This is a note my sister sent out this morning to the Covington County, AL E-group. There has been a lot of discussion lately on the book A Compton Family History by Thomas Heflin Compton. She talks about some interesting things she has found on comparing two different copies of the same book. Thought the group might be interested. Ray Good Morning Everyone, Does anyone have access to Pike County Census 1860 or later? I am trying to find more information on my gg grandfathers line. His name is Burl Washington MCLEOD b. Apr 55 Pike Co. AL His father name is suppose to be Andrew. Burl died 1908 in Covington Co. AL He married Mahala Josephine (Jody) POWELL Aug. 2, 1881 Pike County possibly. Jody b.24 Oct. 1864 Coffee Co. AL d.30 Oct. 1941 Andalusia, AL They had 2 children Rosetta MCLEOD (my g grandmother) b. 5 Aug. 1884 Pike Co. AL and Grady MCLEOD b.15 Nov 1888 Pike Co. AL Rosetta MCLEOD was 2nd wife of Jefferson L. Caney COMPTON Also in the Pike County area I've been told my g. grandmother Melissa SPENCE was born March 1867 died in the Covington Co. area sometime in the 1930's this is all the information I have on her. She married William Edward LUNSFORD in Covington Co. 1885 If anyone has access to any Pike County records and wouldn't mind looking for the Spence and McLeod names I have mentioned it would be greatly appreciated. You can email directly at Bethy55@aol.com that way the whole group doesn't have so much mail to read that doesn't pertain to their lines. As to the Compton Book. I went up this summer and visited my great aunt in Andalusia and had such a wonderful time. Alot bigger than I remember it being 35 years ago. LOL We were talking genealogy and she pulled out her copy of the Compton Book. The first thing I noticed was in the back of her copy she had copies of marriage license, estate records and several other items. I own a copy of the book myself and mine did not have these things in it. Aunt Rosa Lee Compton Dubose Johnson was kind enough to let me bring her copy back home with me so that I could compare the two books. I found that she had about 30 or so pages in hers that mine didn't have. Also on a couple of pages hers would have information on it to where my page had some different information on it. In my book I found 50 or more pages (just a guess) that hers didn't have. After page 130 have a lot of supplement pages to 130 i.e. 130a, 130b, etc. my aunts book did not have these. I also had a supplemental index that her book didn't have. While I was comparing books I was paper clipping the different pages that one had that the other didn't so I could make copies of those pages to put in our books. Unfortunately after I made the copies I didn't keep the pages marked. I know for sure which pages I copied from my aunts book because those pages are white in my old Compton book. I am just not sure of all the pages in my book that she didn't have that I made copies of. The main purpose of this is to let everyone know that owns the Compton Family Book that they may be missing some pages and want to check their book out. I would be happy to try and help anyone complete their book but in exchange I may need to borrow someones that is missing the supplemental pages I mentioned so I can mark all the pages in my book again. Again I can be contacted at Bethy55@aol.com or GSW31743@aol.com One more thing before I close this. Does anyone in the group have any Waldrop/Waldrip/Wardrope and various other spellings in their family tree that lived in AL in 1800's? If so I would love to hear from you. Thank you, Beth Lunsford Waldrop Dwight Ray Lunsford Oklahoma City, OK e-mail: rluns@icon.net rlunsford@netzero.net Family Info: http://www.icon.net/~rluns/index.html

Thank you everyone who responded to my message about obtaining the Comptonology Papers. I now have my answer. Compton I am looking for is Albert Harvey Compton. Died 1897 in Scranton PA. I have no mother or father but someone suggested a Sarah Compton that may have been Sarah House on the 1860 census. She had a 6 yr old son Albert but no husband listed. She was living with William House at the time and was 26, Albert was 6. Does anyone reconize these people? Michele Compton Murphy Me1chele@aol.com
