    3. 1870 census Texas County, MO has Jacob, age 21, and Mary, age 24, living next door to Elizabeth Collins age 60 and son Isaah age 20...... No husband... may have been killed in the Civil War....There is also a Henry on the same page...Could be an older son of Elizabeth....This family is from Kentucky....Will be happy to help with research in a couple of weeks if you still need help. I am on what seems tio be a very difficult quest. I am searching for nformation on where my great great grandfather Jacob Collins b. 1846-1853 inona, Shannon Co., Missouri came from lineage wise. I know that he was married o a Mary Collins and later married a Rachel Duty. My great grandfather was rancis Marion Collins. I have a bunch of information gathered from various sources and one is a andwritten note that says that he was the brother of Isaiah Collins(son of armon) and can thus can be traced back to David Collins 1750. However, I do not ee any brothers of Isaiah with the name of Jacob. This leads me to the onclusion that Jacob is not the first name and may instead be his middle name. Also, would Harmon Collins and previous Collins of that line be considered Melungeon"? As a kid my father always thought we were Irish. Thansk for any elp! 2. Sure thing. It has been a difficult road for sure. Most of my Collins relatives live currently in Birch Tree, Missouri and surrounding parts. I tried going through the various census. Here is a bit more information accodring to my grandmother's notes. He lived with his son in Arkansas up until his death in 1925. My grandmother says that her husband (Jacob Calvin Collins) says that he lived with his son Francis Marion Collins until his death, but others have said that he lived with his son Aaron. Through his first marriage to Mary Collins he had America Collins, William Collins and Vandalia Collins(my grandmother also mentioned an Arizona Collins though I'm not sure if she died young or if she may actually have been Vandalia, sometimes spelled Vandaly). His second marriage to Rachel Duty he had Francis Marion, Ellen Beauty, Aaron and Sarah Jane. He married Rachel Duty after her first husband, Madison "Matt" Jones died. It may also be important to note that in 1918 many of this line of Collins was in the Pocahontas, Arkansas area...during the Spanish Influenza Epidemic. My great grandmother, Ida Elvina(sometimes listed Melvina)Jones and her daughter Dorothy Collins passed away in 1918 because of this. Sorry to ramble on and thanks for any help. ---- Jackie Foster <jandbill@aol.com> wrote: > > 1870 census Texas County, MO has Jacob, age 21, and Mary, age 24, living next door to Elizabeth Collins age 60 and son Isaah age 20...... 2. I was thinking a bit more about your response post. I believe that Mary was the daughter of Aaron "Arn" Collins and Elizabeth. I am thinking, though I have no proof, that Jacob may have been the son of Harmon Collins. This would make his first wife, Mary, his cousin. It is all just assumption though on my part as I still believe that Jacob had gone by a different first name. I have been looking through various census throughout Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky for an unaccounted for Collins but cannot seem to find one. The only other conclusion I can come up with besides the fact that he may have been unaccounted for somehow is that he was adopted. The census he shows up in Texas County, MO it shows his mother and father's birthplace as Indiana. Other census from Missouri it shows his parents as being born in Missouri. My great great grandfather is definitely a tough little monster to figure out. ---- Jackie Foster <jandbill@aol.com> wrote: > > 1870 census Texas County, MO has Jacob, age 21, and Mary, age 24, living next door to Elizabeth Collins age 60 and son Isaah age 20...... 2. Roger Collins
    3. Hi, This is not my Collins line, but I thought I would take a look. Starting with the 1900 census Jacob is head of household living with his son Marion in Shannon County, Missouri. He gives his birth as Oct. 1853 (but earlier census records list him as born in the 1840s). He is divorced. His children with him are unmarried. 1900 Census: Missouri, Shannon County, Winona Township Collins, Jacob (Oct 1853, age 46) Mo Ind Ind ----Marion (son) (March 1878, age 22) Ark Mo Ark ----Aaron (son) (Nov. 1880, age 19) Ark Mo Ark ----Ellen (dgtr) (May 1882, age 17) Ark Mo Ark ----Sarah (dgtr) (April 1885, age 15) Ark Mo Ark I found online the death certificate for Francis Marion Collins (born March 31, 1879, Arkansas; died Dec. 26, 1938, Birch Tree, Shannon County, Missouri). It states that his father was Jacob Collins. Missouri Digital Heritage can be found at: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/ =============== Following that lead, I looked in the 1880 census for Arkansas and found Francis Marion in the household of Jacob and Rachel Collins in Fulton County, Arkansas: 1880 Census: Arkansas, Fulton County, Myatt Township Coolins, John 40 Mo Ind Ind Rudah 29 Mo Mo Ind Alexander 14 Ark Mo Mo Martha B. 7 ditto Mary Ann 4 Joseph 2 Rose 7mo Henson, Milly (sister) 