As others are doing, I am also searching for info on William Fuller Compton. 3. Looking for information on William Compton, who married Elizabeth Hilliard. They had at least two children, William, Jr., date and place of birth unknown, and Susanna, who was born in 1811 in Henley, Oxfordshire. Susanna married Charles Strange in 1831 in Langley Marish, Buckinghamshire. She was a resident of the parish at the time of her marriage. They later lived in High Wycombe. William, Jr. married Elizabeth ____. Their children were born in London begining in 1835. I don't know where William Sr. and Elizabeth Hilliard were married, but it wasn't Henley. Any suggestions welcome. Heather Olsen holsen@wam.umd.edu

    1. COMPTON/CRUMPTON DNA tests
    2. Dan Crumpton
    3. Dear fellow researchers of Compton/Crumpton/Crump/Cumpton/Crompton lines: I just received an email from Dr. Pat Williams, Benchmark Genetics, that the blood samples of myself and my 5th. cousin, Dewell Crumpton, have been analyized for chromosome "y" testing, and the samples are "identical". According to them, this proves our Crumpton ancestry. One William Crumpton, born abt. 1824 is our closest Crumpton ancestor. These two blood samples were shipped to them on 25 November 1998, so it takes awhile to get results. This comparison was instigated by the article, "Jefferson and Sally", in U.S. News & World Report magazine, 9 Nov 1998. Now that we have an initial "basis" for comparison, some interesting possible "match-ups" on the horizon? (1) Charles David Crumpton (Memphis, TN) Charles is the son of John Rives Crumpton and his line goes all the way to Henry Crumpton, who sailed from Bristol England to American in 1665. (2) John Bull Crumpton's descendents and (3) Charles Compton's ancestors (It's possible I came out of the South Carolina Greenville/Laurens County Compton line in mid 1700s., or it's possible Charles came out of that Crumpton line). I will be glad to mail a "summary report of results", and "how to do test", for those interested. Please let me have your mailing address, and you will hear from me in due time. The best to all of you. Dan Crumpton email gen@Thomson.net

    1. Rev. Thomas Cumpton
    2. William C. Winter
    3. In Bates County, Missouri is a tombstone that reads, "Sina J., wife of Rev. Thomas Cumpton, 1752-1858." Sina lived to the ripe old age of 106, an astounding age for someone born before the Revolutionary War! Her husband, Rev. Thomas Cumpton became widely known as "The Fighting Preacher," because of his talents in the "manly art of fisticuffs." He was one of a group of men who challenged each other in bare knuckle combat. Rev. Cumpton was the champion of Kentucky before coming to Missouri. A Kentuckian supposedly came to Missouri to make Rev. Cumpton defend his crown, which he did with his powerful fists and the visitor returned to Kentucky defeated. Does anyone recognize this story from their family lore?? We would like to know more about Rev. Cumpton and his wife, Sina. The Cumpton and Compton families are intertwined so his name could also have a Compton link. Kay Winter Colorado Springs, CO

I now have this line back 7 generations!! Thanks to all of you on the FREEMAN and FAUQUIER COUNTY LIS= TS who have helped me out!! Mike Wennin "To my youngest daughter Sally, to have feather bed and household furnitur= e with full benefits and profits of part of her Grandfather, George William= =92s estate, which was bequeathed to her Mother =96 this to descend at her Moth= er=92s death. Sons, William James, Garrett, Nathani= el Freeman; and daughter Elizabeth Fletcher (wife of John) to have money from sale of land. Executors- Wife, sons, William and James. Witnessed by Samuel Wharton, William Williams, James Routt." There is a more detailed copy of this will that I did not get a chance to copy....if anyone is interested in it, I will have it next week. Another document that I have yet to copy gives certain slaves to each of t= he children in 1782. James Sr. was first married to Mary Compton in 1765 and then to Margaret Williams on 26th of March 1782. Sally must have been the daughter of Margaret and the rest of the children were Mary=92s. I also have the will of George Williams, father of Margaret if anyone is interested. The 1787 Tax list of Fauquier Co. shows James Sr. paying tax on 8 slaves (= 5 over 16), 8 horses and 13 cattle. James=92 father was also James who died in 1763 in Prince William County, = VA. His mother's name was Elizabeth. James must have been a tobacco farmer as there is legal documentation mentioning him and 1000 pounds of tobacco. Neighbors of James in the late 1780's were George Williams, Charles Duncan= , William Settle and others. It is interesting to see how all these familie= s intermarried during that time. --part0_921425738_boundary--

    3. >Has anyone been able to get the web site that Mike posted on 3-3-99? >http://www.famiysearch.org > >I have tried unsuccessfully. > >Cheryl Greetings, Cheryl, I just learned from a researcher on another family list I am on that the Family Search URL won't be active until March 18. Also, note that family is completely spelled out in the URL -- the correct URL is http://www.familysearch.org Hope this helps. I plan to check out this site in my on-going quest to get info about my Compton ancestors as well as other lines. Best Wishes, Selena
