I hadn't used Firefox and Ancestry.com for a few days until today. When I go to their website it look nothing like it used to. As a matter of fact, I never did find out how to use it so I had to use IE which worked ok. Anyone else had any problem using Firefox V-3 and Ancestry.com. Thanks, Joe
Hi, I have an HP pavilion dv 9700 laptop, Windows Vista Sp2. As of a couple weeks ago, I'm having nothing but problems. It began with sound coming and going. Sometimes the volume icon has a red x and I get the message "no audio output device is installed" and device mgr. shows no device for sound. At other times I get sound and the device is showing in device mgr. This seems to be a common problem, as I've tried all the solutions I've found on the internet, including updating the driver, restore point rollback, etc. Now I'm also having programs that don't respond, etc and have had to do several hard resets lately. AVG finds no viruses and I do my maintenance programs every 2 weeks.I'm about ready to reformat the hard drive, but would love to hear any other ideas before I do this. And if I do this will it fix my problems? Any suggestions? Thanks Patricia Owens
You can use Irfanview and add text and print from there without having to use Word. I use Word because I like to type something underneath the photo. I save them in Jpg. Thanks Peter > Why are you using Word to do this printing. Actually this may be a Word issue. I bought a new all-in-one today and scanned a couple of old b/w photos to try it out which seemed to work quite well then inserted them one at a time onto an A4 Word sheet and enlarged the photo to fill the whole page but they only printed 19cm x 13cm which is smaller than the originals. All the settings are ok so I don't know what to do. My old printer did the same thing which means it's probably not the printers. I'm using Office 2007 and Vista. Any ideas please? Peter
On my last website upload I had problems. First attempt -- used FireFTP which said I have memory issue. It failed to upload some files accurately although I used it in August to upload, with no problem. Second attempt -- used WS_FTP which said I have memory issue. Third attempt -- used FireZilla FTP Client which said I have timeout problem. I suspect this is accurate -- the timeout problem. The website upload contains 4.04 MB with 729 files. The difference seems to be that I am using my HP XP Home notebook computer to upload instead of the Sony XP Home desktop computer. (The Sony is not available) FireZilla FTP Client is new program for me. I noticed some files displayed different sizes (computer side versus EarthLink side) -- is this normal? Is there a way I can increase timeout in XP Home? How and where would I change the timeout setting? Rae Jean
Why are you using Word to do this printing. What not just print the photos using the Photo printing capabilities of Windows? Just right the files within Windows Explorer, and select Print. These files get converted to a Word base image and are not as good as the original. What type of image file did you saves these as? David, Thanks for your reply, when I purchased the new hard drive a lot of of programmes I had were transferred over by the the computer sales people, but some were left behind, I will have someone with more knowledge than me have a look at it, thought I would pick the lists brains first, as they have been so helpful previously. Is there any way to change my IE Home Page to not have a Home Page at all. I use different browsers for different things and when I click on Google I don't want to go to IE I want to go to Google, same with Firefox etc. I don't find the things I am looking for since IE made itself my home page. I am using 64bit Windows 7 (for only a week) laptop and getting pretty confused :) Bobbie
Browsers (IE and FireFox) are NOT home pages but each can have one. What is happening, that IE is set as the default browser and whenever you click a "URL" web address, that URL will be opened using that default browser. What is this "Google" that you are clicking one? You can set the home page to be what you want in IE 9, Open IE, go to Google.com by clicking on the "Home" (looks like a house) icon, and then select "Add or change Home page", then select one of the options. If you do not want Google, the you can go to any other site and do the same thing. What do you use these different browser for that you cannot use just one? Hi Phil, Most modern browsers are memory hogs, these days. A lot of it has to do with the Page Tabs. The more you open, the more memory you use ! I have 2Gb of on-board memory and still have issues, so I use a Memory Manager called CleanMem, which sits in my Tray. I double click on many times during the day and it releases unused memory. Margaret, By putting the old drive in the new machine, does not allow the programs installed on it work under Windows 7. The programs MUST be reinstalled so they (the programs) will know where the Windows "Protocol's" are at. There are no issues about running 32 bit programs on a 64 bit machine. That said, yes, some of the older 32 bit programs MUST be updated to a newer 32 bit version to run under Windows 7 period. However NONE of the 16 bit programs can even be installed on a 64 bit machine. As for the Error message that the E drive is getting full, because you are resaving some files to it. What I would do, reinstall those programs that you need and can, that were on your old machine. You will need the CD's or the install files that were downloaded to do this. I would also move the "User" files, such as My Documents and My Pictures to your account on the C drive (Windows 7) and any other "Data" to the C drive. Then I would delete old Operation System and program files and folders from the E drive. If you do not understand this, get someone that will work with you in moving and deleing things. As for anyone that would just put a old system drive in a new machine and NOT clean it up, needs to be put out of our misery. Hope this helps. I did not find anything else useful to help me get rid of Babylon. In the end I searched for all instances of Babylon on my computer and deleted them, then emptied the recycle bin. I then downloaded the latest versions of all my browsers and rebooted my computer. I then reset the homepage of each browser to the default setting. So far so good and everything seems to be back to normal. Thank goodness it was driving me crazy! Thanks again for your advice. Jean.
