    2. Beverly Gardner
    3. This Catherine Compton was married to John Wilds/Wiles 10 Jan 1807 in Garrard Co KY. The will of Zachariah Compton, Bk A, pg 179, Garrard Co, and dated 25 June 1804, lists wife Catherine, daughters Betsy Ison and Sally Peter, and sons Heli (?) and Burris. Two questions: Is the Catherine Compton that married John Wilds/Wiles the widow of Zachariah? And, is this John Wilds the Sr. or Jr? 1. Elizabeth (Compton) Lynn Rutherford
    2. Dear COMPTON rootsweb: I am searching for ANY information or direction on my COMPTON gggg-grandmother. The following is ALL that I know and then she appears to drop off the face of the earth: Elizabeth 'Betsey' COMPTON, b. ?; married Nathan LYNN [Jr] 5 March 1798 in Campbell Co, KY. Abraham VASTINE posted bond and certified she was '21 years or upwards.' I do not know what relationship there might have been between Elizabeth Compton and Abraham Vastine. Using this marriage bond, I estimate her birth as circa 1777. In 1798, Nathan LYNN [Jr] is listed in the militia of Campbell Co, KY. In 1801, Cynthia Ann LYNN a known daughter was born, perhaps in Cynnthiana, Harrison Co, KY. [Cynthia married Enoch Isgrigg in 1823, presumably Ripley Co, IN, but no marriage record has been found. Their marriage is documented in other documents, including Enoch's 1833 will] In 1804, Hanna LINN/LYNN, a presumed daughter was born, in ? KY. [Hanna married Cornelius Williamson between 1820/22 possibly in Franklin or Henry Co, IN] In 1807, Campbell Co, KY, there was an inventory of estate of Nathan LYNN, The appraisers of the estate were Thomas Griffing, John Griffing and Bennett COMPTON. Do not know what possible relationship may be between Bennett COMPTON & Elizabeth COMPTON, but presume there is one. [His signature is subject to interpretation, could be Kennett Crumpton or ?] In 1808, Elizabeth (Compton) LYNN posts bond with Samuel Sayers to administer estate of Nathan LYNN. In 1809, according to "Kentucky Ancestors", Vol 10, p 20 -- A List of Deliquents in Campbell Co: Widow LYNN removed to Boon[e] Co I do not know that this is 'my' Elizabeth. 1810 Census Campbell Co, KY Lynn, Elizabeth, Head of Household Males 0-10 10-16 16-26 26-45 45+ 1 0 0 0 0 Females 0-10 10-16 16-26 26-45 45+ All Others Slaves 3 1 0 1 0 0 0 Preliminary Analysis Child (shown under () category: Year Born (est) Age in 1810 Unknown (10-16) ca1799 11 Cynthia (0-10) 1801 9 Hannah (0-10) 1804 6 Unknown female(0-10) 1800-1807 3-10 Elizabeth Lynn (26-45) est. 1777 33 [est. fits in 1765-1784 range for category] Unknown male (0-10) 1800-1807 3-10 Interestingly, and quite maddeningly, there is an Elizabeth Camp Lynn as head of household in 1810 Bell Co, KY census, shown with the same exact gender and ages for her children. Abraham Camp Vastine is also in 1810 Bell Co, KY census. Could Elizabeth have been counted in two census -- way across state at that? Is is insane to think the insertion of 'Camp' into the middle names of both Elizabeth Lynn and Abraham Vastine somehow makes reference to Campbell Co, KY? Could be way off base with those wild speculations in light of next entry. 18 May 1811 Campbell Co, KY Elizabeth Lynn m. Griffith McMellen Retherford, Mar Bond Ecx 18th of May 1811 Griffith Mc Rutherford & Elizabeth Lynn,Campbell Co. KY John Bacon co-sign bond. Griffith McMellen Retherford signs his name quite clearly spelled exactly that way. It is possible that his name is also spelled Rutherford. I have even seen an internet record of this same document which gives his name as Griffith McRutherford. After this 1811 marriage, Elizabeth (COMPTON) LYNN RUTHERFORD/RETHERFORD and her husband and children drop off the face of the earth. The two daughters that I know about marry men who were already settled in Indiana, although I can not locate any Indiana marriage records for either of them. I have been unable to locate Griffith Rutherford/Retherford on any 1820 KY, IN, IL or OH census. Does anyone have a 'missing' Elizabeth COMPTON possibly with a father, brother or cousin named Bennett COMPTON. Possibly Grifith died and Elizabeth went to live with Bennett? Any help or direction would be appreciated. Thanks, Carol Vass

