It was first known as COLLINS Twp and the present name was given about 1826. The west line between Monroe and Wood Twps was established as early as 1816, but not under the name of Monroe. It contains the village of Henryville with about 400 inhabitants. It was in this township, before the formation of Scott County in 1820, that on Sep 3, 1812 the Pigeon Roost Massacre took place. The first victims were a Mr. PAINE and a Mr. COFFMAN who were about three miles from the settlement and unarmed. COFFMAN lived in Kentucky and was on a visit to Paine. Next was the wife of young HENRY COLLINS, who had been visiting a neighbor living near the present site of Vienna. She was killed while returning home. The family of Mr. PAINE was killed, their bodies dragged into their house, which was burned. RICHARD COLLINS' family consisting of his wife and seven children were brutally murdered, and Mr. COLLINS was absent from home at the time. He belonged to a company of rangers and was then at Vincennes. At the same time the family of JOHN MORRIS composed of his wife and three children were killed. Mr. Morris was also away from his home. He had been drafted on the call of Gov. HARRISON for service on the Wabash and was at that time at Jeffersonville. In all 3 men, 4 women and 14 children were killed.
