Hi Baldwin, Several things have changed my mind after finding the article in the Tn Historical Quarterly that indicated that William and Henry were cousins. (I think I mentioned that article to you). I received some documents from a Don Mullen and from George Maynard, that concerned a Clark family reunion (descendents of Hays and Elizabeth Briscoe) and quoted from the "old" Compton bible from the collection of J. Emerick Nagy saying that Williams mother was Charity Leiper. I wrote several people in Nashville who were mentioned as contributors to the reunion and received a reply from a Mr. McClarnon - his letter quoted from the bible of Mrs Charity Anne Horn Clark, widow of Rev. Martin Clark, dated 1877, "Elizabeth Brisco Compton, Daughter of William Compton and Susan Mullen, He (William) was the son of a William Compton and Charity Lieper(no dates)" Mr. McClarnon (from his hand writing) appeared to be very old. I sent him some stuff I had from the Battle Book which he said that he wanted - this was in October of '99. I havent heard from him since. In my correspondence with him I had asked about the reference to the Old Compton bible, his letter said only that it was no longer available. In my 2nd letter I asked for clarification. Ive not heard from him since. Last week I was contacted by 2 descendents of Henry- Ill copy their emails and forward them to you later. (I see from email today that you have been in contact with them). The whole thing is confusing - Clark
