    1. Compton in old Maryland
    2. Selena Fox
    3. Greetings, Seeking information on my Compton (Crompton) ancestors in colonial Maryland. I am descended from ANN COMPTON, who married Col. John Weems (1737-1813) of Calvert County, Maryland. She was the daughter of: THOMAS COMPTON of Maryland may have lived in Calvert County. He died in 1749 in Maryland. Thomas Compton may have been the builder of the plantation house Cedar Hill in Calvert County, Maryland. In 1745 Thomas Compton married Mary Skinner (widow of Robert/Roger Wheeler who died in 1728, and then widow of Joesph Wilkinson who died 1734). Mary Skinner was daughter of Dr. William Skinner (died 1738) and Elizabeth Mackall (born 1665), both of Calvert County, Maryland. After Thomas Compton died, his widow Mary Skinner Compton married Dr. James Weems (of Calvert County), who was the father of Col. John Weems, husband of ANN COMPTON mentioned above. I have discovered that the Compton surname sometimes was spelled Crumpton, Crompton, Cumpton, and other ways. Have you encountered my Compton ancestors as part of your own research? Do you have any info on Comptons in Maryland and/or England in the 1600's and early 1700's that might be possible parents or siblings of Thomas Compton? Do you have any suggestions of books and other resources which I might search as part of my research into my Compton roots in old Maryland? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Selena Fox selena@mhtc.net PO Box 219, Mt. Horeb, WI 53572 USA

    3. Hi All, Has anyone been able to confirm if Henry Compton, Bishop of London (1632-1713) was the son of Lord Spencer Compton (1601-1643)? Did he ever marry and to whom? Did he have any children and was John Compton of Roxbury, MA who married Susanna Freeman the Bishop's son. Was the John Compton d: 1718 in Charles Co. who married Mary Clarke, the son of John and Susanna Freeman Compton? Thanks for any input. Evelyn Penn Valley, CA

    1. Re: [WINDSOR-L] Re: WINDSOR-D Digest V99 #1
    2. I was so happy to see your posting for your Christopher Windsor from near Old Sarum (Salisbury) as I have my COMPTON's and WINZAR's from the same area. My Winzar's spell their name different but with phonetic spelling in use back then, they could still be kin, so here is my story. I would appreciate it if you would check it out and see if we can connect the dots. My grandfather Arthur Michael COMPTON was born in England. His birthday is unclear. His death certificate states his birthday as 12 Sept. 1863, his obituary says 12 Sept 1864, however his birthday book has his birthday entered as 14 Sept 1867. Arthur Michael was a railroad engineer for the Great Northern Railroad, finishing his career in Minot, ND. Arthur Michael was decended from a long line of English, Episcopal clergymen, prominent among whom was Bishop Whydam of Salisbury cathedral of Wiltshire, Eng. Arthur Michael died 7 April 1927 in Minot ND His sister Alice Lucy COMPTON was born Sept 1872, then at age 28, immigrated to USA 1899. She was born on the Isle of Wight, England, and received her primary education in the schools of Wight before being graduated from a British college. Alice died 6 Jan 1935 in Paducah , KY. Arthur Michael's parents are Thomas Hoyle COMPTON and Emma Sarah WINZAR. I do not have their birth dates, but they were married September 26, 1855 at Saint Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. People standing up for them at the wedding included Joseph Compton (Gentleman - Thomas' father) and Elizabeth Compton. Emma Sarah WINZAR was born May 16, 1836. She was Christened March 19, 1837 at Endless Street Independent, Salisbury, Wiltshire, Eng. Her parents are John WINZAR (Surgeon) and Emma HALL. Winzar's signing the marriage certificate include, Henry Winzar, John Winzar and two others that I cannot make out their initials. They appear to be J.M.Winzar and G. J. Winzar. I have also checked the church records (LDS microfilm for other Winzar's in that same church at the same time and found the following records. I have not established if they are related to my Winzar's or not. David Winzar was married to Sarah Cox. They had the following children. Henry Winzar born June 07, 1807 Mary Winzar born November 30, 1807 (obviously there is a problem with Henry's birth date but that is shat the record shows.) Mark Winzar born July 01, 1811 Elizabeth Winzar born August 1814 Martha Winzar born March 12, 1817 Isabella Graham Winzar born January 21, 1821, married November 08, 1845 to William James Robson Here are a number of other names that are identified in a Arthur Michael's birthday book but I am not sure of where they all fit into the family. Unfortunately Arthur Michael didn't bother to put in the year of the birth in many cases. Charles Christopher Compton - Jan 13 (unk) Walter Joseph Compton - Jan 19 - Walter Compton stood up for Arthur Michael at his wedding - I think this is AM's brother Lawrence Arthur Richeson - Jan 31 1920 - I think this is a son of Mildred Pearl Compton Patrick John Winzar Compton - Feb 4 (unk) George Gabriel Compton - Feb 5 (unk) Theodora Compton - Feb 16 (unk) Francis John (Jack) Compton - Feb 18 (unk) Sally Ann Compton - Mar 7 1894 (unk) Mary G. While my Comptons moved from NJ to OH and IN, I know that some of their relatives moved south from NJ. The names that I'm particularly interested in are: COMPTON, Jacob Abt. 1800Somerset Co., NJ, and COMPTON, Hugh GastonSeptember 21, 1836 My Jacob Compton married Mary Johnston/Johnson. They were from Bedminster, NJ (Somerset Co)They moved to East Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co, OH in 1819. Jacob died 17 Feb 1853 aged 73 and was buried in East Cleveland Cemetery. Their children included Eliza Ann, d 1833, Sarah d 1845 aged 32= , George b 1828, d 1865 and Hugh Gaston Compton who was born in NJ and moved to OH with them. Hugh m Eleanor Arrowsmith in Somerset Co NJ 21 Sep 1836. Hugh died 10 Oct 1844 aged 34 and is buried in Woodland Cem, Cleveland, OH= .I have a copy of his probate papers--it was incredibly complicated and dragged on for years. I am descended from Hugh and Eleanor's daughter Louise Arrowsmith Compton who married Elisha Clark Luce in 1860 in Somerse= t Co, NJ. They lived in Cleveland. I have corresponded with another researcher who gives Jacob and Mary several more children who moved on to Elkhart Co, IN: James Compton = b 1807 NJ, Ezekiel Compton b abt 1810 in NJ, and Mary Compton b in NJ. Ezekiel had a son named "Gastine" or "Hugh Gaston" b abt 1844 in IN. I have read a copy of "British and American Comptons from the Colonial Era to the Modern Day in NY, NJ, VA, TN, AL, and TX" by Delton D. Blalock, and feel sure that my Comptons are part of this family because of their common central NJ origins. However, the author did not follow all the lines, so I am missing a few links. This book follows the descendants of a William Compton (who married Mary Bowne) who moved from Long Island, NY to Monmouth Co, NJ in 1666 to escape religious persecution. They were Baptists. He paid quit rent in 1696 on 250 acres of land near Middleton, NJ. In particular, I am interested in the line of William Compton and Mary Bowne=92s 4th child, Jacob, b abt 1681 in Middletown, Monmouth, NJ, a= nd who married Elizabeth_______? Of Perth Amboy, NJ. They had at least one grandson named Jacob (son of William who was b abt 1730 in Monmouth Co, NJ). It seems possible that my Jacob comes from this line somehow. I photocopied a fair amount of this book, and would be happy to share it with you if you have not seen it. Please let me know if you have any information on Jacob compton's parents. Thank you, Mary --part0_919776860_boundary--

