary storage medium for a database. > > Diana > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: computers-bounces@rootsweb.com > On Behalf Of Kevin Ross > > Sent: Tuesday, September 01, 2009 8:57 AM > > To: computers@rootsweb.com > > Subject: Re: [COMPUTERS] Corrupt Folder on flash drive > wont delete? > > > > Can a USB thumbdrive "wear out"? > > http://ask-leo.com/can_a_usb_thumbdrive_wear_out.html > > > > > > Regards, > > Kevin.

    3. Hi Judith, It might be worth a try, as it is a free program and comes recommended... At any rate, I just wanted to note that there is a huge issue with Flash/USB Drives in that they actually have a limited life span with regards to the number of writes you can perform on them.  Because of this it is advisable to use these media only for backups and not for the primary source of your database.  Programs which store much data in a database (such as genealogy programs), make frequent writes to the database. This will reduce the lifespan of your Flash/USB Drive significantly.  I just wanted to mention this in case you were doing this ! Can a USB thumbdrive "wear out"? http://ask-leo.com/can_a_usb_thumbdrive_wear_out.html Regards, Kevin. 3. If you still have the XP machine, restore the FTM data file(s) to the XP machine. Then using a USB Drive copy the file(s) to it and then copy from it to the Vista machine. You should be able to use Windows Explorer on the XP machine to copy the file to the USB drive, then move the USB drive to the Vista machine and then copy them using again Windows Explorer. 3. When I started my research in 2001, I went with MSN dailup, and then in 2004 I changed to AT&T DSL, but because I had so many postings with my MSN address, I continue to use MSN email, but AT&T is my ISP, & I have a bill from both. You might check with EarthLink & see if that have some way you can keep your address, for a reduced fee. My MSN bill is about 1/2 of what it was when they were my ISP.