37 Mo -- Ind Dwelling 63 Collins, Joseph 22 Mo Ill -- laborer Melissia 18 Mo -- -- Dwelling 64 Collins, Jacob 34 Ind Ind Ind Farmer (Born ca. 1846) Rachal 34 Ark Mo Ind James W. 13 Ark Mo Ind Eliza J. 11 Ark Mo Ind Malindia 9 Ark Mo Ind Nancy J. 6 Ark Mo Ind Francis M. 2 Ark Mo Ind ============== I found an Arkansas marriage index that states that Jacob Collins and Mrs. Rachel Jones were married May 12, 1877, in Lawrence County, Arkansas. So it would appear that Rachel would be Francis Marion's mother. I also find in that marriage index where Rachel Duty married Mathew Jones on Dec. 26, 1866, in Lawrence County, Arkansas. The children (James W., Eliza J., Malindia, and Nancy J. could possibly be her children from the Jones marriage. It would not seem that they could be Jacob's children from his marriage to Mary, because those children are found in the 1880 census for Douglas County, Missouri, in the household of "Polly" Collins: 1880 Census: Missouri, Douglas County, Richland Township (ED # 30) Collins, Polly (age 35) Missouri / Indiana / Indiana ----William (age 14) Mo Mo Mo ----Vandalia (age 10) Mo Mo Mo ----Amerian E. (age 8) Mo Mo Mo NOTE: Is "Polly" Jacob's first wife Mary? Here "Polly" is listed as "widowed" (If she were divorced, the census taker would write a "D" in the designated column.) ============ Tracking back to the 1870 census, we find Jacob and Mary Collins in Texas County, Missouri: 1870 Census: Missouri, Texas County, Wood and Richland (PO: Houston) Dwelling 77 Collins, Jacob 21 Mo (Born ca. 1849) Mary 24 Mo William 4 Mo Vandaly 2mo Mo ================ This is the earliest entry I can find for "Jacob Collins." But going back to the 1880 census in Arkansas, he is living near a John Collins (written as "Coolins"). There we have the following: John Collins (b. ca. 1840 Mo/Ind/Ind) Millie Collins Henson (his sister) (b. ca. 1843, Mo/--/Ind) Joseph Collins (b. ca. 1858 Mo / Ill / --- and Jacob Collins (b. ca. 1846 Ind / Ind / Ind) Going back to the 1850 census to look for these people, we finally zero in on the household of Aaron Collins in Ozark County, Missouri. (Incidentally, there are a total of three Aaron Collinses on the same census page. 1850 Census: Missouri, Ozark County Collins, Aaron (age 39, Kentucky) ----Ann (age 37, Ky) ----Mary (age 17, Ind) ----Rachel (age 15, Ind) ----Mahala (age 13, Mo) ----Luanda (age 11, Mo) ----JOHN (age 9, Mo) ----MILLEY (age 7, Mo) ----JAERNIGAN (age 5, Mo) ----Timothy (age 1, Mo) One possibility is that "Jaernigan" is Jacob. (Jaernigan (Jarnigan) is a surname, but it would be used as a given name at times.) The John and Milley here would seem to be the same who turn up in Fulton County, Arkansas, in 1880. Also note, that while Aaron Collins states in the census he was born in Kentucky, his oldest children were born in Indiana. So it's possible (if Aaron were his father) that in later years Jacob could think his parents came from Indiana. ================= Following Aaron's household to the 1860 census, they have now moved to Douglas County, Missouri. The "JOSEPH" in dwelling 354 could be the Joseph in Fulton County, Arkansas in 1880. And in dwelling 359 we find John, Milly, and JUNIGAN. 1860 Census: Missouri, Douglas County Dwelling 354 Collins, Aron 27 Ind Louiza J. 35 Ky Elizabeth 5 Mo JOSEPH 2 Mo Stephen 1mo Mo Dwelling 355 Collins, Stephen 55 Ky Mary 60 Ky David 25 Ind Stephen 21 Mo Henry 16 -- Dwelling 356 Collins, James 32 Ind Sealy 24 Ind Rebeca A. 5 Mo Nancy 2 Mo Dwelling 357 Collins, Samuel 30 Ind Anna 21 Ind Nancy A. 3 Mo Polly J. 1mo Mo Dwelling 359 Collins, ARON 52 Ky Anna 48 Ky Rachel 25 Ind Mahala 23 Mo Lucinda 21 Mo JOHN 19 Mo MILLY 17 Mo JUNIGAN 15 Mo (male) Timothy 13 Mo Benjamin 10 Mo Morgans 7 Mo Enly 6 Mo (male) Malesa 4 Mo Stephen 2 Mo Barnetta 1mo Mo (female) ================ Moving on to 1870 census, Aaron's household is now in Lawrence County, Arkansas. 1870 Census: Arkansas, Lawrence County, Campbell Collins, Arey 62 Ky Anna 50 Ky Timothy 22 Mo Benjamin 19 Mo Morgan 17 Mo Rachel 30 Ind Lucinda 24 Mo MILLIE 24 Mo John Collins and wife Rhoda are on Duty Township, Lawrence County, Arkansas. Jarnigan ("Jaernigan") Collins can not be found. Jarnigan can not be found after 1860, Jacob can not be found before 1870. And in 1870, Jacob Collins is in Texas County, Missouri, with wife Mary. =============== Hope this helps, or at least gives a good lead. 3. I've been meaning to write but we have been moving to a new home and not much extra time. I was so glad to see Roger wrote to you. He is a fantastic Collins researcher. In fact, he reallly started the ball rolling for dna studies. I believe he still uses Ancestry.com dna which was first Relative finder and then Ancestry bought them as I understand. We have our line on both Ancestry and Familytreedna. Familytreedna is where the Melungeon study started. Hope you are having some more luck with tracing Jacob. I want to give you info on Morgan Co. IN. I need to look at some notes I have but basically many of the men moved there from Knox Co. KY. I'm probably repeating myself! Hopefully, I can send you more tomorrow.
