I expected to find it only when I clicked on "view image" but no option was given for it--but I also didn't get the prompt to download the enhanced image viewer. I always felt like that prompt was a slap in the face, because I couldn't make it install. Hi Myra They are all the same Search and select any image When its downloaded just above the image you should find "Options" Click that and it should give the option Enhanced Viewer Beta , select it and away you go Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) One question, I tried to find this, but have found nothing. I have ancestry.com. It that the area you're talking about or is this for some other area of the world? Like ancestry.ca? MYRA HERRON
Thanks, Nivard. Good news, that it works without downloading or installing! Hi Kevin There appears to be no need to download it or at least I did not get that option and it still works after a reboot It works very well, download is much quicker and uses no scroll bar but the scroll on the mouse works perfectly and very quickly Clarity is excellent I have just remembered that I knew I was on the old viewer as the save to computer does not work in that but you get a prompt to right click and save image as Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Is the new Ancestry Viewer something that needs to be "installed" on > your system or is it completely on line? > > I can't check right now as I am not at my computer! > > Glad to hear that they have made the enhancements and look forward to > trying it out and hearing the feedback! > > > Regards, > Kevin.
Hi Lila Well I have had no problem using the new Beta viewer As previously mentioned I had problems downloading images for a few days, on a couple of occasions a page flashed for a split second which I recognised as the "use our enhanced viewer" page (which popped up when using the standard viewer), assuming the enhanced viewer had become corrupted for some reason I checked Options and found the Enhanced Viewer Beta I did not download it, it appears to work without And yes it is completely new Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > Every time there was a little change in my system, the old image viewer stopped functioning and > they told me to download it, but when there was any fragment of it left it wouldn't install. Every time there was a little change in my system, the old image viewer stopped functioning and they told me to download it, but when there was any fragment of it left it wouldn't install. There were complicated instructions for removing those last fragments. Complicated is the keyword here. Will I have to do jump through all those hoops to install the new image viewer, or is it completely new? I am not going to put mine to sleep while it still works but I am removing all of my important work from it to my newer computer. Should have done that long ago. I paid $1,532.00 for the 486 computer and $279.95 for my Panasonic KX-P2123 Printer. Much more than we have to pay today for a good computer and a good printer. Every part of the inside of the computer is still as tight and in good shape as when it was new and it has done a lot of work over the years. Janet In a message dated 11/13/2011 2:37:02 P.M. Hi Joe Its already available I have been using it Like you found, for a couple of days its been playing up, not loading immediately, needed several refreshes on occasion Bring up any image in Ancestry, look for "Options" Then select Use the Advanced Viewer Beta It seems to work quite well Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard. Hi Nivard, No problem. I understand. Just happy to have this antique working again. My Panasonic printer still works perfectly. I am on my 3rd internet computer and 4th printer since my 486. Hi all and Joe in particular <g> I found that Ancestry have released a new enhanced viewer , blurb from them as follows (better instructions with diagrams on site) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Welcome to the New Advanced Image Viewer from Ancestry! Our image viewer is one of the most important parts of the Ancestry.co.uk service - our goal is for it to bring to life the wonderful historical documents we have in our collections. We also wanted to have an image viewer that brings full functionality to users with the vast majority of operating systems and browsers. We've been aware over the past months that launches of recent versions of browsers have caused problems for some users, especially if you are a Firefox user. We've been working to bring you a completely new viewer that solves these problems and which allows more of you to use the Advanced Image Viewer. In addition, we've been updating the technology we use to retrieve the images to make the experience faster and to give you more control over the image. Of course, with any update, there are also changes in the way some things work. We made great effort to keep the experience as similar to the previous Advanced Image Viewer as possible, but there are some differences. We outline some of these below, and we'd love to get your feedback. Over the coming weeks, while we roll out the new viewer, the old viewer will continue to be available through the options menu on the toolbar. We will discontinue the old viewer once we are confident we have identified and resolved any problems. What's New There are several new features and capabilities in the New Advanced Image Viewer: Rotate and Mirror. Two new features are available on the toolbar. Rotate an image 90 degrees at a time or mirror it (flip it over) can make reading some images easier. Try these out. (To get the image back the way it used to be, just click on "Rotate" or "Mirror" again until it looks right.) Zoom drop down. We have updated the options in the zoom drop down: Fit Image, Fit Width, Fit Height, and Full Size give you broad control over the initial size of the image. There are now many more levels of zoom so they didn't fit as well in the drop down list. Use the Zoom In / Zoom Out or mouse controls to get the image to the right size. Zoom controls. The Zoom in/Zoom out buttons remain to help you zoom in or out on an image. We have also added support for zooming in and out using the scroll wheel on your mouse or using the plus (+) and minus (-) keys on your numeric keypad. Image Panning. Use the mouse to click and drag an image around on the screen. Alternately, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the image. Please note that there are no scroll bars within the viewer. Support for more browsers. The