Please excuse cross postings. Hi all, I'm new to the list. I've been slowly working on the history of my father's side of the family for almost 2 years now. I've come to a stuck point and hope that someone out there can help me out. I have very little information on the Collins branch of the family: my grandmother was Ella Charlotte Collins McGough born in Detroit, MI in 1891 her parents were Timothy Collins born in Detroit, MI 1858 and Anna Furlong Collins born in Detroit, MI 1861 Tim's parents were Richard Collins born in Ireland about 1816 and Ellen Culhane (I think) Collins born in Ireland about 1836 This is where I run into the problem ... Richard Collins became a citizen in 1856 indicating he arrived in the US no later than 1849 -- however, his naturalization papers have no other information -- no county where he came from in Ireland, no date of arrival in the US -- And to make matters worse his death certificate is apparently not filled out correctly it lists his parents as Richard and Ellen Collins (which seems to actually be his name and his wife's name). I did recently narrow down the possible churches they may have attended to just a couple. I will hopefully be able to go over the church records next time I'm in Detroit, around Christmas time. I already have the applicable census images, I know where they are burried, and I have addresses from the Detroit city directories. The other bit of information I have is that Timothy Collins owned T & R Collins Trucking (with his brother Richard) I know that it was in operation from (at least) before 1905 till 1929. My requests: If anyone is also researching this family I'd love to share information. And I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to find out the names of Richard & Ellen's parents, where they came from in Ireland, etc... Generally where do I go from here? Thanks in advance for any information and suggestions you can give me. -Liz McGough
Hello, I am new and am curious if anyone knows of a Elizabeth Collins who married John Henry Cowden (aka Henry Cowden). They lived in Athens, TN late 1800s and had sons John, Samuel, James and Guy. They also had two daughters Effie and I do not know the name of the other one. Sandra Larson SANDRA LARSON What lies before us and what lies behind us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us..
Dear List, It has been a while since I have posted anything and altho I have found nothing new I thought there might be a few new Collins out there to touch upon. My name is Brenda Collins Dillon. I have been on the list, I think, since it began and have been doing family history for over 30 years. In the past year I have slowed way down due to health issues but, folks I ain't dead yet..... My line goes back to Meredith Collins born 1760 in Virginia. The earliest record I have on him is when he entered Captain James McDaniel's Fincastle County militia in 1776 at the age of 16 years. He entered that same day and same district as did George Collins, David Collins and Lewis Collins, probably related to him but I still don't know just how. The records of this was found in the courthouse archives of Christianburg, Virginia. QUESTION: Could the above David Collins be the same as David 1750? Meredith was involved in three relationships but I have never found a legal marriage. This could have been due to him being listed in 1810 as mullato and 1820 as fpc. In early Colonial Virginia there was laws against mixed bloods being married. Though these three relationships Meredith fathered several sons and two unnamed daughters. ( Bradley,John W., Edward, Archibald, James, Reuben, William, and levi) In the past year I have recieved emails from a distant cousin that lives in Oregon that connects through the William Collins line and another through the Archibald Collins line. I would love to hear from others. Brenda Collins Dillon [email protected]

I have heard you can send images to the list but I havent tried, nor have I seen any that others have sent...If I had more brains I would ask rootsweb to let me make a website for "Can ANYONE Identify this Heirloom???" because I have a lot of friends and family with odd things that no one can identify, but no one can get rid of , either.... and I just bet there are other people out there who are in the same situation.... Any web designers out there who can afford the time to do it???? it would probably take alot of server space, but maybe the photos could be thumbnailed or something... Any ideas? gloria

