    2. Thanks to both Bud and Bob for the advice and information. I will try Bob's program (since that is the easiest). Then if that doesn't work, I will undertake Bud's suggestion. BTW, is there also a program for print out an HTML file? Thanks, again.

    3. Hi folks, I'd like to upload digital photos to a site where my far flung friends and rellies can look at them. My ISP has a package called Snapfish, which is apparently free to use, but it seems to be more about selling prints and gimickry rather than managing the photos - although you can create folders and put captions to them and it's easy to use. I'd like to be able to put substantial notes about the photos and have the opportunity for the friends and rellies to add comments. Any suggestions? Robyn

There are programs, including free ones, that will do it for you. But if you want to do it manually, open a command prompt window, go to the directory you have the files in, and type in dir>"filename.txt", where "filename" is what you want to call the list (without the ""). Then, open THAT in notepad or wordpad, and print it.

    3. They have recently offered a "lite" Facebook which is not as busy as the original Facebook and which I think many will find appealing. It is still in beta and only some of the subscribers are using it. I am using it and may prefer it. I have closed off pretty much all public loopholes, those options are available to the user. Whether people use them or not is another matter. One does not have to accept "friends" if one is not interested in sharing. One's pages need not be open to all. I think it's worth looking at. I think there are fewer warnings as time goes on and as Facebook attempts to react to complaints and suggestions. Elaine For centuries, theologians have been explaining the unknowable in terms of the-not-worth-knowing. --Mencken Hello Nivard On Saturday, September 12, 2009, you wrote > Hi Elaine > There are repeated warnings about facebook and > its security issues not to > mention the terms and conditions of use > Personally I would be very wary about using it > but thats not to say it does > not have its uses > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >> You might want to take a look at Facebook where >> you also can exchange comments along with the >> photos. 2. This is probably the restore partition. I would not touch it. Instead of sending the program "source" CDs with the computer they now have a small 8 to 10 gigabyte part of the hard drive set aside with them. Did you run the recovery manager to create your backup CDs when you got the machine? This is possible - but an up-to-date Norton should have caught most things. When was the last time Norton's did a full system scan? It just may be that your internet cache has filled up. I know nowt about Firefox, but I find IE8 slows a mite as the cache fills. Have you tried a "disk cleanup" (right click on the disk in Windows explorer, select properties)? This clears out the temporary files as well though they are probably not the cause. > I am defragging again Never does any harm. I have Vista automatically defrag my disks every week. > I may try a system restore in safe mode on the advice of Diana. Good advice. > Can someone remind me which F key I press please? I think it depends on the make and model of your PC. As the PC boots - there should be a short period of time when you are given the options. On my PC you press F8. Chris

    3. Peter, Could you please refresh my memory. You are using Vista. What size hard drive do you have and how much free space is there on it? What size memory does the computer have? Defragmenting the hard-drive is a great first step. Another thing to be aware of is your "anti-nasty" software (anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc). Some look at the web-sites as you open them to check for "nasties" and this slows them down. Another source of slowness is the site you are opening. I find Ancestry very slow. This could be because it is very popular and their pipe is clogging up. It could be that there is too much on the page and it takes ages to download (the new pages are much bigger than the old ones). Other sites I find very fast - for example some Family History Society web-sites. These are usually much smaller than the "biggies". I also find FreeBMD and Family Search to be fast to load. I have just done a system restore back to August and after completion I got the message System Restore did not install correctly" so I undid the restore back to the present and got the same message. I am considering a complete reboot of the whole system with my Visa disc. Do I simply load the disc and it deletes the original or does that stay on the hard drive? Or do I format the drive first? I have no idea what the problem could be as I have done a complete scan more than once and found no problems. I'm getting a little stressed now so hope you can help.
