Thomas1 Cumpton; (Family tradition was that the Cumpton family migrated from New England to Kentucky and Tennessee before settling near Calhoun in Henry County, Missouri and Pleasant Gap and Spruce in Bates County, Missouri. It is said that Rev. Thomas Cumpton became widely known as "The Fighting Preacher," because of his talents in the "manly art of fisticuffs." The story goes that the popular pastime among a group of men who gathered was to challenge eacher in bare knuckle combat. Rev. Cumpton was declared the champion of Kentucky before coming to Missouri. A Kentuckian supposedly came to Missouri to make Rev. Cumpton defend his crown. After unsucessfully discouraging the Kentuckian, Rev. Cumpton finally consented to defend his crown, which he did with his powerful fists and the visitor returned to Kentucky defeated) was born circa 1780 at KY. He married Sinia J. Simpson, daughter of Thomas Simpson and Mary Knight, circa 1800 at TN. He died before 1840 at Johnson Co, MO. Children of Rev. Thomas1 Cumpton and Sinia J. Simpson were as follows: 1. i. Thomas Simpson2, born 18 Jun 1804 at TN; married Mary Hay Stapp. ii. Sinia; (Married by W. Simpson) was born circa 1810. She married Alford Wolliver on 17 May 1835 at Johnson Co, MO. Generation Two 1. Thomas Simpson2 Cumpton (Thomas1) was born on 18 Jun 1804 at TN. He married Mary Hay Stapp, daughter of Benjamin Stapp and Martha Lapsley, on 28 Sep 1826 at Howard Co, MO. He died on 22 Apr 1861 at Spruce, Bates Co, MO, at age 56. He was buried circa 24 Apr 1861 at Dickison Cemetery, Bates Co, MO. He appeared on the census of 1840 at 1840 Census, Johnson Co, MO. Children of Thomas Simpson2 Cumpton and Mary Hay Stapp were as follows: i. Alonzo M.3 was born on 27 Aug 1827 at Howard Co, MO. He married Mary A. Milton on 10 May 1844. He married Mary M. Gower in Jan 1848. He died on 11 Jun 1864 at age 36. 2. ii. Martha Ann, born 15 Jan 1829 at Howard Co, MO; married William Croley. iii. James L. was born on 24 Jan 1831 at Howard Co, MO. He married Sarah A. (Cumpton) circa 1851. iv. John Milton was born on 30 Apr 1833 at Howard Co, MO. He married Angeline Elizabeth Hedrick on 21 Oct 1860 at Bates Co, MO. He died on 6 Oct 1911 at Bates Co, MO, at age 78. He was buried circa 8 Oct 1911 at Dickison Cemetery, Bates Co, MO. v. Elizabeth J. was born on 28 Dec 1835 at Howard Co, MO. vi. Thomas J. was born on 7 Mar 1837 at Howard Co, MO. vii. Benjamin Franklin was born on 23 Jan 1839 at Johnson Co, MO. He married Nancy Louisa Rains on 22 Apr 1860. He died on 5 Oct 1885 at Bates Co, MO, at age 46. He was buried circa 7 Oct 1885 at Myers Cemetery, Bates Co, MO. viii. Alva G. was born on 20 Feb 1841 at Johnson Co, MO. ix. William G. was born on 28 Apr 1843 at Johnson Co, MO. He married Minerva Laurentia Hedrick on 23 Mar 1862 at Bates Co, MO. He died on 22 Dec 1921 at Bates Co, MO, at age 78. He was buried circa 24 Dec 1921 at Dickison Cemetery, Bates Co, MO. x. Mary M. was born circa 1852 at Johnson Co, MO. Generation Three 2. Martha Ann3 Cumpton (Thomas2, Thomas1) was born on 15 Jan 1829 at Howard Co, MO. She married William Croley, son of Littleberry Crowley, on 16 Jan 1851 at Johnson Co, MO. She died circa 1855. Children of Martha Ann3 Cumpton and William Croley were: i. James Lafayette4 was born on 2 Feb 1852 at Johnson Co, MO. He married Susie Rowland in 1874 at Fannin Co, TX. He married Olivia Loper (Croley) circa 1892 at TX. He married Lillie May Sanders circa 1903 at Morris Co, TX. He died in Nov 1918 at Cason, Morris Co, TX, at age 66.
