However, his tombstone and cemetery records (Chanceford U.P. Church cemetery outside Airville, Pennsylvania) and his final land disposition deed in York County, Pennsylvania (before his son William moved to Ohio) indicate him as William. (this information taken from the Genealogical table of the House of Samuel Collins, compiled by Eleanor Edith Collins Cleland 1936 - --) was a weaver by trade and came to this country from Scotland or from the North of Ireland about the year 1760 and settled in the lower part of York County, Pennsylvania. In witness where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written her Signed sealed and Grace Collins declared in the presence Mark of us---------- WM. Callagher James Dumbar - perhaps married 1752 in Scotland - or Ireland. She was probably the daughter of David Hamilton (1715-1801) who, with his family, came to York County several years before the Collins family came. (note that this doesn't match the story read at the 1870 picnic which said that she and 3 existing children followed him from Ireland) Six children: Samuel, John, William, Betty, Isabella, and Anne. > > SAMUEL COLLINS, son of above, b. cir 1753, possibly in Scotland or Ireland, > died 1825 in York County, PA; married to AGNES THOMPSON; was Drummer/Fifer > in 8th Battalion, PA Militia, 3rd Company; Continental Line, 3rd PA II. Samuel Collins 1 (William 1) (first child of William (Samuel) Collins 1718 and Grace Hamilton) - supposedly, he was one of the three children brought from Ireland - or Scotland. An internet source shows his birth date as 1753 in York County, Pennsylvania - another internet source shows him as having been born in Scotland. An internet source shows his death as 18 April 1825 in Pennsylvania. According to an internet source, he "served in the Revolutionary War as an ensign, 8th Battalion, Pennsylvania Militia, 3rd Company in 1778. He was fifer in 1779-1781, Lieutenant in 1783. He was also "precentor of the Queenstown, now Guinston United Presbyterian Church, and it was his duty to give out all notices such as are now given by the minister." His wife (deed info. below suggests her name may have been Agnes - and an internet source identifies her as Agnes Thompson - and advises that they married 30 Oct 1787) (an internet source advises she was born in 1764 and died in 1811) was afflicted with a cancer from which she died, though it has been removed. Part of the family removed to New York State and from thence to Ohio. The families of Archibald and Margaret (Mrs. Steward) are mostly in Greene County; the widow of John, with one son and daughter, (Mrs. Hugh McHatton) settled in Illinois. Of William, the writer cannot speak. There are now living children two, grandchildren fourteen, great grandchildren eight. We read that Jabez was more honorable than his brother, so as to this and especially as to Archibald as being the Levitical family there being three sons, two sons-in-law and two grandchildren all actively engaged in the Master's vineyard with the exception of Dr. J.B. Clark, now deceased. See picnic report (above) for information on his family. Hello Collins cousins. My name is Rose Collins Lowther, and read the Collins list posts via my Mom's computer. I am project coordinator for the Collins DNA Study which will be comparing the family tree and DNA (from direct male) Collins descendants. This study will help confirm research, or to eliminate false trails and will identify a most recent common ancestor between participants. The "Y-Chromosome (26-STR) DNA Test" through Genetree.com costs $225 (which is well worth the price in my opinion). Check with male Collins descendants and see if you can swab his inner cheek in order to solve this genealogical Collins jigsaw puzzle. Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions.
Rose Collins Lowther, I'm writing to inquire about the Collins DNA project. We have located a direct male descendant of our Collins line and would be interested in learning more about the project. I looked at www.genetree.com and didn't manage to find anything specifically about the Collins DNA project. Is there a public website for the project that shows the basic Collins lines represented in the study? How many participants are part of the study? We are also interested in coordinating with the private Melungeon DNA project that is hosted by www.familytreedna.com . Family Tree DNA does not yet have a Collins surname DNA project, although one could easily be started if needed. Our earliest known Collins ancestor is Rev. James Shepard Collins b. 1780's supposedly Grayson Co Va, moved to Letcher Co Ky about 1802 where he died 1869 and is buried there in the Colson Ky cemetery with his wife Elizabeth Lewis. I don't have reason to believe our James is related to the Vardy Collins family, but there are family stories from Letcher Co folks that need to be looked into.