    1. Alabama Crumptons and Comptons
    2. Dan Crumpton
    3. copy and paste from Crumpton list by Dan: A few days ago I received "The Heritage of St. Clair County, Alabama". There are 12 Crumpton pages, and 6 Compton pages, with references. I made three (3) contacts of cousins I have never met; all from the Jesse Asa/Selina Crumpton line (Jesse or Jessie, born abt 1813 was older brother to my William, born about 1824). St. Clair County was the stomping ground for Jesse. Some of these folks will meet us at our little "Crumpton reunion" scheduled for 11:00 AM, Saturday, 27th. February, at Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church, near Westover Alabama, at which time we will install a cemetery granite marker and have a "spread lunch" around noon, and meet our distant cousins we have never seen from the "Uncle Lank Crumpton" and "Brown Crumpton" lines. My brother, Pruet, from Bessemer will be there. Oh what a wonderful time we will have!!!! All are welcome!!!!!!!!! If anyone needs a location map for the reunion site, just whistle, and I will mail or fax it to you. Love all of you. Dan (end of copy and paste) To Comptons: You are welcome too!! In the old records, my family is listed Compton as often as Crumpton!!! The very best to all of you. Dan

    1. Web Ferret search engine
    2. John Compton
    3. Compton researchers I suggest you try the Web Ferret search engine. It is a downloadable shareware program that works with your browser. It is really fast and finds more sites than dogpile or metacrawler when searching the Compton surname. Download it at http://www.ferretsoft.com/netferret/index.html They have an upgrade for $29.95 that allows better refinement of your searches. The company limits the functionality of the shareware version so you will buy the upgrade (no boolean searches). If you are willing to sort through the search list, you will find lots of new stuff. 1. Correction on Comptonology question
    2. The McNeely Family
    3. It has been brought to my attention that on p. 106 of Comptonology, it is JAMES instead of John. Sorry about my mistake. It is James I was writing about. Thanks to everyone who wrote. It was appreciated!! I was under the impression that James Compton and family moved to Russell Co, VA around 1808. Is it possible he appeared in the Guilford Co Court in Oct. 1818, or was it by a letter/affidavit, etc? I am trying to sort out two James Comptons with Guilford Co, NC connections--the James Compton on p. 106 and the James I found on the internet--the in- formation below. A James Compton, 45 & over, was enumerated in the 1820 Guilford Co. Census with wife, 4 girls and 1 boy. I found the following at North Carolina US GenWeb Archives- Military-Pension Roll, 1835: NC Pension Roll of 1835 James Compton Guilford Co Private Maryland Cont'l Line $96.00 Annual allowance $1,170.06 Amt. received May 21, 1819 pension started Age 81 Died Sept. 5, 1831 Any comments on this will be welcomed.
