Christine, I'm new to this list, and I don't know if this has already been discussed, but when you update adobe, never do it from a website prompt. Always go directly to adobe. Either with your web browser or by setting automatic updates in your viewer. The update link provided by a website may not always be a real adobe update, it may be a Trojan variant noted as TROJ_FAYKDOBE.A I'm NOT saying that is what happened. I am just making you aware of the possibility. It could just be that the first update didn't complete successfully. I would tend to think the ancestry message was correct. Ancestry would not give you a lesser version. It does not come from Ancestry themselves. Their link would simply redirect you to Adobe for the latest version. I suggest you run a virus scan, and then go to Adobe and manually download the latest version. The same thing happened to me and it was so discouraging. I believe you can set it to receive only new emails. It is in your settings somewhere. spc > > > >
Hi Christine, The latest version of Adobe Flash is 11.1.102.55. There are two versions available. The one you need will depend on the browser you are using. But it doesn't hurt at all to install them both, I suggest that you do this... Flash Player 11.1.102.55 (Non-IE) http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_firefox/10991/ Flash Player 11.1.102.55 (IE) http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_ie/10987/ Download the files, close all of your browsers, then install these two programs. Then try to access Ancestry once again. Regards, Kevin. Hi All, This morning an update to Adobe(I think it was) was available and I downloaded it. Now Ancestry was first slow in loading images or didn't download them at all and now says "This page requires the Adobe Flash viewer. You may download the viewer from Adobe.com." That is the stage at which I thought "I'm sure that's what I downloaded this morning." So I'm reluctant to allow Ancestry to download what may be an old version and possibly tie it in knots! Has anyone had similar problems? Grateful for any suggestions. Christine PS I am using Windows7.
Enterprise/Firefox/ExtendedSupport:Proposal Firefox 10 will be the base version for the initial ExtendedSupport (ESR) and, assuming this is the case, Firefox 3.6 will be end-of-lifed on April 24th, 2012 (when Firefox 3.6 is end-of-lifed, an update to the current version of Desktop Firefox will be offered through the Application Update Service). https://wiki.mozilla.org/Enterprise/Firefox/ExtendedSupport:Proposal#Proposal Mozilla readies to pull support plug on Firefox 3.6 http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/mozilla-readies-to-pull-support-plug-on-firefox-36/17567 Firefox 3.6 users - What will you do when the plug is pulled on your browser? http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/firefox-36-users-what-will-you-do-when-the-plug-is-pulled-on-your-browser/17581 ======== Summary: April 24, 2012. Mark it in your calendar, Firefox 3.6 users! Mozilla has announced a date for the end of support for Firefox 3.6. April 24, 2012. Mark it in your calendar, Firefox 3.6 users! Why is this date significant? Because after this date there will be no more new releases to fix security patches. The browser will get real old (and real dangerous to use) real fast. Using Firefox 3.6 beyond the end of life date is NOT RECOMMENDED. Something else is happening on that day too … Firefox 10 will be released, and it will be Mozilla’s first Extended Support Release (ESR) release. -------- See how modern browsers stack up - The BIG browser benchmark! Chrome 16/15 vs Opera 11 vs IE9 vs Firefox 9/8 vs Safari 5 http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/the-big-browser-benchmark-chrome-1615-vs-opera-11-vs-ie9-vs-firefox-98-vs-safari-5/17367 -------- Since Firefox 4.0, Mozilla has been on an aggressive update schedule which sees a new version pushed out every six weeks. While this might be acceptable to home users, business and enterprise uses find this aggressive update cycle to be too much to handle. Back in September of last year Mozilla announced plans for a Extended Support Release cycle that would see a version of the browser supported for 42 weeks. Initially Firefox 8 or 9 was slated for ESR, but this slipped. It seems that a lot of regular users are sticking with Firefox 3.6 too, for one reason or another. Currently Firefox 3.6 is at #6 in the browser version charts. Mozilla has tried nudging Firefox 3.6 users to the latest release already. Now it’s putting the squeeze on them. While there’s no doubt that the latest releases offer far better JavaScript performance than 3.6, it’s not been enough to convince the stalwarts that upgrading is worthwhile. -------- Graphic: Top 12 Browser Versions (January 2012) http://i.zdnet.com/blogs/05-01-2012-16-12-34.png -------- ESR support for Firefox 10 will mean that Mozilla will backport security bugs qualified as “Critical” and “High” to the ESR where feasible. However, Mozilla is at pains to point out that there may be exceptional cases where a backport cannot be applied with reasonable effort. Other security and stability backports to the ESR will be included at Mozilla’s discretion. When an ESR version reaches end-of-life, no further point releases will be offered to users, and an update to the latest supported version of the ESR (or Desktop Firefox, if the ESR for that platform is discontinued) will be offered to users of the end-of-lifed version. While this decision won’t please some, I think it’s the right decision to make. Mozilla can’t remain committed to Firefox 3.6 (and its users) indefinitely. Will an ESR version of Firefox help to appease those who file the current update schedule too aggressive, or will users migrate to different browsers?
