    3. These "Restore" disks are NOT made from the files on the C drive, but from a restore partition, which on some machines is the "D" drive and most others a hidden partition. What is the make and model of this machine, as each has a different way in accessing the burning method? I loaned the laptop to a granddaughter for several months. When the laptop was returned, the disks were not with it. I have wiped most of her old files, and have been told I can make a new set of disks. My questions is, what is actually copied onto a restore disk? Just the main factory installed start up items, or will it include the programs that also came with it, for which there were no hard copies? 3. One other thing, a live database should never be left open unattended. It is all right for a few minutes, but if one is going to be gone for than 15 minutes I would close the database, but one could leave the program running. With all of the things that are run by the system including Updates, sleep, hibernation and etc, things can and will clobber a dataset. The updates may even require a restart, which we all know restarting with a database open is not good for them. When sleep or hibernation kicks in, sometimes it may take up to 20 minutes for the system to be back in full running condition. When sleep or hibernation happens, ALL open files and processes MUST be copied to the respective folders of the two. When waken, then these same files MUST be copied back to RAM and the processes restarted. With large FTM databases, this can take some time in getting it all copied back. When leaving my system(s) unattended, I do not have any OPEN files, I will save them and close the file. I do not keep my Outlook 2007 running. I have been known to leave IE and FTM (without a open file) running. I also do NOT use sleep or hibernation as I have better use of my time, in lieu of waiting for it to wake up. We also leave most of our machines on 7/24. We turned them off when not in use for 30 days and compared our power bill for the previous 30 days, and there was on $5.00 difference in the bill. In my book, no big deal. 3. Hi Pam You may have already pulled the plug but if not the problem sounds like an open edit window Is the computer responding at all? ie does the number lock work or it the keyboard locked? If locked ignore my suggestion, otherwise try going to the desktop, is there an open edit window there or a download waiting an OK to be clicked I get the same problem if I leave an edit window open in say PAF or in mid save and search for something else, get distracted and wonder why PAF or whatever does not react for me, the edit / save window is sometimes underneath another Just a thought Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi List > > Don't know what's happened but I'm about 3/4 of the way through my piece > of > the 1861 census, went to the shops came back and it won't let me do > anything, every time I click on anything to continue all I get is a > "ping" > from my computer it won't even let me close it!!! frustrated any ideas > please?????!!!! > > Pam

    1. [COMPUTERS] Problems with Windows Mail as default
    2. Lee Haley
    3. Hi, I have been struggling to sort this out myself without any success. I loaded Microsoft Outlook because it seems to be the only way I found to load required MAP.dll files for emailing from MYOB accounting program as I have Windows Vista which uses Windows Mail. (Nothing to do with genealogy this time :-) I had success after installing Outlook even though it is a pain for the email to go through that instead of Windows Mail. Now ... every time I try to email a photo, document, link etc from the file it goes to Outlook by default. I don't want to have to open Windows Mail and browse for the document to attach each time, and even though I have Windows Mail set as default and Outlook is not, it's still doing it. I'm tearing my hair out and am about to uninstall Outlook unless I can find an answer to this problem. Can anyone help? Lee