    1. Augustine/Susannah Compton
    2. What is the relationship between Augustine Compton and Susannah Compton. Some say she was his dau born ca 1789 in Nelson Co., Ky. but there is no proof. Augustine was from Culpepper Co, Va and married in Nelson Co Ann Payton Threlkeld and had 3 dau before his death in 1790. Known children of his wife Ann Peyton Threlkeld are in the James Shain family bible but Susannah is not among them while her son Peyton Threlkeld is included [a half brother] and her dau Rutha Bryant, a half sister is shown. Augustine Compton rec'd land grant warrant 1970 for his service in the 6th & 10th Va Cont Line during the Rev. The land itself was not surveyed until 1792, 2 yrs after his death and not registered until 1805. The land was located in Christian Co., Ky., and was sold in 1809 by the Compton heirs to Issac Edwards. Susannah Compton married Issac Edwards 25 Oct 1804 in Ohio Co., Ky. and she is not listed as one of the Augustine Compton heirs. in the deed Issac Edwards is shown as being from Breckenridge Co., Ky. but there is no Issac Edwards in that County in 1810 thru 1840 census. Other deeds he is shown as from Hardin Co and from Shelby co. In Dec 1809 an Issac Edwards is shown married to Rachel Rice but perhaps this is another Issac Edwards. One researcher says Susannah Compton Edwarrds lived in Christian Co., Ky., and died after 1846. I do not doubt Susannah is a Compton but who is she and how is she related to Augustine. Chas

    1. Roll call re: Compton
    2. This is the family line I am currently trying to trace: Jeremiah Douglas " Jerry " Compton (b: 08-29-1856 d: 11-21-1926) married (07-03-1880 in Missouri) to Alzada sophia (possibly Alzoda) Clem (b: 10-03-1864 in Missouri d: 09-09-1945) It was once mentioned that they were possibly from Kentucky. I know the name of only one child of that union: John Walter (possibly Walker) Compton (b: 08-21-1984 d: 08-30-1914 in Harrison Idaho) John married Louisa Perkins 08-19-1905 in Kirksville Missouri. My Grandfather was a child of this union. His name was Glen Floyd Compton. I have only the information given above. At times I wonder how accurate that it is, since I have been unable to find anyone on the LDS sight and all the other sights that I have sought information on. The names linked with this family are: CLEM, PERKINS, HILLS, MACMILLAN, WILSON, STUTT, MARTIN AND MULLFORD. The stories that I remember told of one relative on this side of the family who was a boxer. Dawn-Rene' Compton

    1. Comptons/Culpeper Co,VA
    2. I received last fall a book The Culpeper Classes by John Blankenbaker, because he and I work on our German ancestors who were also in the Culpeper area. That county later was broken up into Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock Counties. This book is about the militia of Va in 1780 and the drafts. I do not know how to better explain it but I got it to see how many of my German and other folks were in the county. I found in going thru the index the following Comptons Auguston(?-has to be the Augustine(, Augustus-he was in list #9), Philip, Walter (both of these in list #42)and Zachariah(list #43). Don't know if this helps anyone or not but it does mention those known Comptons in Culpeper Co. that I have seen people write about. One person wrote me that email address was < lizarm40@bellsouth.net > I can not get a note to her as it says unknown. If she is still around get in touch and send your new address please. Hope this helps some of you fromthe Culpeper Co,VA list. Sarah Browder

    1. Compton Quarterly
    2. Hi Folks, Several list members have inquired about the Compton Quarterly that I mentioned earlier. The first edition was April,1977 and was edited by Roy Compton of Gadsden, AL. It started as the Aquilla Compton Newsletter and there may have been previous “newsletters” but evidently not a quarterly. In Nov. of 1979 a W. D. Compton of Houston, TX. took over as editor and published 3 editions. He gave it up in Jan. of 1980 and no one took over from him. There are a total of 59 pages in the 11 editions that I have. These are copies of copies that I received from Gail Compton of St. Louis and I believe Charles Compton in AL. (memory fades as age increases so Im finding). As I mentioned in my earlier email, I will make copies and mail at cost to any of you that would like to have a set. I cannot email them. If you wish a set let me know and include your snail mail address. Ill make copies as quickly as possible and let you know the cost . Clark Compton

    1. Response to Rollcall
    2. Cliff Compton
    3. Hi, This is my response to the roll call. I have been looking for a John Compton who was born in Ross County, Ohio circa 1775 - 1780. He married Catherine Davis circa 1798 maybe in Madison Co., Kentucky. There was a bond made by Simeion Davis (Catherines brother) for a marriage. I have not been able to find a copy of this bond. There were supposed to have been at least 6 boys and 1 girl. I don't know the girls name or anything about her. The names of the boys that I do have, I have not confirmed except for Nelson Compton. They are as follows: John Compton William Compton Jackson Compton Marshall Compton B: 5 March 1811 Place: , Ross Co., Ohio Nelson Compton B: 27 Nov 1812 Place: ,Ross Co., Ohio D: 1 Feb: 1903 Place: Eel River, Allen, Indiana M: Nancy Waugh 19 March 1837 in Place: ,Ross Co., Ohio? Again this is all the information that I have on John Compton and his family. He joined up to fight in the War of 1812. Was never heard from again. If anyone has any leads of information, please contact me. My e-mail address is cliff@proaxis.com. Thanks in advance. Take care and have a nice weekend. Cliff