Good morning to the ELLZEY, POWELL, BARNES, KNIGHT, COLLINS, LEWIS, ROBERTS, CHEAVES, CHEVIS, Mississippi county JONES and SC Edgefield and Orangeburgh lists, and North Carolina county of Duplin lists, To begin: Please, if you notice errors needing corrections and/or have anything to add to this information, please contact me through the lists shown and/or directly. (New connections, (for me anyway,) between ELLZEY family of Evan ELLZEY and Mary COLLINS? and the POWELL family out of 1700s Duplin Co., NC and Edgefield Co., SC into Twiggs Co., Early Co., and Crawford Co., Georgia that married into the ELLZEY family as well as possibilities of connecting with my POWELL line out of Virginia and Georgia that married into my GRESHAM/GRISHAM family that married my HATTEN/HATTON that married JONES that descends from McCARTY out of Edgefield Co., SC. (The POWELL information that is new to me that connects with the ELLZEY family is shown further below in this email and was originally from Sam POWELL and posted by GenWeb Archives.) Re: Evan ELLZEY, b: Abt. 1786 in SC/poss. Orangeburgh District/County/later Winton/Barnwell Co. where the MYRICKs were also from, d: Bef. 1870 prob. in Ellisville, Jones Co., MS, & wife, Mary COLLINS?, and children: Harriet(t) ELLZEY, b: 1824 in SC or Jones Co., MS, md: John LEWIS, b: Abt. 1820 in Jones Co., MS, (s/o Nancy COPELAND and Howell LEWIS, of Granville Co., NC) and Re: the family of John Hathorn POWELL, b: 1760 in Duplin Co., NC, who married Esther ? and were the parents of (Rev.) Hiram POWELL, b: 1797 in Edgefield Co., SC, md: # 1: Pennia BARNES & # 2: Rebecca CHEAVES/CHEVIS. (Rev.) Hiram POWELL & 1st wife, Pennia BARNES, were the parents of Rigdon POWELL, born: 1806 in Georgia, md: Nancy ROBERTS, (parents: ??,) and their son, James Madison POWELL, born: Abt. 1829 in Crawford Co., GA, md: Cynthia ELLZEY, d/o Evan ELLZEY and Mary COLLINS?, also parents of Harriet(t) ELLZEY who married John LEWIS, son of Nancy COPELAND and Howell LEWIS, with my descent being from Harriet(t) ELLZEY and John LEWIS. (There was more than one branch of this POWELL family in Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi where my ELLZEY family was with both families coming out of South Carolina....the POWELLs were in Edgefield Dist./Co., SC.) Hello. My name is Bellinda MYRICK-BARNETT and I wanted to write regarding the new connections that I have found for the ELLZEY family with the POWELL family and others connecting here. While re-reading a letter from Carol ELSEY back on May 10, 2001, I noticed that Evan ELLZEY and Mary COLLINS?' daughter, Cynthia ELLZEY, had married James Madison POWELL, son of Rigdon POWELL and Nancy ROBERTS of Crawford County, Georgia, and that Rigdon POWELL's brother, Hiram POWELL, was born in Edgefield Dist./Co., SC so the names of MADISON, for the middle name of James Madison POWELL and the given name of Hiram for Hiram POWELL along with the surname of POWELL triggered possible connections in my mind. My paternal lineage is from the ELLZEY family in Jones Co., MS that married into my LEWIS-COPELAND-PARKER-JENNINGS-EARLE-HOLBROOK family group that married into my paternal MYRICK-PIERCE-HUNTER?/BOWLES?-HERRINGTON-GRANTHAM-STUCKEY-DICKENS family group that married into my HATTEN/HATTON-LOTT-LIGHTFOOT family group on several occasions including when my father, Billy Earl(e) "Bill" MYRICK, married my mother, Ethel LaVerne "LaVerne" SLAUGHTER, who was the daughgter of Louis Hector "Heck" SLAUGHTER and Mrs. Ethel Rosalie HATTEN WOMACK, (widow of Joseph Marion WOMACK,) who was the daughter of Cicero Lamkin HATTEN and Rodella "Della" JONES, d/o William Tunley JONES, (CSA,) and Martha Ann Caroline "Caroline" McCARTY. Martha Ann Caroline "Caroline" McCARTY was the daughter of Nancy SPRADLEY and Hiram McCARTY, born: July 23, 1811 in Edgefield District, SC, died: 1886 in Jasper Co., Mississippi, who was the son of Sarah WALKER and Alford/Alfred McCARTY of Edgefield District, SC. In addition, Cicero Lamkin HATTEN was the stepson of Zachariah Taylor "Zachary/Zack" FAITH, 2nd husband of Cicero's mother, Frances Ann GRISHAM, whose 1st husband was Lawrence M. HATTEN, (s/o William HATTEN, (1st coroner of Winn Parish, LA who later married 2nd wife, Anna "Annie" NETTLES,) and William's 1st wife, Frances Lucretia "Patsy" LOTT.) Frances Ann GRISHAM was the daughter of Elizabeth Ann FORD, (d/o Mary BUCKLES/BUCKHOLTS and Henry FORD of Natchez, Adams Co., MS and Franklin Co., MS,) and Jehu Madison GRISHAM/GRESHAM, born: 1815 