The given names are frequently handed down, unfortunately, William and Joseph are just too popular. Thomas Hoyle & Arthur Michael COMPTON of Frome, Somerset, England My grandfather Arthur Michael COMPTON was born an Anglican in Frome, Somerset, England, September 12, 1867. Arthur Michael was a railroad engineer for the Great Northern Railroad, finishing his career in Minot, ND. Arthur Michael was descended from a long line of English, clergymen, prominent among whom was his father, the Rev. Thomas Hoyle Compton, of St. Katherine's (Anglican) of Woodlands Frome for many years, and Bishop Whydam of Salisbury cathedral of Wiltshire, Eng. Arthur Michael died 7 April 1927 in Minot ND His sister Alice Lucy COMPTON was born in Shalfleet on the Isle of Wight September 15, 1862. In 1881 she was studying at Bishop Otter College, Subdeanery, Sussex, England, then immigrated to USA about 1899. Alice died 6 Jan 1935 in Paducah , KY. Arthur Michael's parents are the Rev. Thomas Hoyle COMPTON b August 08, 1827, Manchester, England, and Emma Sarah WINZAR, b May 16, 1836. They were married September 26, 1855 at Saint Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England The records show that Thomas Hoyle COMPTON was born into a Quaker family. Why and when he switched to the Anglican church, I do not know. The 1881 census lists the following additional brothers and sisters. EMMA ELIZABETH COMPTON, aged 23, b Mapledurham, Oxfordshire. MARGARET SUSAN MARY COMPTON, aged 22, b Salisbury, Wiltshire. WALTER JOSEPH COMPTON, aged 21, Frome, Somerset. (1881 staying with his uncle, Joseph Compton) LEONARD WILLIAM COMPTON, aged 16, b Frome, Somerset. (1881 at school - St Andrews College, Chardstock, Dorset) THEODORA COMPTON, aged 15, b Frome, Somerset. ARTHUR MICHAEL THOMAS COMPTON, aged 13, b Frome, Somerset. (1881 at school in Clifton, Gloucestershire) FRANCIS JOHN COMPTON, aged 12, b Frome, Somerset. (1881 at school in Clifton, Gloucestershire) WINIFRED JONES COMPTON, aged 10, b Frome, Somerset. EDWARD TENISON COMPTON, aged 8, b Frome, Somerset. (1881 at school - St Andrews College, Chardstock, Dorset) EDITH ELLEN COMPTON, aged 7, b Woodlands Frome, Somerset. Alice I know ended up in Paducah , KY and Arthur Michael ended up in Minot, ND. The Rev. Thomas Hoyle Compton's parents are Joseph Compton, b February 28, 1785, Saint Gabriel Fenchurch, Fenchurch Street, London, London, England, d March 29, 1872, and Elizabeth Hoyle, b August 24, 1793, d June 26, 1853. Joseph Compton's parents are Thomas Compton, and Mary Townsend, b 1753, Fenchurch Street, London. Thomas Compton's parents are William Compton, a Cooper living in Redbridge, Hampshire and his wife Sarah. Emma Sarah WINZAR was Christened March 19, 1837 at Endless Street Independent, Salisbury, Wiltshire, Eng. Her parents are John WINZAR and Emma HALL.
