My niece, Nancy Crumpton Jones, in Savannah gave me a Crumpton button. I'm looking at it now. Her boyfriend obtained it for us. It measures about 3/4 inch in diameter and silver in appearance. It looks like a military button with what appears to be an eagle on the outside (appearance side). On the inside is "Crumpton" . I am told these buttons were made in 1810 or 1811 (possibly Philladelphia or New York) for use my our military in the War of 1812. Would appreciate any help out there to help trace the Crumpton family who made these buttons. Many thanks, Dan Crumpton email gen@Thomson.net
Dear Tom: In the late 1700s', and early 1800s' ,in the rectangle area of Spartanburg, Greenville, Anderson, Laurens, Pendleton and Fairfield Counties, South Carolina, there were families, by different spellings, Compton, Crumpton and Crompton. We know that some of the same families were "spelled" differently by different people; for instance, my Luke Crumpton was spelled at least these three (3) different ways in the deed, court cases and census references. My father and his grandfather had the name Crumpton, but I am researching other spellings for earlier ancestors. Many thanks, and I'll shoot you what I have on Crompton spellings. Please give me you mailing address. Hi List, Looking for leads on the following COMPTON family which probably lived in the southwestern Virginia counties of Buchanan, Russell, and Dickenson, and possibly in adjacent Pike County, KY. Don't have any firm dates, but I would estimate that Meshack was born about 1880, Bartemus about 1900 and Basil about 1920. Someone is bound to recall these names if they have seen them !! :>)) Descendants of Meshack Compton 1 Meshack Compton ......... 2 Bartemus Compton ............. +Emma Viola Deel .................... 3 Basil Compton ........................ +Helen Atwood Hale b: April 12, 1922 in Council, Buchanan County, Virginia m: February 06, 1941 in Pikeville, Pike County, Kentucky Any leads would be greatly appreciated. here is a letter that was posted to the TRAIL family site by Jackie McAbee : Wednesday, December 29, 1999 1859 letter to Barbara Smith Compton from Franklin Smith Medium, Mashall County, Tn. Aug. 1, 1859 Dear Sister, I received your lines the other day which gave me account of your family and the sickness you have had with you. I am glad to hear you are all better and I hope these lines fine you all still getting better. We have had sickness amongst us all this season up till within a few days past which has terninaed fatally to one of us and it falls to my painful duty to record to you the deah of my Dear , Dear wife. Betsy departed this life on the 29th. of July last after an illness of near six months. Thus I have lost my best comforter and friend in this world. We have had other sickness come in the family. Robert has been sick nearly all this season and is not well yet. I can/t tell you how he is just now. I will hear from him this evening and I will let you know before I seal this. Poor Bob he is like something wild he was so at home and I have not heard from him but once, then I shall hear from him as I said above. Julian has been sick with chill and fever about the time of her mother/s death and since but has got better and is now is getting tolerable stout again. There has been another death in our neighborhood. Benjamine/s wife/s mother died on the same day that Betsy did and was buried the same day and at the same place, tho not immediately at the same hour. She was a Mrs. Wrinter. Jane has had to participate some in our troubles as death entered her abode and tore from her a little daughter about a year old, a spriely little thing could run about anywhere and had begun to talk some. It died with the Flux. Now, Barbara, my dear wife is taken from me. She was my best friend, my nearest friend, my dearest friend, my bosom friend, my comforter and conseler to be torn from me the one of all others the least willing to spae and the center of the family for it is well known that we had no women to spare. It is almost unbearable. I can/t tell you anything about it and you will never know nor no one else, till they they experience it them selves and the reflection that it is so and can never be other wise is as almost unbearable as any for the mind will wonder in spite of all you can do. I had thought I would try and fix to work less but that is denied me now for I shall have to work the more to try to fill up the gap in the hours by buying cloth and hiring weaving for Julia can/t do for us all. I would have sent for you but the distance and knowing that it would do no one any good I did not do it. I hae heard from Robert since I began my letter and he was no better if anything was wors so I Will come to a close. I can do no more talking than writing so come up when you can as I would be glad to see you all. So no more at present but remains your brother till death. Franklin Smith We the following disinterested parties bear witness that the above statement is an exact copy of the original letter written by Franklin Smith. Jan. 8, 1935 W.D. Walker, Pittsburg Kansas Josephine Johnson Pittsburg, Kansas ( Franklin and Barbara were childen of Sarah(Sallie) Trail and William Smith. Franklin was maried to Elizabeth Bearden and Barbara married Isaac Compton)