Comptonology is a really wonderful resource and well worth the money. It's $55.00 for the whole set which comes in a binder and for an additional $15/yr you will get updates. I believe the contact person is William Compton at 6005 Green Valley Rd Knoxville, TN 37914 www.aimsinc.com/EnglishScottish This was one of the best research tools I bought for my Compton research. Looking for information on the family of Augustus Compton, born about 1760 in Kentucky. He married Anne Threlkeld and they may have lived in Nelson County, Kentucky. I received last week a book The Culpeper Classes by John Blankenbaker, because he and I work on our German ancestors who were also in the Culpeper area. That county later was broken up into Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock Counties. This book is about the militia of Va in 1780 and the drafts. I do not know how to better explain it but I got it to see how many of my German and other folks were in the county. I found in going thru the index the following Comptons Auguston(?-has to be the Augustine(, Augustus-he was in list #9), Philip, Walter (both of these in list #42)and Zachariah(list #43). Don't know if this helps anyone or not but it does mention those known Comptons in Culpeper Co. that I have seen people write about. Sarah Browder
I am descended from the same line and need help on Zachariah & Mary Ann Middleton. Anyone know anthing about the Middleton Family? My records show: And I really could be way off in some of the places and dates! ZACHARIAH COMPTON B. LaPlata Parish, Charles Co, MD 1734 (1737?) (Son of Matthew Compton B. 26 Jan 1709 & Rachael Howard B. 1714) Married: 1777--Charles Co. Md Mary Ann Middleton (Daughter of James Middleton and ?????? Zachariah's Estate was appraised 19 Apr 1790 in Culpepper, VA (However he died in Mercer Co WV which is now Montgomery Co, VA) From VA Genealogy in 2-1984, I found that Zach. and Mary came to VA from the Eastern Shore of MD. They're ancestors from Lord Compton, who settled 2 of his sons on a grant of land in MD. Their children are ???? however, I do much on the one in my line: E. Howard Compton B. 7 Jul 1777 and married 23 Jan 1800 in Culpepper, VA Elizabeth Yates B. 27 Oct 1782 in Louisa, VA. Hope to hear from MANY of you! Catherine Thorson
Charles, I have Zachariah COMPTON in my files but no Augustus. Of course this doesn't mean your information isn't correct as my data is far from perfect. This said, here is what I have: Children of Zachariah COMPTON (b. March 19, 1738/9 in Charles Co., Md.; d. 1790, Culpeper Co., VA; m. 1777) and Mary MIDDLETON: 1.Howard, b. July 7, 1777, d. Jan 30 1866, m. Elizabeth YATES, Jan. 23, 1800, Culpeper Co. 2.George, m. Sarah DUKE 3.Daniel, b. Aug 1, 1779, d. Oct 18, 1860, Culpeper Co. As you can see, I have the marriage date for Zachariah as 1777 which is about 20 years off your data and his birthdate in 1738 would make him an extremely young father for your Augustus. I cannot vouch for my dates as I did not do the research but maybe it will give you some help. Elizabeth Armstrong
Am descended from Augustus [Augustine] Compton from Culpepper Co, Va. born ca 1750/1755 and think he is son of Zachariah Compton and Mary Middleton. Served in 6th Cont. Line and 10th Cont Line 1777-1783 - wounded Battle of Brandywine. Moved to Nelson Co [Lincoln Co] Ky where he married Ann Threlkeld 14 June 1784. Died late 1789 or early 1790 leaving widow and 3 children. Would like to know more about his parentage and earlier Comptons in Va. Charles R. Craig

If not - just delete it. Sharon From: BMarble@aol.com To: HARLOW-L@rootsweb.com I just received word today that all Wal-Mart's nation wide are sponsoring a National Veteran's Wall to be built in Washington D C. To promote this wall they are offering a free 5x7 copy of your veteran's pictures. They will make 2 copies of the photograph, give you one and keep the other to display in an in-store collage. After that, Wal-Mart will send their photographs to Washington D C where it will be placed on a star on the National Veteran's wall. The picture must be a veteran IN UNIFORM and you will need to supply the following information: Name of Veteran Rank Branch of Service Dates of Service Unit This information will be included on the star that contains the photograph. I think this is a great idea and hope that all of you veteran's out there will take advantage of this offer and take your place of honor on this wall. Also, they are including pictures of Civil War veterans so start digging in those closets and boxes for your family veteran's. Please don't send me questions but check with your local Wal-Mart if you need more details. I did call my local Wal-Mart to verify this promotion amd received confirmation. I asked if this was being done nation wide and they said as long as they have a photo-lab at the store this offer is vaild. The deadline is Nov 11 so don't wait too long. Brenda Marble
