    3. An excerpt from the obituary of Mrs. W.H. Merryman "The Progress Examiner", Orleans, IN Thurs, Feb 27, 1919 Caroline Matilda Thurman, fifth of the twelve children of Philip E. and Magdalene Thurman, was born in Staunton, Va., May 14, 1836. She came with her parents to Indiana when a child and lived on a farm in Floyd county, where they became a representative family. In 1852, at the age of 16 years, she was united in marriage to John Barton COMPTON. To this union were born three sons, one of whom died in infancy, the two surviving are William H. Compton of Indianapolis and Charles L. Compton of St. Elmo, Ill. Her husband died in the service of his country during the civil war, leaving her with her two little boys to fight the bat- tle of existence. In 1867 she was married to William H. Merryman. She passed to her eternal home Thursday, Feb. 20, 1919, aged 82 years, 9 months and 6 days. Funeral was held Sat. morning, Feb. 22, and interment followed in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. ************* ********************* *****************

    2. The McNeely Family
    3. Hi, Haven't given up the search for the parents and siblings of Larkin Compton. Larkin was b. abt. 1796 in NC, according to census records. Larkin m. Becky Andrew 4 Nov 1818 in Guilford Co, NC; and they appear in the 1820 Guilford Co, NC census. The family eventually settled in Orange Co, IN, and the research here is coming along fairly well. The research in North Carolina has not been successful. I am working on the theory that Betsey Clumpton, who m. Tilmon Story 3 Feb 1817 in Guilford Co, NC, is a relative. Tilmon Story is in the 1830 Orange Co, IN census, bought land there, and Larkin was made guardian of his minor heirs in the late 1830's. There is also a possibility that the following may be siblings of Larkin, all the marriages took place in Guilford Co, NC. Minny Cumton Jessey Barsher 29 Aug 1797 Fanney Crumpton John Grissom 11 Sep 1819 James Crumpton Mary Whit 18 Feb 1825 Can anyone help? Lorena

    2. Gavin Gravois
    3. Hi Comptons, Congratulations on the new list address. It's great that so many have joined up they needed a bigger service. The "roll call" idea is great, too! The "Marshall-L" group has been doing this and the info gathered is amazing! My Compton is the mysterious Ms. Sarah Compton who was born circa 1792, possibly around New York. Her parents are listed only on her third marriage license, and they are stated as simply Joseph Compton and Anna Vendoosen (probably VanDeusan) of New York. Sarah's first husband was Joseph Alinger (later changed to Elinger/Elander/Ellander), and we think they were married in 1811 in Warren County, Ohio. They moved possibly to Pennsylvania and had a family. Joseph Alinger died. Sarah remarried to a William Whitney (my ggg-grandfather) sometime before 1825. They had three children and lived in Louisiana. William died. Sarah remarried a third time to Willis Brown in Louisiana in 1840. It is only on this marriage license that she names her parents. There are no other clues as to Sarah's kin. Everyone has been stumped for some time. AND I AM DETERMINED TO FIND OUT ABOUT HER!!!!!! Please, please, please help if you can. Thanks, Patty Whitney Gravois in Louisiana.

    3. If you are wondering if this list is working....all I can say is if you see this, it is working. If you don't see this, then there is a list of infinite possible reasons why not ? ! Here is what I am working on...any help out there ? James M. (Milburn, Milton) Compton, subject of ancestral search, married Nancy Poole in 1833, both born 1810, first enumerated on Laurens Co., SC 1840 census in Scuffletown (Ora) Township. Nancy was the daughter of William Poole and Elizabeth Terry also of Laurens County. Their issue, all born in or around Laurens County are as follows: Andrew Poindexter b. 1834 d. 1834 in Laurens Co., SC Robert James(CSA) b. 1837 d. 1883 in Laurens Co., SC Thomas Henry (CSA) b. 1838 d. 1862 Winder Hospital, Richmond Cornelia E. (Templeton) b. 1842 d. 1922 in Ashville, NC William Berry(CSA) b. 1846 d. 1913 in Greenwood, SC Eliza Jane (Goodwin) b. 1849 d. 1933 in Bingen, AR Marcus Milton b. 1852 d. 1923 in DeQueen, AR Charles Orr b. 1854 d. 1932 in Binger, OK This family is continuously enumerated in the Laurens censuses of 1840 through 1880 as a farmer, not owning slaves. James's land dealings were apparently small and confined within his family as there is no record of rapid or large land sales or purchases. Thomas Henry died of war related problems in 1862, Richmond, VA. Cornelia married W. C. Templeton about 1869 and moved to Ashville, NC. William Berry married Alice O'Neal Day in 1873 and moved to Greenwood Co., SC. Robert James died in 1883. James's youngest sons, Charles Orr and Marcus Milton, moved to Hempstead Co., Arkansas, between 1886 and 1889. (Perhaps to join some cousins already established there). In 1889, William Whiteford Goodwin (Eliza Jane's husband) died, then Nancy died one month later in 1890. After these events, James, Eliza Jane and her seven children moved to Arkansas to join Charles Orr and Marcus Milton. James died in Arkansas in 1896.