    2. To Mike Bonner & Thomasson White I noticed your posting listing other names you are researching. I am an Echols and my GGgrandmother was Nancy Compton m. to Joel Echols in 1832, Wilson Co. TN. The only information I have found on her family came from the LDS Library. It listed her father as William Compton & mother Susan Baloris. It also listed 10 children, one being a William b. 1815 in TN. Could this be your Comptons? Could this be Susan Mullen instead of Susan Baloris? What is your interest in the Echols line? 2. Bill Compton
    3. This is in response to the request for a roll call. My ancestor, Henry Compton, was of the family of Quaker Comptons who moved from the Bush River area of South Carolina to the Miami Valley of Ohio in the early 1800's. Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy has meticulous records of this Quaker crowd, but unfortunately by gggrandfather Henry married, "contrary to discipline," a Methodist young woman named Mary Horner, so the Quaker record says nothing about her. All I know is that she was from a "pioneer family" of the Miami Valley area. If anyone can tell me more I shall really appreciate it. Henry was born October 21, 1798, in South Carolina. His parents were Stephen Compton (born August 29 1774 in South Carolina) and Dinah Milhouse. Stephen's parents were Samuel Compton, immigrant, and Elizabeth Lewis. I think they were married in Pennsylvania, but I have no idea who Elizabeth's parents were. Bill Compton - wrcomp@islc.net

Does anyone know if they had a son named William Russel? This has been one of my brick walls for quite some time. Any help would be appreciated. Beverly in Texas Beverly, The following is from a letter I received April 1999 from Ruth Held Scribner of Veedersburg IN, and it contains some of the names in your e-mail. You may already have this information. Ruth said she was 88 years old, and of course, may have died by now. If you would like her address, contact me privately. Ruth's grandfather was Seth Clark Compton, who was 90 years old when he died, and lived in Williamsport, IN. Seth was a Civil War vet, and he had a lot of brothers in West Lebanon, IN. "I remember one, Alice C, who I think married a White. The Comptons had some farm land near W. Lebanon. There was never much said about the Comptons. "I am a DAR, here is some of the lineage I used to become a member. Ada Compton married Edward Held. Ada born 2-27-1881, died June 1978, age 97. Ada was daughter of Seth Clark Compton, born 4-7-1830 near Chillicothe, Ohio, died at Williamsport, IN 12-15-1928. Seth C. Compton was child of Marshall C., born 3-4-1811 at Ross Co, Ohio, died in Warren Co, IN on 3-16-1850, and his first wife Asenath Foster, b. 1823 Pike Co, OH, died Warren Co, IN on 3-16-1856. The rest have to do with the Foster records, which I went in DAR on. "I remember someone told me they remembered some Compton twins. S.C. Compton married Maria Kiger, b. 1-31-1857, Jackson Co, Ohio. They had 2 daughters, Ada, my mother, and Jessie, who died about the age of 18 or 19. I remember well my grandfather and grandmother Compton, but never much was said about them." Cordially, Lorena

James's land dealings were apparently small and confined within his family as there is no record of rapid or large land sales or purchases. Thomas Henry died of war related problems in 1862, Richmond, VA. Cornelia married W. C. Templeton about 1869 and moved to Ashville, NC. William Berry married Alice O'Neal Day in 1873 and moved to Greenwood Co., SC. Robert James died in 1883. James's youngest sons, Charles Orr and Marcus Milton, moved to Hempstead Co., Arkansas, between 1886 and 1889. (Perhaps to join some cousins already established there). In 1889, William Whiteford Goodwin (Eliza Jane's husband) died, then Nancy died one month later in 1890. After these events, James, Eliza Jane and her seven children moved to Arkansas to join Charles Orr and Marcus Milton. James died in Arkansas in 1896. Charles S. 1. General info
    2. Just checked our subscription count - we now have 130 members on the L list and 27 on the D. List. Thought I would pass on some information that all members may not have. William H. Compton: www.aimsinc.com/englishscottish publishes Comptonology - The New series quarterly. Subscription is $15 per year(I think). He also may still have complete sets of the original Comptonology Newsletter. It was published from 1937 to 1952. Has some good information but check the sources carefully. I have a complete set of Compton Quarterly - published by various Compton researchers from 1977 to 1980. Was originally titled Aquilla Compton Family Organization. If anyone is interested Ill make copies at my cost. In my opinion the Quarterly has better documentation than Comptonology. Lets keep the info flowing. Clark

    2. I am searching for the parents and siblings of William Russell Compton b 22 Dec 1844, d 1 Sept 1877 Mechanicsville, Warren Co., IN. M Rebecca Jane Cronkhite (b 22 Jun 1852, d 17 March 1906 in Palo Alto Co., IA) on 24 Sep 1868 in Warren Co., IN. I have found the marriage record but it does not say where he was born. Some of the descendants believe his father's name was Marshall but I have been unable to verify that. He had one son, Ora, who named his son Marshall. I found a Marshall Compton who was born in Ross Co., OH and died in Warren Co., IN who was married to Asenath Foster who also died in Warren Co., IN. Does anyone know if they had a son named William Russel? This has been one of my brick walls for quite some time. Any help would be appreciated. Beverly in Texas
