An excerpt from the obituary of Mrs. W.H. Merryman "The Progress Examiner", Orleans, IN Thurs, Feb 27, 1919 Caroline Matilda Thurman, fifth of the twelve children of Philip E. and Magdalene Thurman, was born in Staunton, Va., May 14, 1836. She came with her parents to Indiana when a child and lived on a farm in Floyd county, where they became a representative family. In 1852, at the age of 16 years, she was united in marriage to John Barton COMPTON. To this union were born three sons, one of whom died in infancy, the two surviving are William H. Compton of Indianapolis and Charles L. Compton of St. Elmo, Ill. Her husband died in the service of his country during the civil war, leaving her with her two little boys to fight the bat- tle of existence. In 1867 she was married to William H. Merryman. She passed to her eternal home Thursday, Feb. 20, 1919, aged 82 years, 9 months and 6 days. Funeral was held Sat. morning, Feb. 22, and interment followed in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. ************* ********************* *****************
