I am a descendant through his daugter Mary Jane Compton born Oct 16, 1822 and who married Jesse Gillman March 16, 1841. I would love to correspond with any one researching this line. I know Henry's mother was named Charity. But who was his father and what was his mother's maiden name? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Dot Clark

    1. Almerion Compton
    2. Mary Jean
    3. I am looking for my GG-Grandfather, ALMERION COMPTON. He was supposed to have been born in Illinois. He was married to Jane Culver. About all that I know about him was he was killed during an electric storm on his way home from work in Missouri. There is talk that he was killed in Chillicothe, Missouri but I can not prove that. He and Jane had the following children Romio, Will, Ellen, Addie and Eliza who was my G-Grandmother. I am guessing that Almerion was born around 1820/30s. His wife was a school teacher and she continued teaching after his death. We do know that the girls all married and moved to the Spokane, Washington area in about 1890. Any help will greatly be appreciated as I have run into a brick wall. Thank you Mary Jean Gray

    2. Hi, Thanks for the response. I have seen James Compton and Sally Mills, in the records in Adair Co. KY They have a son named Lewis born when my g-grandfather would have been 10 years old. What makes this family so interesting is that a lot of James and Sallies children are also found in Christian Co KY where my Lewis Comptons brother Pinckney said he was born. James Compton s father is supposed to be Ebenezer, and Ebenezers brother is Banner Compton. Banner has a son named William do you know if Ebenezer has one too? Sometimes I think Banners son William may be the one I am after, I know he is married to Martha, we have a copy of a deed when he sold his land he had inherited from his father to his sister Susanna, in Adair Co. This William and Martha drop off the Earth as far as I can find. Maybe she died and he married Sally Mills. I know there is two Sally Mills, The one James is married to and Sally Mills the daughter of Archibald Mills. Archibald Mills had a son named Charles Pinckney Mills. All I know for sure is what I wrote I need help!! Thanks Jeanne.

    2. In a message dated 02/14/2000 3:47:10 AM Eastern Standard Time, COMPTON-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: << Hello; This is my response; I am still searching for the parents of Lewis Compton, b. 1840, d. 1898 m. Mary Susan Turner Abt 1858. All of the census records say he was born in Kentucky. His brother Pinckney D. Compton, b. 12 June 1844 Christian County Kentucky, d. 12 August 1920 in Russell County Kentucky, on his death certificate his parents are listed as William Compton and Sally Mills. They also have a brother Joseph R. Compton, b. Abt 1845. These three brothers where living in different households in the 1850 census in Adair County except for my g-grandfather Lewis who was in Cumberland County Kentucky. There are probably other siblings that we do not know of, there is a Mary Jane Compton in Adair County in 1850 but we have not connect her. My Dad remembers one of Lewis sisters visiting when he was young. He also remembers being told something happened and the family had to be split up. We have been able to get Pinckney D. death certificate and his Civil War record. We do not know if Lewis was born in Christian County or why the family was split up in Adair County. Any help or clues of where to look next Lewis or Joseph will be appreciated. Jeanne Compton Koopman E-mail: BKOOP1@AOL.COM >> Jeanne: This is the information that I have regarding some Adair County Compton's. I received my information from a Beulah Jackson, who has been researching the Adair family Compton's for many years. I have information that goes further back but this sounds similar to what you are looking for. James R. Compton born about 1814 in Adiar County, Ky. and died about 1894 in Metcalfe Co........ Ky. He married (1) Sarah (Sally) Mills, August 20, 1839 in Adair County, Ky. (Information from marriage records) She was born Abt. 1818 in VA., and died Abt. 1864 in Adair County, Ky. He married (2) Mary (Polly) Tarter November 14, 1864 in Adair County, Ky. Sally Mills Compton and son, Henry both died of smallpox in 1864 when Henry was home on leave from the civil war. Children of James and Sarah: 1. Henry Compton, b. about 1840 2. Jasper Compton, b. about 1842 3. Peter Compton, b. about 1843 4. Riley Compton (my ancestor), born about 1845 5. Gwinn Compton, b. about 1846 6. Achilles Killis Compton, b. about 1848 7. Lewis Compton b. about 1850 8. Leonard Compton, b. about 1852 9. Mary J. Compton, b. about 1855 10. Caleb Compton b. about 1856 11. Warren Compton, b. about 1856 My records show that their were children born to the second marriage, but children were unknown. There are similarities but do not know if we connect. Let me know if there is further information you would like. Sharon Batchelor Ingbat@aol.com

