GRANDMA'S DISEASE Author unknown courtesy Connie Washburn There's been a change in Grandma, we've noticed her of late. She always reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracking back the family, we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby - she's climbing the FAMILY TREE. Poor Grandpa does the cooking, and now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered, she busy as a bee, Compiling genealogy for the FAMILY TREE. She has no time to babysit, the curtains are a fright, No buttons left on Grandpa's shirt, the flower bed's a sight. She's given up her club work and the soaps on TV, the only thing she does nowadays is climb the FAMILY TREE. She goes down to the courthouse and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before. The books are old and dusty, they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when you're climbing the FAMILY TREE. The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the D.A.R. A monumental project all do agree, All from climbing up the FAMILY TREE. Now some folks came from Scotland, some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German all the way. Some went West to stake there claims, some stayed there by the sea. Grandma hopes to find them all, as she climbs the FAMILY TREE. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date and name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze, That blows above the Fathers of all our FAMILY TREES. There are pioneers and patriots, mixed in our kith and kin, Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, who eyes light up with glee, Each time she finds a missing branch for the FAMILY TREE. Their skills were wide and varied, from carpenter to cook, And one, alas, the records show, was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge - some tutored for a fee. Once lost in time, now all recorded on the FAMILIY TREE. To some it's just a hobby, to Grandma it's much more, She learns the joys and heartaches of those that went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept - and now, for you and me, They live again in spirit, around the FAMILY TREE. At last she's nearly finished and we are each exposed, Life will be the same again, this we all supposed. Grandma will cook and sew, serve cookies with our tea. We'll all be fat, just as before the wretched FAMILY TREE. Sad to relate, the preacher called and visited for a spell. We talked about the Gospel, and other things as well. The heathen folk, the poor and then - twas fate, it had to be, Somehow the conversation turned to Grandma and the FAMILY TREE. He never knew his Grandpa, his mother's name was..... Clark? He and Grandma talked and talked, outside it grew dark. We'd hoped our fears were groundless, but just like some disease, Grandma's become an addict - she's hooked on FAMILY TREES. Our souls are filled with sorrow, our hearts sad with dismay. Our ears could scarce believe the words we heard our Grandma say, "It sure is a lucky thing that you have come to me, I know exactly how it's done, I'll climb your FAMILY TREE.