COMPTON files I have some information on 4 generations before the COMPTON I start out with here, but it has a lot of speculation. This is what I have: Ebenezer Turrell COMPTON was born on Sep.3,1772 in NY. He went to Rockingham Co.,NC, and to Henry Co.,VA where he married Ailecy HOPPER there on May 6,1794. Ebenezer and Ailecy went to NC and some of their children were born there. About 1811, they were in Adair/Russell Co.,KY area and had the rest of their children there. Ebenezer died Sep.19,1850 and Ailecy died about 1850, both in Russell Co.,KY. The 9 children were: Jordan, Eleanor, Nancy, Mary(Polly), Bethel, Patsey, James R., Julia(Inda), Martha. Julia COMPTON, b.1815, married John Gosser about 1838, and lived in the Russell Co.,KY area, for the rest of their lives. They were my ggg grandparents. If anyone has any info on this line, please get in touch with me. Thanks. Tim Mattingly

Hi all! There seems to be two William Comptons as first settlers in east NJ in 1670s. A. Wm. Compton (b-1622, Kent, England) or his son William from Gravesend, Long Island. B. William from Massachusets/ New Hampshire area, son of John Compton (m- Susanah Freeman) One settled in Middlesex, Belford, Compton Creek, Monmouth County. The other settled in Woodbridge, less than 20 miles away to the west. One was the ancestor of a William Compton who married Sarah Sweet and migrated to Canada as United Empire Loyalists in 1783. Which one? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bob Davidson 3049 Preddy Creek Road Charlottesville, VA 22911 Home phone 804-975-1608 Fax phone 804-975-1708 Email rdavidson@cstone.net ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Hello again. Don't you just hate it, to see somebody lose their mind right in front of you ! For starters, the list I referred to is SCROOTS-L@rootsweb.com, not the what-ever-it-was that I typed. I also neglected to insert the message that I was trying to relay to you. Sorry.....duh. Greetings: I know that there are a specific few of you who research your line into the state of Georgia. For those of you who are interested, read the forwarded email below. This guy has been working overtime on the SC-Roots-L mailing list, so you might want to check their archive for some of the names you research or contact him directly. I have NOT asked him for a look up. If you do ask him for a COMPTON or CRUMPTON look up and he comes back with something, please post it so we can all benefit....OK ? Merry Christmas to all of you from Alabama ! Charlie Charles S. Compton 466 Roberts Circle Lincoln, Al., 35096

Hope you all had as good a Thanksgiving as we did here in Alabama ! Lots of love and lots of family here, and I extend the same to all of you, my other family ! After the meal, those of us who could stay awake settled down and watched Chicago (Bears) and Detroit (Lions) play each other. Detroit has a center (offense squad) named COMPTON, snapped to QB for the whole game ! Anybody know who this guy belongs to ? He's quite a healthy fellow ! Charlie Charles S. I am looking for the parents of ALMERION COMPTON. He was born in Illinois in abt 1820-30. He was married to Jane (Culver) Compton. He was supposed to have been killed in Chillicoth, Missouri. It seems that he was killed by lightening while walking down the street carrying a ax over his shoulder. His children were: Anna Elizabeth Ward, Romeo, Will, Addie Ward, Ellen Connelly. Any help would be of great help. Thank you Mary Jean Gray
Am looking for information on Charity C. Compton....family rumor has it that she was a Cherokee Indian...but...who knows. She is the mother of Thurston Beauregard Hurst, Geneva Hurst, Noah C. Hurst, and Marion Hurst..... She lived in Pike County KY, in 1880 and 1900, but was born in VA?... One of Leander Lee Comptons ggrandchildren place her with that family, but we are unable to prove it.... Any information appreciated....Thanks, Judi Miniard.
