    3. Baldwin, I have never heard of either Charity or the Leiper name in the COMPTON the research of my dad or any that I have run into. Could be. MaryPat -----Original Message----- From: Baldwin Robertson [mailto:baldwin@wizard.net] Sent: Thursday, March 02, 2000 9:24 AM To: COMPTON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Henry and William Compton of Davidson Co, TN Hi Clark, Thank you for the transcript of the bible of Henry Compton (b. 1784, KY; d. 1873 Davidson Co, TN). It says that Henry is the 2nd son of Charity. That is good evidence. You said that you believe Henry and William Compton (b. 1767, VA; d. 1846, Davidson, TN) are brothers and that their parents are Charity Leiper and William Compton. Do you have evidence? Given names can be clues of family connections. However, Henry's family and William's family have few names in common. Henry's children are: Rebecca Charity (named after her grandmothers) James W. Elizabeth W. Mary Jane Elvira Searcy Phillip Newel (after Philip Compton in 1788 KY tax list?) Thomas Ann William Henry Henrietta Sarah J. (named after her mother) William's children are: Elizabeth Briscoe (who is she named after?) William Scott (named after his mother's father) Mary Ann Shelby Felix Thomas D. M. Henry W. Susan Louisa (named partially after her mother?) There is no Charity in William's family and no Leiper in either family.

    1. CORRECTION: RATLIFF THOMPSON, b. 1767; THOMPSON RATLIFF, b. abt.1802.

    3. In attempting to correct an error in the marriage date and principals for Ratliff Thompson and Catty Compton (see query at end of this message), I further compounded the problem by making some egregious errors in follow-up posts. Here are the corrections: Ratliff THOMPSON, b. 1767, s/o Archibald Thompson and Mary Elswick, m. Catty Compton Feb 10, 1762, Green Co., Ky., per Lula Hankins Hunter's transcript of Archibald Thompson Diary posted at http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/archibald THE MARRIAGE DATE IS FEB 10, 1797. Because the diary is over 200 years olds, some of the handwriting is hard to decipher, so the 10 Feb date is likely 18 Feb. WHERE I CAME UP WITH THE 1762 IS BEYOND ON. See next para. for note about Catty's birth date. In a record posted at the KYGREEN list by Barbara Marsh and rnichols, Catty's birth date is 1797, her father is Wm. Action, and bond is by Margaret Acton. THIS IS JUST PLAIN WRONG: I DON'T KNOW WHEN CATTY WAS BORN, AND I AM PASTING BARBARA MARSH AND RNICHOLS POSTS ABOUT THE GREEN CO., MARRIAGE RECORD (PASTED BELOW). I REGRET THE ERROR. Thompson RATLIFF, b. abt. 1802, s/o Nathan Ratliff and Mary "Polly" Farmer, named in his father's 1835 will, Montgomery Co., VA., m. Nancy Bromley abt. 1822, Ky. A record for William T. Steward, Lancaster, Ark., says Stewart went to Texas with his grandfather, Thompson Ratliff, by whom he was reared. (sources include Tom Thompson, will record, and Michael Ratliff). 3. I have traced my ggg-grandfather, Larkin COMPTON, from Orange Co, Indiana, to Guilford Co, NC, where he married Becky Andrew 4 Nov 1818. Larkin is in the 1820 Guilford Co, NC Census, and has gone to Indiana by 1830. I do not believe Larkin is from Guilford Co., nor do I think he is connected with Aquilla Compton's branch in Orange Co, NC. I am inclined to think he is from South Carolina. There are other Compton marriages in Guilford Co. around the same time Larkin and Becky married, and I think the following names may tie in with him. 1. Fanney Compton & John GRISSOM, m. 11 Sept 1819. 2. Elizabeth "Betsey" Compton & Tilmon STORY, m. 3 Feb 1817. Have land records, deed records & probate records from Orange Co, IN, that tie Tilmon Story and Larkin Compton together. Larkin was made guardian of Tilmon Story's children in 1836. 3. James Compton & Mary WHITT, m. 18 Feb 1825. In the 1850 Guilford Co, Census, the Southern Division, there is a John CRUMPTON, 56, laborer, b. SC, and Mary CRUMPTON, 63, b. Guilford Co, NC.
