    1. Compton's, Quakers, William and Joseph Compton
    2. For those doing Quaker research, this may be of interest. Also those chasing William and Joseph Compton, here are some more William's and Joseph's. The given names are frequently handed down, unfortunately, William and Joseph are just too popular. Thomas Hoyle & Arthur Michael COMPTON of Frome, Somerset, England My grandfather Arthur Michael COMPTON was born an Anglican in Frome, Somerset, England, September 12, 1867. Arthur Michael was a railroad engineer for the Great Northern Railroad, finishing his career in Minot, ND. Arthur Michael was descended from a long line of English, clergymen, prominent among whom was his father, the Rev. Thomas Hoyle Compton, of St. Katherine's (Anglican) of Woodlands Frome for many years, and Bishop Whydam of Salisbury cathedral of Wiltshire, Eng. Arthur Michael died 7 April 1927 in Minot ND His sister Alice Lucy COMPTON was born in Shalfleet on the Isle of Wight September 15, 1862. In 1881 she was studying at Bishop Otter College, Subdeanery, Sussex, England, then immigrated to USA about 1899. Alice died 6 Jan 1935 in Paducah , KY. Arthur Michael's parents are the Rev. Thomas Hoyle COMPTON b August 08, 1827, Manchester, England, and Emma Sarah WINZAR, b May 16, 1836. They were married September 26, 1855 at Saint Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England The records show that Thomas Hoyle COMPTON was born into a Quaker family. Why and when he switched to the Anglican church, I do not know. The 1881 census lists the following additional brothers and sisters. EMMA ELIZABETH COMPTON, aged 23, b Mapledurham, Oxfordshire. MARGARET SUSAN MARY COMPTON, aged 22, b Salisbury, Wiltshire. WALTER JOSEPH COMPTON, aged 21, Frome, Somerset. (1881 staying with his uncle, Joseph Compton) LEONARD WILLIAM COMPTON, aged 16, b Frome, Somerset. (1881 at school - St Andrews College, Chardstock, Dorset) THEODORA COMPTON, aged 15, b Frome, Somerset. ARTHUR MICHAEL THOMAS COMPTON, aged 13, b Frome, Somerset. (1881 at school in Clifton, Gloucestershire) FRANCIS JOHN COMPTON, aged 12, b Frome, Somerset. (1881 at school in Clifton, Gloucestershire) WINIFRED JONES COMPTON, aged 10, b Frome, Somerset. EDWARD TENISON COMPTON, aged 8, b Frome, Somerset. (1881 at school - St Andrews College, Chardstock, Dorset) EDITH ELLEN COMPTON, aged 7, b Woodlands Frome, Somerset. CHARLES CHRISTOPHER COMPTON, aged 6, b Woodlands Frome, Somerset. PHILIP HENRY COMPTON, aged 4, Woodlands Frome, Somerset. MAURICE WINZAR COMPTON, aged 3, b Woodlands Frome, Somerset. GEORGE GABRIEL COMPTON, aged 2, b Woodlands Frome, Somerset. I am currently trying to find out where all of these brothers and sisters went to. I think Walter ended up in Canada. Alice I know ended up in Paducah , KY and Arthur Michael ended up in Minot, ND. The Rev. Thomas Hoyle Compton's parents are Joseph Compton, b February 28, 1785, Saint Gabriel Fenchurch, Fenchurch Street, London, London, England, d March 29, 1872, and Elizabeth Hoyle, b August 24, 1793, d June 26, 1853. Joseph Compton's parents are Thomas Compton, and Mary Townsend, b 1753, Fenchurch Street, London. Thomas Compton's parents are William Compton, a Cooper living in Redbridge, Hampshire and his wife Sarah. Emma Sarah WINZAR was Christened March 19, 1837 at Endless Street Independent, Salisbury, Wiltshire, Eng. Her parents are John WINZAR and Emma HALL. I am interested in exchanging information with anyone that has information about any of these COMPTON's, the WINZAR's or Bishop Whydam. Regards, Alan Compton

    3. Hi Marsha: This is a long shot, but I would highly advise you to be on the lookout (research directivity) for the COMPTONS who were members of the Quaker meetings who moved to Ohio from South Carolina prior to the War Between the States. These people were vehemently opposed to the notion of slavery and left South Carolina in great numbers...actually closing their places of worship (meeting places as they called them) and finding a more suitable environment to their beliefs. Ohio was a target destination, especially Miami. The Quakers were by and large, well educated and meticulous keepers of records, which will help you tremendously in your search. I suggest you "get shoulder deep" in this possibility until you rule it out . The names you submitted look vaguely familiar to me in reference to past looks at this group of COMPTONS from South Carolina (especially Scintha Ann Compton; this name sticks). The Quaker COMPTONS have always kept my interest as I can NOT seem to track my COMPTON line any further back in history than about 1840. My ancestors did NOT own slaves during this time and later which has always made me suspicious of a highly religious heritage (Quaker?) preventing them from doing so. Please, (1)stay in touch and (2)let us know what you find and (3)where you look from here. GOOD LUCK ! Charlie Charles S. 1. William Compton
    2. Unfortunately I don't have very much on my Compton's. I am looking for William Compton. My William was from Michigan, I know that they were living in Harbor Springs, Michigan when my great grandfather Fred was born Aug. 1, 1876. He also had two other sons, William and Benedict (probably more than that, but these are the only one's I have found anything on, so far). They moved to Crossville, Tennessee in the1880's, or possibly the early 1890's. William had died by 1910 and Jennie was living in Illinois. Well, if anyone has any info on this family, I sure would appreciate it! Rollene Compton Ricci

    1. Roll Call
    2. Hey Folks, the New Year is here and there are no messages flowing. Lets get things rolling. How about everyone recapping who, what, when and where they are searching and lets get the pot boiling again. Im searching for the parents of William Compton, b VA, 1767, d Nashville 1846. Married Susan Mullen Dec. 1799. Have extensive information on their children. May have found a link to Williams parents from a couple of old bibles. Recently found a reference to the old Compton bible that may have been in the collection of J. Emerick Nagy of Nashville. Nagy is deceased but if anyone knows anything about this collection or the old Compton bible would appreciate the information. Clark Compton, List manager, also researching: Ayers, Blackman, Clark, Gunn, Philpott, Paxton, Thomasson, White

    1. Augustine [Augustus] Compton
    2. In your e-mail of 6 Nov you said you were moving but if in late Jan I had not heard from you I should job your memory. I am looking for info on my ancestor who appears both as Augustine and Augustus Compton born ca 1750/1755. He lived in Culpepper Co, Va. and served in 6th Cont Line and 10th Cont line -- wounded at Battle of Brandywine and was at Valley Forge. Moved to Nelson Co [Lincoln Co] Ky. where he married Ann Threlkeld 14 June 1784. She was a widow of Moses Threlkeld and a daughter of James Peyton. Augustine died in late 1789 or early 1790 leaving 3 children/ We had been told that he was the son of Zachariah Compton and Mary Middleton but this is impossible as they did not even marry until 1770 so now we are not sure who his parents might be. Would you please check and see if you have any info on a Augustine [Augustus] Compton. Charles