    2. --part1_31.13b9572.25d956a3_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit << Hi Cliff- Many years ago I copied several pages from a book called History of Warren County regarding my Cronkhite ancestors only I was never able to connect the Cronkhites to my Cronkhites until just recently. I have been unable to find the cover sheet for this copy so I don't know the author or the publisher or any of those things I should know. Toward the back of this section of copying is a section called biographical Sketches: Steuben Township - Warren County. In working with my Cronkhites I came upon a page 181 with the following item. "MARSHALL COMPTON was born in Ross County, Ohio, March 4, 1811, and is the fourth of the six boys born to John and Catherine (Davis) Compton, their names being -- John, William (deceased), Garret (deceased), Marshall, Nelson and Jackson. The father of Marshall was a soldier of 1812, and was badly wounded in that war, after which he devoted his life to farming. While our subject was a boy, he went to Pike County, Ohio, to learn the blacksmithing trade, at which he served six years, and afterward worked for fourteen years. In October, 1846, he came to this township, and purchased his present place. December 18, 1859, he was married to Nancy J. Nelson, which union gave issue to three children--Alice, Charles and Jesse (deceased). Mr. Compton's residence is two miles north of Marshfield, on his farm of 346 acres (20 of which, in timber, are four miles south, with 40 in Pike Township). All except the timber are under good cultivation and improvement, and are well adapted to corn, wheat, oats, and hay. He also raises horses, cattle and Berkshire hogs. Mr. Compton has a fine frame dwelling and observatory, which affords a charming view of the country. He is a Freemason; was Trustee of Kent Township several terms, and has held other minor offices." In another area of my copying from the same book I found the following: "Nine of Rev. Joh Foster 1st's granddaughters married and came here with their husbands. His sister, Asenath Foster Compton, lived near him and both are buried at Redwood Cemetery in Steuben Twp.""" Thinking Asenath might be a daughter I looked in my Cronkhite copies of Waren County, Indiana Cemetery Inscriptions and in volume II on page 70 found the following: Compton, Nancy J., w/o Marshall 3/29/1834 - 10/02/1901 Compton, Marshall d. 3/09/1893 82y 5d Compton, Wm. 1. Re: Compton's NC>AR
    2. Am searching (in vain so far) for Compton ancestors who were in Gaston County in North Carolina. Seems as though the children were orphans in 1850 and were living with a William N. Carpenter in Gaston County North Carolina. the oldest boy was named Martin V, and he was age 13 in 1850. the others were: Mary, age 11; William Albert, age 4; Sarah Jane, age 2; Margaret, age 9, and Elizabeth, age 6. However, since names were often written down by census taker from verbal instructions, the name Carpenter could have been Compton misunderstood. In 1860 I'm not sure where they were living, but believe they were in Witts Springs, Arkansas. Martin was then age 23, a farmer, and head of the household. Mary, age 21; Margaret, age 19, William, age 15, Sarah Jane, age 13, were in Arkansas but Elizabeth was living with a Nancy Lag back in North Carolina as she was pregnant out of wedlock with a boy she named Martin Luther Compton, who was my grandfather. (This tidbit came from the LDS library information, and where they got it, I do not know for they do not seem to have any other data on this family) I do not know who the parents of the children were, and since children were not named beyond 1850, cannot find out. If anybody has any information, I would appreciate having it. >From what I have been able to surmise orphan boys were sometimes hired to do farm labor, but I can't figure out why all the children were with him, and can't figure out who this William N. Carpenter is. The census does not mention a female in the census. If any one has information, I would appreciate it and would love to find some of my "cousins."

    1. Re Roll Call
    2. Hello; This is my response; I am still searching for the parents of Lewis Compton, b. 1840, d. Jeanne Compton Koopman E-mail: BKOOP1@AOL.COM
