Lloyd ... thanks much for the tip re the master PW. George Elting mentioned that also, as I recall. Evidently that's a good approach. I don't know how Google will ever listen as there does not appear to be a way to get in contact with them If they ever do solve the problem I might return Re cookies and instant , I tried with saving google cookies and without - - no difference It stubbornly refuses to switch off If ever there was a good reason to sack someone this is it but my suspicion is they will give him/her a pat on the back and a bonus That is my experience of such companies Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard, > > I would suggest that Google will listen, as I see lots of talk about > it. Hi Kevin To be clear, there are two things here Instant is Google making suggestions that *they* think I want And autocomplete which looks at *your* previous searches and suggests as you type Its the latter I require and *not* instant No matter what you do Instant remains on If its not instant what is it? Using Bing in preferences there is a toggle box for Suggestions on or off , tick the *no* box and it switches it off and remains off Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard, > > Have you tried Bing ? > > It features AutoComplete, as well. > > Regards, > Kevin.
Hi Kevin Don't worry unless its of interest to you I think I will just resort to Bing I have just reset my home page to Bing and set preferences to *no* suggested searches Bliss Why don't people like google ever listen ? Its like walking into a pub and asking for a pint of bitter and the barman says, oh no you can have lager, we know you don't like it but thats all you can have So you go elsewhere Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > This doesn't seem to work. Thanks Lynne But sadly nothing works, followed links, signed in and signed out I do not have web history turned on and haven't for years, why this has suddenly started is beyond me unless its to do with the firefox upgrade? Either way I am sick of it Thanks for the help - Bing here I come Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard > > > From http://www.google.com/instant/ - > > Frequently Asked Questions > Q: Can I turn off Google Instant? > > A: If you don't want to see results as you type, you can turn off Google Instant by visiting your > Preferences page. > > Q: Where is Google Instant available?
Hi Kevin All I can say is that up to a week or so ago, if I typed a search into google it came up with *my* previous search words Since about a week ago as soon as I enter a letter it gives a list of ten hits *google* thinks I might be looking for Thanks for looking for me, would be interested in result Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard, > > This is not Google Instant, but is the Google AutoComplete feature > that you are talking about. > > Apparently, there is no EASY way to turn this off, but there are some > "Techie" ways to do this. > > There are several fixes for this on YouTube... > > This one involves editing the HOSTS file in Windows and adding Google > links to suppress the AutoComplete feature. > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG05MtICCqE > > I will test this out myself > > > Regards, > Kevin.
Hi Bud Crikey that takes me back, I was using dogpile ten years ago I am surprised its still going Now I just tried a quick test on dogpile and unfortunately it also has predictive search :-( Checking the preferences it does not appear to have an option to turn it off But thanks for the prompt Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > SIMPLE solution. > > DON'T use Google. > > Try www.dogpile.com
Hi and thanks for your input But no its not history thats the problem, its google wanting to foist *their* search suggestions on to me It predicts from the letters you type what you are looking for and suggests the first ten ranked suggestions It drives me round the bend as it does many others if googling the problem is anything to go by So far I am no further forward About the only thing I can think of to try is go back to Firefox 3 but don't really want to go backwards Thank you though Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Could it be that you need to "delete history"? > Don't know if that would solve your problem, but it may.
Hi Kevin My poor explanation I am afraid :-( Opening Ccleaner on the first "Cleaner" page there are two panes, one for Windows, the other for Applications , it was on the Applications tab that Cookies was unchecked Having just spent a few minutes studying the various options it appears that somewhere along the line clearing cookies for Firefox has inexplicably been turned off So having righted that and cleared the cookies which I thought had cleared each day........and No change :-( Still can't get google instant to turn off Coming to the point when Bing is looking very tempting Why do companies think that by making it difficult to change settings everyone will just put up with it I have tried contacting google, frankly I found it nigh on impossible, rather like ebay in fact Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard, > > Not sure what you mean by this statement... > (ie cookies still show in the Cookies section in the left pane) > > The "cookies" box will always remain ticked on until you choose to > tick it off (i.e. not delete any cookies) > > When you click on the "Analyze" button, before actually doing a > Cleaning, do you get results that show you will be deleting cookies? > > As well, in CCleaner if you click on the Options selection (Left > Side), then click on the Advanced button, you will have an option that > should be ticked ON... Hi Nivard, Fair enough! Personally, I don't have a problem with the Google Search. I just type what I am looking for and search. The recommendations they give me are, more often than not, quite helpful. Most of my searches are, to be honest, ones that I would not have searched for before, so I don't have an issue with their looking at my previous searches or not. Now if you can solve my problems with Honda Canada... blah, blah, blah (another mega company that will not listen to the individual !!!) Thanks for the discussion ! Regards, Kevin. Hi Nivard, I would suggest that Google will listen, as I see lots of talk about it. I think they have to work out a bug in their system... AutoComplete, Instant, Web History, Cookies... they don't seem to function well with each other. By the way... when you delete your cookies, this also deletes the cookie which holds the info for Google Instant, thus turning it back on (the default). Regards, Kevin. Hi Nivard, This is not Google Instant, but is the Google AutoComplete feature that you are talking about. Apparently, there is no EASY way to turn this off, but there are some "Techie" ways to do this. There are several fixes for this on YouTube... This one involves editing the HOSTS file in Windows and adding Google links to suppress the AutoComplete feature. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG05MtICCqE I will test this out myself Regards, Kevin. Hi Nivard, Not sure what you mean by this statement... (ie cookies still show in the Cookies section in the left pane) The "cookies" box will always remain ticked on until you choose to tick it off (i.e. not delete any cookies) When you click on the "Analyze" button, before actually doing a Cleaning, do you get results that show you will be deleting cookies? As well, in CCleaner if you click on the Options selection (Left Side), then click on the Advanced button, you will have an option that should be ticked ON... "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours" This will leave any Windows Temporary files that are less than 24 hours old, as is. Not sure if this affects cookies, as well ?!?!? Hi all Still struggling to turn off google instant and in the process of checking a few things I find in Ccleaner that although I have cookies ticked to clear under the windows section, they do not clear (ie cookies still show in the Cookies section in the left pane) So looking further there is a cookie option which is unticked under the Applications section What happens if I tick that and run Ccleaner ? I wondered what others have that set at Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi all > > A peculiar one that I can't seem to resolve > > For the last few days I have been lumbered with googles predictive text type searches > > Where you start to type and it "predicts" what the site is you are looking for, it really drives > me > round the bend > > I have looked at settings and have google instant turned off, yet it does it anyway > > I have turned it on , saved settings, then turned it off and saved again yet no effect > > Anyone have a clue what it might be ? > > I use Firefox and XP > > Any help appreciated before I bin google and use Bing instead > > On googling this appears to be a long term problem for some, this has only just become an issue > for me in the last week > > I suspect it coincided with upgrading to the latest Firefox as Ancestry have now added a usable > enhanced viewer > > I have checked googles forums but all they seem to do is vent their anger on google but google > does not respond or fix the problem > > Any thoughts ? > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >

Could it be that you need to "delete history"?