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, died: 1861 in Jackson Parish, Louisiana. Just recently, I found out that Jehu Madison GRISHAM/GRESHAM was the son of Barnett GRESHAM, born: Abt. 1797 in King & Queen Co., Virginia, died: Abt. 1830 in Lowndes Co., Alabama, who married Lucy POWELL, born: Abt. 1790 in Virginia, died: Abt. 1818 prob. in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia, md: December 18, 1806 in Oglethorpe Co., Georgia. Lucy POWELL was the daughter of Mary HARDAWAY and Edward POWELL, Jr., born: August 03, 1755 in Virginia, prob. Albermarle Parish in Sussex County. There may not be any direct connection with this POWELL family but it is interesting that the given name of MADISON is present in this POWELL-GRESHAM/GRISHAM family group as well as the POWELL-ELLZEY family group as well as the connecting McCARTY family of Edgefield, SC and the given name of HIRAM along with the given name of HIRAM showing up in the POWELL family out of Edgefield, SC.....and looking to put together more of the pieces....somethings are more obscure but there other less obscure possibilities here. My ELLZEY descent is immediately below followed immediately by the information on the families of POWELL, John Hathorn, (Rev.) Hiram, and Rigdon, James Madison, etc.. Thank you. Sincerely, Bellinda Myrick-Barnett My ELLZEY descent is from: Evan ELLZEY & Mary COLLINS?, (as mentioned above) Harriet(t) ELLZEY & John LEWIS, (s/o Nancy COPELAND and Howell LEWIS, of Granville Co., NC) Rachael Moranda "Randa/Randy" LEWIS & 2nd?/3rd? husb: Spencer B. PARKER, (s/o Jeremiah "Jerry" PARKER & 2nd?/3rd? wife, Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS,) (Rachael Moranda "Randa/Randy" LEWIS said to have married under name of Moranda COLEMAN, (why?,) when she married two known husbands, John Wesley BRIGHT, and Spencer B. PARKER,) (And in earlier info Moranda's mother's name was shown in my immediate family as Karrie KNIGHT, (why?,) was this confusion with her mother, Harriet ELLZEY's 1st name of Harriet(t) with Karrie? and was the KNIGHT a confusion with BRIGHT, the name of the 1st?/2nd? husband of Rachael Moranda? or possibly something to do with the KNIGHT relations?) I do have a lost William Collins, but the age doesn't quite fit. This William Collins is the son of Stephen Dempsey Collins of Robeson County, NC. He was born about 1847/8. I am searching for my Collins Ancestors and wondered if there might be a connection to someone. At one time my brickwall was Samuel Houston Collins of Jackson Co. Alabama and still is to some degree. Samuel was born Abt. 1851 and died in 1921 in Morris Co. TX and is buried there as well. Samuel married Lucinda (Lou Endie) Culver, daughter of David Culver and Martha Isbell Culver. Until last year we had no idea who Samuel's parents were, although there are many Collins in Jackson Co. AL and it was most likely that he connected to these Collins, we weren't sure how. The Collins, Isbells, and Culvers all lived in close proximity of each other in Jackson Co. AL.. Samuel was said to have been of Native American descent but we can't prove that. We knew that Sam had a brother that went to Texas when he turned 18 and was never heard from again.....no name tho and we knew that Sam's father died and his mother remarried but again no name. On Sam's death certificate it listed his ! fathers name as Houston but this turned out to be wrong. After much searching a cousin of mine found a Hezekiah Collins born in NC 1830 in the 1860 Monroe Co. TN Census with wife Nancy (born in TN) and S.H. Collins (which my GGGrandfather was referred to alot of the time) right age for my Sam H. and brother William. We are reasonably certain that this is our Sam's family. The 1870 Jackson Co. Census finds Nancy Collins, Sam H. and William living there with Nancy Widowed. We have copies of Hezekiah's Service Records from the Civil War. He died October 30, 1864 in Richmond VA at Chimborazo Hospital. We haven't been able to find where he is buried though. We have recently found a Hezekiah Collins (right age) in 1850 Blount Co. TN Census with Azariah, Rebecca, Lav, Marg, James, and W.A. Collins. No parents listed but possibly brothers and sisters. Does any of this sound familiar to you? Thanks for your help! Tonda Thomas [email protected]
Anyone have a William F. Collins that they can't place? Born around 1855 NC. Will was married 3 times: Elizabeth, ?, & Rinda. Would like to exchange information with anyone that may have this William in their genealogy.
