Thank you so much for the cemetery info, picture of the building, and all the info you sent us. I was hoping you were a Harris researcher and we could share what information we have found on William H Harris, his siblings and parents. We have been unable to go back any farther than William H. Harris' parents John and Alice Harris who were born in VA. about 1784 and were living in Holt Co, Mo in 1850. We find no connection at this time to the other Harris family buried in the same cemetery. Thank you so very much for your help. Sincerely, Lillian

I was just bored and thought I would see if I could help. I stopped by the cemetery this afternoon. The William Crane Harris headstone is so large that they must have removed the W H Harris, etc headstones. I wasn't able to get any dates on those buried there that only listed initials. Sorry. You can request death certificates from the State of Colorado, though. Are you related to the other Harris's buried there? Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help. Best regards, Carol

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZY.2ADI/372.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I had a couple of minutes today, and went to the cemetery. Like an idiot, I didn't take my notes, so I walked past W H Harris and family, directly to W C Harris. Duh! So....I will go back again, now that I know where they are. What I did find was the history of one of our buildings in town. The following is what I found: I&M Building In 1920, prominent cattleman W.C. Harris started the construction of this 20th Century Commericial style building with Georgian influences at the corner of South 3rd and Main Streets. The building was designed by architect Eugene Groves and maintains much of its original condition. The Harvard educated Groves came to Colorado in 1914 for health reasons after practicing architecture in both New York and Indiana. He is best known for his innovative and futuristic use of poured, cast and reinforced concrete. The I & M Building is an excellent example of his creativity with concrete. On the Main Street facade are two cast surrounds, one around an arched window, the other the arched doorway. What makes these features unique is the "freeze" like way in which they were cast and the theme that appears on them. Around the doorway appear the original settlers of the plains, a profile of a Native American and a buffalo. Under the Native American motif is a peace pipe, hatchet and arrowhead. On the window surround the new residents of the plains are represented; a profile of a steer representing the cattle ranchers and wheat representing the farmers that have settled Sterling and the plains. The second story windows have cast concrete balustrades. The Main Street ! facade has a decorative brick patter with a diamond pattern below brick corbelling along the cornice. The Third Street Facade is somewhat simpler in detail. Concrete pilasters on the first floor divide two part plate glass windows with poured concrete kick plates under the windows. The main entrance retains the original cast iron awning. The entrance is recessed with bronze doors. The second story windows are covered with awnings and have concrete sills. The cornice is corbelled brick in a dentil patter with a concrete cap along the top and round concrete medallions. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The interior of the building features ornamental cast plaster ceilings and frieze moldings. The interior still has the original marble floor. The front has decorative carvings and balusters. While still under construction, it was purchased by George Henderson. He named it the I & M Building for his daughters, Isabel and Mildred. The Henderson Company is still in operation. I have attached a photo of the building. Also, Maxine Belle is buried with William and Sarah. She was the "Infant daughter of William and Sarah.
