On the Monroe County USGenWeb site, there is a transcription of intruders on Cherokee lands. Evidently the names early on the list may have been there as early as 1798. Early on the list is a John Collins. I'm looking into the possibility that this John Collins might have been the father of Green Berry (or Greenberry) Collins, born in Tennessee of North Carolina parents abt 1822.