I like the new look, The learning curve to absorb the new functionality is short. I like the ability to collapse/expand the unread/stared/other categories in the inbox. All my folders are visible in the left pane of the window, and its easy to scroll up and down the window. Sorry, I don't really see what all the fuss is about. There are settings to adjust fonts, backgrounds etc to reduce eye-strain etc. On balance, thank you Google for a nice update. > > > Message: 2 > Date: Thu, 5 Jan 2012 15:53:06 -0500 > From: Kevin Ross <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [COMPUTERS] gmails new look > > > For what it is worth, I don't see what all of the fuss is about with > the NEW look. ><== SNIP > I guess it is a personal choice, but I have to say that I like the NEW > look. > > > Regards, > Kevin. > > > ------------------------------ > > Message: 5 > Date: Thu, 5 Jan 2012 19:37:34 -0500 > From: FredandMaryFrances Powell <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [COMPUTERS] gmails new look > To: [email protected] > Message-ID: > <[email protected]om > > > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 > > Joan, I agree 100%! For what it is worth, I don't see what all of the fuss is about with the NEW look. I have taken Screen Shots of my account with the NEW look and with the OLD look and I find that there are not many major differences. I find the the NEW look is much better and modern looking, in my opinion. It may take a little while to get used to the locations of some things, but I find it much better now that I have used it for a while. The Compose button is now a button. I can clearly see my Sent Mail, Drafts, Spam, Trash buttons on the left. Contacts and Tasks (not as frequently used) are one click away under the MAIL drop-down on the upper left. The mail/Menu Bar changes based on what task you are doing. *** By the way... you CAN go back to the OLD version (until they close it down) by clicking on the Settings "wheel" on the Mail/Menu Bar on the upper right of your screen. *** Also... you can also change the Display Density by clicking on the Settings "wheel" on the Mail/Menu Bar on the upper right of your screen. I find that the "Compact" setting is more like the OLD look and works well for me. I guess it is a personal choice, but I have to say that I like the NEW look. Regards, Kevin. Thank you for the advice and thorough report on ARO 2011. I'll get rid of it. On another note, if I can change subject to G mail. If you have it, I'm having frustrations over the insistent reminder to click on the New Look on gmail which, if you can't avoid it will give you a video and it's an interruption of my intent to just get through the huge numbers of email and then go on to other things. But I wonder if I can avoid getting this and other missing things, like the task bar above titled 'back to search results', 'archive', 'Report spam', 'Delete' and 'labels' which are blank boxes now with numbers or icons you have to hover your pointer over to use. What's going on with gmail? My computer will not let me download any programs. I have tried CNet, Gizmo, FileHippo, and the program companies themselves. I cannot download Comodo, Avast, Trend, FileZilla, or anything else. You might try this -- go to another computer and download Malwarebytes to a thumb (flash) drive. Try running the new Malware bytes from the flash drive. Hi Frank, I have a Samsung Smart TV. I have had some joy in viewing stuff from an iPAd with the Access all feature offered by the TV. I have tried using Bluetooth, but this doesn't work too well. I should qualify this by saying that the TV recognised the iPad, but didn't want to Talk to it. I gave up and haven't explored further. I do note that X-boxes can be connected wirelessly, or by scart or HDMI. I mention this because the Xbox website may prove useful in guiding you on setting up a connection. Keep us up to date please.
