John S. Ledford was sheriff of Craig, Moffet Co., CO. in 1912 and newspapaer accounts have him as responsible for 'temporarily' detaining a part of the "Hole in the Wall Gang" of that particular time. His wife was Ella. He apparently married again after Ella's passing since he is listed in 1930 with ("Anthea??) He is 68 and she is 66. He was also a forest ranger. Have found his cemetery record as 1860-1937 at Fairview Cem in Craig. Census record has him born in Georgia with both parents born in North Carolina. Another source has him as b & d 1869-1937. The latter dates of birth and death match with a John Ledford I'm searching for. My particular John is the son of James E. Ledford and Matilda Brown. This couple along with others left Polk Co., TN (extreme SE portion of the state that adjoins both NC and GA). James and Matilda resided in Leadville, CO in the 1880's. In the late 1880's he is widowed from Matilda and remarried to Belle Carey/Erwin/Moore/Ledford. John is born in the late 1860's and siblings are Benjamin Franklin & Myra. Belle has dtr., Maude Moore. John, Ben and Myra all born in Fannin Co., GA. Ben and Myra go to Santa Barbara Co., CA. In 1928 when James Ledford dies his obit states that his son John is living in Colorado. The 1920 & 1930 census shows one other John Ledford which definately is not the one I'm looking for. Is there a resource for any genealogical data on Sheriff Ledford? I've searched the Moffet genweb with no luck except for the cem. records. I could use an obit. Anyone researching this group?
