I'm using version 7.0.1 with a few add-ons I think but can't remember what they are. I use CCleaner often and on my HDD I have 207 GB free of 465 GB. Perhaps I should install another 500 GB. I will download Process Explorer and see what that reveals. Thanks again Bud I will give a try If it doesn't solve the problem I can always go back to the previous router settings Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > It's under the control of the ISP, and it can go back slowly so that it's > not noticed right away, OR in same cases the ISP just doesn't care. > > It's something that many users don't understand, so they don't complain > as much and often blame the problem on their own computer. > > It's only one possibility, but it's an easy one to check and fix. > > Other problems could be involved too, or by themselves.

Peter Let me guess - you're using AVG 2012 as your anti-virus software, and you keep getting a pop-up in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen saying how much memory your browser is using ? Does it also suggest that restarting the browser might help ? I'm not quite sure why the latest version of AVG does that, or how it is intended that it will help you, but it's a feature of their "PC Analyzer" ! Looks good to me, Peter. If you Right-Click on CleanMem and select "Clean Memory Now" you will release all memory that has been reserved but not used. Regards, Kevin. Hi Bobbie, The CPU is the Central Processing Unit in your computer. It is an electronic part that is the "brains" of your computer. In PCs, this part is manufactured by either Intel or AMD. Though it is not necessary that you know about this, if you want to read more, try this... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_processing_unit Regards, Kevin. Thanks for that Bud I will investigate further We have used the same ISP for a few years and not had this problem until a couple of weeks back Is it something that could start happening out of the blue or could something have triggered it? Just wondering why its been fine until two weeks ago? Who controls DNS , the ISP ? Reading a little it suggests the router is set normally to use the ISPs DNS by default , am I reading that correctly? Which suggests to me that Sky have changed it Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >> Symptoms are trying to open a Firefox browser window (google home page) >> and get the report server not found > > That is often a DNS problem. > > Everything on the Net works by numbers (dotted quad, or the newer IPv6). > > A DNS server translates names (www.something) into the correct IP address > (number). > > If the DNS server for your ISP is flaky, and many are, you'll see what > you're getting. > > The best fix is to 'hard code' a better DNS service into Windows. > That can be done in your computer, or better yet, in your router/modem. > > Do a web search for "public DNS servers", and you'll find many choices. > Try a few til you get one you like that works well. > > Most sites will explain how to set the server in your router or computer.
Hi all For the past couple of weeks I/we are having intermittent connection problems and wondered if anyone can advise further ways to find the problem Using Netgear router, Sky broadband , village location, semi rural (2 miles from a town) Win XP SP3 & Firefox 3.6.24 or IE 8 It seems to happen more in the morning but randomly during the day it occurs at all sorts of times There are five wireless users at max, two most of the day and the others later if used at all Wireless icon shows good connection = 54mbps Signal Strength = Excellent I have used an internet speed checker today which reports my ISP (Sky) is the best in the area (max is supposed to be 20mb) Download speed 7.7mb / local average = 10.5 (which includes mostly those in the town) Upload speed .4mb / local average = .6mb Same check 7 days ago Download speed 7.mb / local average = 10.6 (which includes mostly those in the town) Upload speed .6mb / local average = .6mb A second speed checker today gave Download Speed 6488kbps Upload Speed 463 kbps 2nd test Download Speed 7544kbps Upload Speed 533 kbps ============= Symptoms are trying to open a Firefox browser window (google home page) and get the report server not found Trying Internet Explorer I get the same problem, repeated "try again" in both browsers eventually gets a connection With either browser open and trying to connect to a variety of sites gets the same error message My wife using a new laptop also gets the same so its not my PC ============= Just this minute tried to open a window in both FF & IE and got the error FF reports = Firefox can't find the server at en-gb.start2.mozilla.com. And from another open window = Firefox can't find the server at www.google.com. Can anyone suggest any ways to diagnose the problem please as its driving me round the twist Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

Looks okay... Please try to write down exactly what the Firefox low memory message says... I am interested to know. In order to see if it is your system that is low on memory, I would recommend installing that CleanMem Free program I mentioned... it tells you the memory situation immediately, in real time ! Ok, I'll buy more RAM and see what happens. Malwarebytes is scanning right now but not found anything yet. Peter > > Do you mean an extra 1 or 2 gigs of RAM? > > Yes. The exact same thing has happened to me with Firefox--never happened before and now at least once or twice each day the message comes up in lower right hand corner----I close the screen I am on and then reload it and all is fine--I am glad to hear it is not just my computer. Helen
Do you mean an extra 1 or 2 gigs of RAM? I defragged about two weeks ago. I shall try malwarebytes right now. Thanks Peter > > 1 or 2 gigs of ram might help. My nephew has had his own pc here for a few months now but the problem only started a couple of weeks ago. Peter
Hi Peter, Just wondering what version of Firefox you are using? - Newer versions seem to manage memory much better. Are you using CCleaner to get rid of all of the Firefox temporary files? - I find that this allows Firefox to run better with less memory issues, although it still uses a lot of memory Do you have a lot of Firefox Add-ons installed? - every Add-on takes up additional memory - you should only Enable Add-ons that you will use I have 2Gb of memory in my system and run many programs at the same time (i.e. Word, Excel, Firefox Outlook, Snag-It...), and have lots of Firefox Add-Ons that I use. Even so, I rarely hit 1Gb of usage. I do use a small freeware program called CleanMem Free (http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem) which allows me to monitor memory usage. A little pop-up box is always visible in the lower right of my screen to show me the memory status. A simple right-click on this pop-up allows me to free up any memory that has been inadvertently reserved... works very well... I also monitor memory and CPU usage with the Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC). I have actually replaced the standard Task Manager with the SysInternals program called Process Explorer (a free Microsoft product). It gives a wealth of information. The only other issue I can think of right now is to insure that your HD is not too filled up... Any operating system will suffer from lack of space on the HD. Regards, Kevin. Peter, NO, I would NOT use any Overclocked machine. The extra voltage is just like add more voltage to a light bulb. It will burn brighter, but not for as long as it should. If one was to spend more on a more powerful machine to start with, then the overclocking is not needed and will not burn itself up. The act of buying a cheap machine and then adding more voltage to make it run faster, is not what the cheaper machine were designed to do. Get a machine with a FAST CPU to start with, and that can run with lots of RAM. Nivard, I think your first recourse is to complain to Sky. If what Bud says has happened, something or somebody at Sky has corrupted their DNS program and they may not even know about it. bob gillis On 11/16/2011 8:02 AM, Nivard Ovington wrote: > Thanks for that Bud > > I will investigate further > > We have used the same ISP for a few years and not had this problem until a couple of weeks back > > Is it something that could start happening out of the blue or could something have triggered it? > > Just wondering why its been fine until two weeks ago? > > Who controls DNS , the ISP ? > > Reading a little it suggests the router is set normally to use the ISPs DNS by default , am I > reading that correctly? > > Which suggests to me that Sky have changed it > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > > > >>> Symptoms are trying to open a Firefox browser window (google home page) >>> and get the report server not found >> >> That is often a DNS problem. >> >> Everything on the Net works by numbers (dotted quad, or the newer IPv6). >> >> A DNS server translates names (www.something) into the correct IP address >> (number). >> >> If the DNS server for your ISP is flaky, and many are, you'll see what >> you're getting. > > > > > :-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~: > > Please refrain from posting commercial URLs and from discussing prices on the list. > > Remember to SNIP when replying. > > :-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~:-~: > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >
