Hi Nivard, I'm using Win7, Thunderbird and Avast - and I haven't had any pop up window or other message about security. My mail is coming down as usual. Hi again John One further thought on this As you are using Thunderbird and are not getting the pop up, it suggests its not TB What are you using for Anti-virus ? Avast ? or another? Hi John Just to clarify it is not an email , its a pop up window worded as described before the download I am wondering if Avast or Thunderbird have made "improvements" but I don't recall there being an update to either, although Avast updates itself throughout the day often a few times a day Not sure what is causing the pop up or why Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard > No I have not received an e mail as you have described, but will look > out for it. > > Is it a Spam or a Scam? > > I wonder if its a virus? > > I will let you know if I receive the same. > > Still not many e mails, so perhaps your explanation may be right. > > Thanks for alerting everyone. > > Regards John

Regards John
Hi all Using Win7 with Thunderbird and Avast Switched on and went to open Thunderbird to download my mail this morning I got this message in a pop up window ===================== Add Security Exception You are about to override how Thunderbird identifies this site Legitimate banks, stores, and other public sites will not ask you to do this Server Location (googlemail server) (then a clickable box "Get certificate") Certificate Status This site attempts to identify itself with invalid information (then clickable box "View") Unknown identity Certificate is not trusted, because it hasn't been verified by a recognized authority using a secure signature (then a tick box) Permanently store this exception Confirm Security Exception (or) Cancel ===================== Cancel did nothing and the only way I could get past this was to "Confirm Security Exception" And therefore "Permanently store this exception" It then downloaded my overnight mail As I don't know why this has come up or what the repercussions are I wondered if any other user has had this -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

Keep you computer safe for doing genealogy (and your money too). J. Asche National Cyber Awareness System Scams Exploiting Boston Marathon Explosion Original release date: April 17, 2013 Malicious actors are exploiting the April 15 explosions at the Boston Marathon in attempts to collect money intended for charities and to spread malicious code. Fake websites and social networking accounts have been set up to take advantage of those interested in learning more details about the explosions or looking to contribute to fundraising efforts. For example, the Twitter account @_BostonMarathon was created shortly after the explosions took place. The account stated it would donate $1 for each retweet and was crafted to closely resemble the legitimate Boston Marathon Twitter account (@BostonMarathon). This account has since been suspended by Twitter; however, the likelihood that similar social media accounts will surface remains high. Phishing email campaigns are also circulating using subject lines related to the Boston Marathon explosions. Do not open unexpected attachments or click on links in suspicious emails, even if the email appears to be from someone you know. US-CERT recommends that all persons interested in donating funds should go directly to established charities such as the American Red Cross. Exercise caution when interacting with social media accounts that claim to represent the best interests of those involved in the incident, and directly visit established news sources rather than conducting general search engine queries, as it can be difficult to tell which search results may lead to scam sites. Hi Jean Unless there is a very good reason to upgrade I would suggest keeping XP until you replace the computer The cost of Win7 would be better spent on a new machine in my opinion Win 7 may run on the old machine but is likely to be slow by comparison which makes the learning curve even greater and more aggravating Although XP will have support withdrawn it will still function There are plenty out there still using old operating systems quite happily It seems unnecessary expense and aggravation if its not really needed Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 15/04/2013 12:00, Jean McCarthy wrote: > Hi. > > I would like some advice on whether to upgrade my sister's laptop from > Windows XP to Windows 7 please. > My sister is 84 years old and while her laptop is getting on a bit it has > had very little use and is almost like new. > I have checked that the laptop is capable of running Windows 7 but I don't > think it will take Windows 8. > However, I have just discovered that support for Windows XP will be until > 2014. > The question is, do I upgrade to Windows 7 or leave it another year and > then purchase > a new computer running Windows 8. > > I would be very grateful for any advice the list members may have for me. > > Very many thanks in advance. > > Jean McCarthy nee Moore >
Hi. I would like some advice on whether to upgrade my sister's laptop from Windows XP to Windows 7 please. My sister is 84 years old and while her laptop is getting on a bit it has had very little use and is almost like new. I have checked that the laptop is capable of running Windows 7 but I don't think it will take Windows 8. However, I have just discovered that support for Windows XP will be until 2014. The question is, do I upgrade to Windows 7 or leave it another year and then purchase a new computer running Windows 8. I would be very grateful for any advice the list members may have for me. Very many thanks in advance. Jean McCarthy nee Moore -- http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jeanmccarthy36/ jeanmccarthy36@googlemail.com
Although I do agree with Nivard, it is important to realize that, after April 8 2014, Windows XP will become insecure and vulnerable to virus and/or security attacks... So, I think it is prudent to keep this in mind and make a plan, over the next 6 months, to upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8... This article explains things a little more clearly... http://www.howtogeek.com/147312/microsoft-is-ending-support-for-windows-xp-in-2014-what-you-need-to-know/ Regards, Kevin. Kevin ... my Thanks and Appreciation for your comments below. As I just messaged Nivard, I was swamped by heavy postings on another list and am just now getting caught. I recognize the desirability of frequent change PW change but it is a nuisance as well as a protection and it's easy to delay. When (IF) I can find the setting I plan to "compromise" and increase the setting <G> a bit if possible. Thanks for the response and my apologies for the delayed acknowledgement. Joe Lake It is a good idea to change passwords on a regular basis. Even when you are the only person using the computer. For example... If you are connected to the Internet and, by some chance, an intruder gains access to your system, a password change would lock them out. My Windows 7 computer is on a corporate network and the Password Policy is to change password every 90 days. It should prompt you to change your password a certain number of times before you are locked out. I believe this setting is in Local Security Policy >> Account Policies >> Account Lockout Policy If you choose to use the Password Policy, you should also maintain the Account Lockout Policy Regards, Kevin. After my last post I closed down and on reopening found Avast (which now includes a software updater) prompting a Flashplayer update Actually Flashplayer Active X and Flashplayer plugin for Firefox Both these updated as they should (with the usual tick box at the end where they want you to auto update without notification) So I suspect the earlier one was some nefarious person trying to get in on the act for unsuspecting users Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 12/04/2013 14:57, Nivard Ovington wrote: > As a small follow up > > After running Malwarebytes (which found nothing) > > I rechecked installed programs to find something called TUGUU SLU > > So uninstalled that > > On googling it appears to be one of those insidious progs that wants to > point to in one direction > > Hopefully I have averted further problems > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)