Advanced Image Viewer can run on more browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. Support for more operating systems. The Advanced Image Viewer can run on more operating systems, including Windows and Macintosh. Uses Adobe Flash Player. Some of the changes and additional platform support are enabled by the use of Adobe Flash. If your system doesn't support the Adobe Flash Player 10.0 or later, you will need to use the Standard Viewer. What's Changed Scroll bars. You may notice the scroll bars are gone from the image area. Moving an image is now done with the keyboard (using the arrow keys) or by clicking and dragging the image with the mouse. To do this, just click on the image and, while holding the mouse button down, move the image to another place on the screen. Zooming with the mouse. Use your mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out on the image. You can also use the zoom buttons or the keypad plus (+) and minus (-) keys. Thumbnail view. From the Options menu, you can turn on the Thumbnail. This is similar to the "old" thumbnail, but is enhanced. Clicking and dragging in the thumbnail moves the image on the screen. If you have flipped or mirrored the image, those changes are reflected in the thumbnail. Faster Performance. The new viewer, and the new backend services that provide the images, are designed to be faster. This should help users who have slower internet connections. Image format. We are now "tiling" the images, which allows us to deliver just the pieces of the image at the right resolution that you need to view on the screen. As you zoom in or move an image on the screen, you may see parts of the image start out blurry and then become clear. This is caused by the next set of tiles loading. Overall, the images should load faster. Try it out; we think it works fairly well. Printing. The "old" viewer used a custom Print dialog. The new viewer opens the image in a new window and uses the standard Print dialog. Saving an image to disk. The "old" viewer used a Save dialog invoked from an ActiveX control, which caused security issues on some Windows computers, making the image difficult tosave (or it would sometimes save in a non-desired location). The new viewer uses a standard Save dialog that should avoid these problems. We want to hear from you! Please continue and take a short survey on the new image viewer. We appreciate your feedback!
Hi to all of you who replied to my original answer. Thought you might like to know. My old 486 computer is up and running good as ever although I don't really need three computers. My computer Tech can't believe it is still running so well. My panasonic printer has never had a problem and is still running great too. I have had to replace my new printer twice and this is my third computer. Don't make anything like they used to. :-) Janet In a message dated 11/3/2011 2:25:42 P.M. Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Hi Nivard, My question is: After using this computer since 1993, I can't open the computer. I receive a message telling me that "FLOPPY DRIVES: FAILED." I pressed F1 for more information, it gives me this message: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I did that to install the 2 disks. In the middle of disk 1, they asked to install another disk, which I had made, I did that and they installed Disk 1 some more and asked for another disk, which I also had made, they installed some more and then it stopped installing. So next I pressed CTRL-ALT-ESC to enter setup - which took me to a page with my computer information on it - under the section labeled "Boot Sequence: A, C, the name 'Virus Warning was flashing and it was marked ENABLED. Then I see that I only have A: drive, that my B: C: and D: are all gone. Now I need to restore B: C: and D: drives but can't get thru the System Disks to restore the computer. I use D: all the time and keep all of my work in it. I need it back as well as the other drives as B: to save work and of course C: are necessary. I purposely use this compute because it is not on the internet and after 2 crashes from the internet decided this was more reliable than my internet computers. I have known for sometime that I needed to get my work finished and save to a CD but foolishly I just kept using it. Hope you have not all fallen asleep by now from reading all of this but just wanted to give you as much information as possible in the hopes that someone or all of you might have an answer for me. I have 30 years of work in this computer and I am not usually a dodo head. :-) Thanks for listening, Janet In a message dated 11/3/2011 9:58:45 A.M. Is the new Ancestry Viewer something that needs to be "installed" on your system or is it completely on line? I can't check right now as I am not at my computer! Glad to hear that they have made the enhancements and look forward to trying it out and hearing the feedback! Regards, Kevin. Lila, I use IE V6 and Firefox. I prefer Firefox. I did just as Nivard said. I brought it where the image would normally start and went to options and clicked to use the new Beta Viewer. This was on Firefox. On IE I really hadn't got the new viewer to work. I just use the old basic one. This is better than yesterday as I couldn't download anything using either Explorer. I am sure that Nivard could explain all of this better that me. It worked. And I love it. I always have preferred grab and move stuff. And the image does seem to be easier to read, but that's probably just my imagination. Thanks for your ongoing help in all this stuff!!! MYRA HERRON

Hi Bud, Many thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it is Admin that they've disappeared from :( Best wishes, Maureen Ps. Apologies if I've replied to you twice. My first reply hasn't appeared yet and I'd prefer to thank you twice then not at all. > If you are using a 'user' account and NOT an Administrator account, > you can only see folders for the user account you're in. > > You need to be in an Admin account to see all folders, and then you can > move > the files in those folders to places where they can be used.
Hi Bud, Thank you for taking the trouble to reply. Unfortunately it's the Administrator account they've disappeared from. So frustrating. Best wishes, Maureen > If you are using a 'user' account and NOT an Administrator account, > you can only see folders for the user account you're in. > > You need to be in an Admin account to see all folders, and then you can move > the files in those folders to places where they can be used.
