There are a number of Collins families that appear to have been 'called' Melungeon at one time or another. DNA has shown most of them appear to be unrelated as far as Collins but possibly belonging to same Native Tribes at one point. There is no proof that I have found to date that shows any of these Collins families 'mated' with slaves, were freed, runaway, etc. One line appears to descend from the line out of Louisa Co., Va., to Orange Co., Wilkes, Rowan, NC and then to East Tennessee. Another line which may be considered Melungeon are the Thomas and George found in the 1794 petition in Georgetown, or Marion Co., SC. They may be the same Collins family found in Wilson Co., or Bells Bend, Tenn. Another line appears to be Benjamin Collins, unrelated to the Virginia Collins line that also appears in East Tennessee. I guess the Collins line I'm specifically talking about would be the line extending from David Collins-Aaron(1773)-Harmon(1807)-etc. I know currently many of my Collins family live throughout south eastern Missouri and north eastern Arkansas. From speaking with my father there are also Collins relations throughout other parts of Missouri and even Indiana. Though it is still somewhat up in the air where my great great grandfather Jacob Collins came from, it is believed that Harmon Collins may have been his father. Also there are relations between the Bulls(became Turnbulls), Nasalrods and Dentons. I appreciate any direction in this because with alot of the stuff I am reading on the internet it becomes confusing as to who was(is) and who wasn't(isn't).