Hi, I'm looking for any information on Elbert N Case and his wife Ida Beth. He was a real estate agent in Grand Junction in 1900(per census) and was still there as late as 1911 (city directory). By 1920, he was gone. They had no children that I know of. I'd appreciate any information anyone might have on him. (He was born in Iowa in Jan,1861). His brother Burton and family also lived there in 1900(census), but they left and went to California. Apparently, E N didn't go with them. Just got in the mail this morning email talking aboout this problem it gave the url http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/happy99.worm.html for instruction on how to get rid of this virus. Thank you for thoughts on locating my Samuel Johnson. Will try the CW. I think he and his son both served at the same time. The trouble with locating records from the govt. is they want you to tell them everything you don't know to find out what you don't know. Good luck with the worm L Grantham granth@futureone.com
I appreciate the suggestion that I get newspaper article pertaining to Samuels death. Perhaps I should explain why I've not gone the newpaper route to find my Johnson. The letter quoting 1895 was written 60 years after the event. The thought comes to mind: Why was that man reading a Cincinnatti paper. He's not from Cinn. nor is his wife. He is 150 miles from Cinn. but he is 70 miles from Columbus. To search the 112 rolls of film for 1894-95-96 for both cities would take about the same amount of hours. (I'm a fast reader). These are interlibrary loan rolls. At $12.00 per hour for someone to take care of my husband , $3.00 per roll even if found the right roll in the first 25 rolls Its a "no way Jose". Ohio Historical Soc will not do newspaper research. I appreciate the suggestion tho. I was really hoping that someone could tell me if the various counties have books of death records. Should have asked that question. Please consider it asked. I thought as this man may have had a family in Colo: Perhaps someone would recognize their ancestor. I want to thank all of you for reading my query. And for the replies I've gotten. Especially those who took the time to check materials that they owned to find my evasive grandparent. Hi Ken and rest of the list, Now that I have read your letter, it has gotten me to thinking.....and wondering if anyone else has ordered the Handibook for Genealogists? I ordered it way back in August. I have called them numerous times with them telling me it "hasn't gone to printing yet" or should be "ready by the end of the month or a certain month". I just called them in December, and the receptionists or whomever answered the phone said she hoped they would have it done by Feburary, or she didn't even want to have to answer the phone. I called them back in February, and they said the end of the month again. I really don't want my money back, I just want the book. Has anyone else been dealing with this? Thank you! Carol
I am posting this to warn others about problems with ; Census Microfilm Expeditors 476 E. South Temple , Suite 4 Salt Lake City , UT 84111 website ; www.censusmicrofilm.com e-mail ; gme@nwinfo.net and ; sj@censusmicrofilm.com I was lured to order several microfilm copies from this company with "guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" . My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". Thank you , Kenneth Sartin researching ; Sartin , Sartain , Sarton , Sarten , Sardin etc. etc.
Hi everyone, If you haven't checked out this site, you may want to - it's a wonderful idea! http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnraogk/index.htm Carol
Am resending this because I'd forgotten that it was necessary to subscribe to these mailing lists. And I've now subscribed. Looking for a Johnson needle in the Colorado haystack. Samuel (also used Abraham) Johnson was born c 1823 in Ohio. He mar. 1849 Sarah NEWELL, had one son ASA, div. in 1851, mar Virginia HALL in 1851. About 1879 he left her and their two daughters and went to Colo. According to a granddau c 1895 a article was in Cinncinnatti paper asking for the whereabouts of ASA and his two sisters, Rosa/Rosannah, mar CONLEY, Lucy mar?YATES or ?BURNFIELD. This was in regards to an estate in Colo. No one knows where the estate was nor Samuels exact death date. So far as is known the children never looked into matter. The two daus. may not seen a Cinncinnatti paper. I think one had moved to WV by that time. ASA had his own troubles. It is not known whether there was a third mar. in Colo. Can anyone give me suggestions as to where to look? Is there a unclaimed estate dept. in Colo? Any help will be most appreciated. L Grantham grantha@futureone.com All I want is when and where did Samuel die? Did he have a third family? A divorce record was never found for Virginia (HALL) JOHNSON but she did remar. As did his first wife. Thank you all for your patience

Good afternoon, I am absolutely amazed at these photo's. I have just completed the task of adding 12 new photo's which adds a total of " 36 " pages to the photo's project located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cophotos/index.htm I would like to thank John Weihing, Rod Reinhardt, Mary Thompson Saban & Sue Gann-Splady who have contributed photo's to our project and am very happy to be a part of this project. We added three more counties to our list now. This is great. My goal is to have all counties listed with photo's. The new counties are Adams, Arapahoe and Boulder. If any of you viewers have Old photo's of Colorado i.e. First Businesses, early settlers, farms, schools, etc., and would like to share them with the Colorado USGenWeb Photo's project, please contact me, and your more than welcome to view all the new photo's listed at the url I have listed above. Sorry for the intrusion, this was the only way I could think of to reach as many people as possible to help. Our class is having their 30 year reunion this year. Because it's for West Anchorage High, Anchorage, Alaska, most of the class were "temporary" residents of Alaska. We are having a lot of trouble finding classmates for the 1969 graduating class. http://www.geocities.com/~alaskanrick/westreunion69_page1.html If you know of anyone who may have been from this class, please direct them to this site. It has come to my attention that the building they are going to tear down may be the City Hall, not the Courthouse. Could be. Wouldn't be the first time I was wrong. Wouldn't even be the first time today! <g> MF

It has been suggested by those that maintain the CO web sites, that we try to put a picture of each county courthouse on the CO Photo page. Because I live Ohio, I can't take these pictures. Would anyone like to donate a nice, clear snapshot of the courthouses in any of these counties? Dolores, Mesa, San Miguel or Dolores? Also, if there are any picturesque sites within these counties, we could use those pictures also. You can either send me a scanned image or the photo itself, as I have a scanner.