Hello everybody: A few years ago, I downloaded a GEDCOM file from one of the genealogical mailing lists. It was called "Pendleton File" as best as I can recall(named after Pendleton District, SC, I suppose). Anyway, this file got a bad reputation and a bum rap because it was so huge ! It took hours to process the file....literally hours, because of its size. So, many people just gave up on ever looking in the file. This file contains 157,302 people! I have extracted all of the COMPTONS from this file and will make this smaller COMPTON file available to you all on individual requests. These COMPTONS with their associated ancestors and descendants number 409 individuals. PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY 1. There are two separate files available. One is a .FTW file for those of you which use the Family Tree Maker program ONLY. (I used version 6 to prepare the file). The other option is a .GED file, which may be opened and used by many other programs. Note that this file is for use in a genealogical program, many of which are on the market (like Family Tree Maker, Brothers Keeper, PAF, on and on). SPECIFY WHICH FILE TYPE YOU WANT. The file name is "Compton from Pendleton". 2. Please send your request to my email address: ccompton@coosavalley.net Let's not clog up the mailing list for this....OK ? 3. Understand that I am NOT a computer guru. I do not know how to install files in your computer programs or operate your genealogical program. I am NOT qualified to answer questions or supply help along those lines. I just can't do it. Charlie Charles S. Compton 466 Roberts Circle Lincoln, Al., 35096
Dear Ruth: Charlie Compton has sent to me your following memo: copy and paste: I sure do hpe that you can help. I am searching for any information about my GG Grandfather Luke Compton. I have found him on the 1850 census in Anderson County, SC at the age of 70, his wife Sarah Stumper was age 32, which would lead you to think she might be a second wife. Children listed are as follows: Martha age 12, Charity age 10, Nancy age 8, Amanda age 6 and Andrew age 2. My Great Grandfather Harve C. was born 06 June 1853 in SC. They disappear until Harve shows up on the 1880 census in Greene Co., TN and his mother is living with him, she has remarried as her name is Sarah Cogburn. Any thing at all sure will be a help, many thanks Ruth end of note from Ruth: Ruth, I descend from Luke Crumpton, born about 1760, and my Luke Crumpton/Compton was HH in Greenville County from 1790 to 1840. Most of the time he is listed as Crumpton, but sometimes as Compton. Descendents from his sons, John, Luke, William go by Crumpton; Descendents from his son David, go by Compton, and we have not been able to trace any descendents from his sons James and Edmond. Yes, we have found your Luke Compton, as follows: In 1850 Anderson County, SC census 725/275 Luke Compton 70 M Laboarer b. S.C. Sarah " 32 F " Martha " 12 F " Charity " 10 F " Nancy 8 F " Amanda 6 F " Andrews 3 M ' This Luke Compton was born about 1780, and if this is correct, could not be my Luke Crumpton. Is he the one who married his niece??? I had a name Sarah Unknown for his wife. Let's look at the 1830 Greenville Co. SC census. Pg 187 Jeremiah Crumpton b. 1790-1800 (not traced) Pg 287 Luke Crumpton (Gap Creek) b. 1780-1790 (could be your Luke) Pg 287 Walker Crumpton b. 1800-1810 (not traced) Pg 288 David Crumpton b. 1800-1810 ( This David, who came to Alabama abt 1838, I believe, was son of my Luke Crumpton ) Pg 290 Luke Crumpton b. 1760-1770 (My Luke, I believe) (I might add, Luke Crumpton, Sr. had a son, Luke Crumpton, Jr., and this Luke, Jr. was HH in Bibb County, AL in 1830, along with his brothers John and James, and his brother William was over in St. Clair, AL, HH in 1830). Ruth, I suggest that you subscribe to the Compton List and Crumpton List. I will be glad to subscribe you to the Crumpton List, just let me know.
