The Sterling Journal Advocate has back issues - I do not know how far back but I have looked at issues from the 1930's about 15 to 20 years ago. They had them in regualr newsprint not indexed or on microfilm. Perhaps their office could assist you, if you knew an approximate date. Their were several railroad lines through Sterling. The Union Pacific line from the Northeast to Denver. BurlingtonRoute operated the line which ran from the North to Denver, the Cheyenne line which ran from Sterling to Cheyenne Wyoming, and the Highline which ran from Sterling to the east. I do not know when these lines began operation but they all appear in my 1907 Atlas. The Burlington route is also the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy.