A short while ago I posted a search for NJ & PA Collins. Someone responded saying they were on vacation but would get back to me when they returned home. I lost this persons reply along with their email address. Would that person please contact me again? I sure appreciate it. Thank you Millie [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>
Looking for information on William Richison Collins born Virginia/West Virginia. Reported to have enlisted in the War of 1812 at Leesburg. Parents reported to be Horatio Collins and Abigail Richison. Sorry I have no date. He married Margaret Hutchinson and had following children order unknown: Elizabeth who married James Mace, Nancy b.1822 who married Robert P. Dilley, Mary E., William A., Margaret L., Enoch A (1834?) who was murdered in Mexico City Mo. 12-5-1889 at the age of 55 as per newspaper accounts, Julia who married Robert Emmet Smithson and was a teacher, Sallie who married a Parker and Abigail who married a Matthews. I believe most of there people were residents of Washington Co. Ohio for at least some of their lives. I know Nancy died in Lebo, Coffee County, Kansas but don't know if she is buried there. Hi List, Is anyone researching Jacob COLLINS, b. ca. 1797 somewhere in NY, and living in Tioga Co., PA. as early as 1812? He married Cynthia, maiden name unknown but may be SPENCER, and may be the daughter of Jonathan L (Lee) SPENCER and Lavina REXFORD/RAXFORD, but willing to know any other maiden name it might be. By 1830 they were living in Athens Co., OH that later became Hocking Co., OH. by 1833. Their known children were: Lorenzo D.; Oliver (my direct line); Orin P.; Frank; Christopher and one known daughter Cynthia who married George SENFF and moved to McLean Co., IL. There are two unknown daughter's and one may have married a Simeon BRIGGs. I am trying to find Jacob COLLINS parentage and his wife Cynthia's maiden name, and would welcome contact with descendants from any of their children. Judi Burkhardt

Good morning to the COLLINS list and the JONES COUNTY, MS list: My name is Bellinda MYRICK-BARNETT and I am searching for any information regarding: A COLLINS family that might have been in Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi in abt. 1824 possibly having moved from South Carolina possibly from Orangeburgh District. In need of confirming the name of Mary COLLINS, born: poss. Abt. 1790 poss. in South Carolina, living later in Ellisville, Jones County, MS, who married Evan ELLZEY of South Carolina to Ellisville, Jones County, MS. The COLLINS - ELLZEY is from my paternal grandmother's PARKER - LEWIS - BRIGHT - JENNINGS family group that married into the ELLZEY - COLLINS family. Specifically, I am trying to find the COLLINS family of Orangeburgh County, South Carolina whose daughter, Mary COLLINS, born: 1788 prob. in Orangeburgh County, SC, is believed to have married Evan ELLZEY, born: Abt, 1776 probably in Orangeburgh County, SC, both probably died in Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi. Mary COLLINS? and Evan ELLZEY were the parents of 3 known children at this time: (1.) George W. ELLZEY, born: 1810 in Orangeburgh County, South Carolina, died: ? in ?, md: Eliza HOSKINS, born: March 19, 1821 in ?, who was the daughter of Susannah BRIDGES, born: Abt. 1800 in ?, and Henry HOSKINS, born: Abt. 1800 in ?. Children of Eliza HOSKINS and George W. ELLZEY were: John E. ELLZEY and William Henry ELLZEY. (2.) Irvin E./Evan? ELLZEY, born: 1821 in SC? or MS?, died: ? in ?, md: ? ? (3.) Harriet(t) ELLZEY, born: 1824 prob. in Jones County, Mississippi, died: ? in ?, md: John LEWIS, born: Abt. 1820 in Covington or Jones County, Mississippi, died: Abt. 1880 poss. in Rankin County, Mississippi, who was the son of Nancy COPELAND, (d/o Rachael TUCKER & Ripley COPELAND, Sr., (RS,)) and Nancy's husband, Howell LEWIS.) Harriett ELLZEY and John LEWIS were the parents of: Martha Ann, Cintha, Nancy, Mary "Polly?," Sarah "Sally?," Elizabeth "Betty?," John L., Rachael Moranda/Marinda "Randa/Randy" LEWIS. I descend from Harriett ELLZEY and John LEWIS through their daughter, Rachael Moranda/Marinda "Randa/Randy" LEWIS; however, I am still trying to uncover either a mystery/secret or a simple error and/or confusion along the way. In original information that I received from my father regarding his mother, Allie Artimissa PARKER, and her mother, Rachael Moranda/Marinda "Randa/Randy" LEWIS, the information stated that Rachael Moranda's father was named John LEWIS but it showed her mother as Karrie KNIGHT. Now, the name of Karrie could possibly have been someone's confusion at some point looking at handwriting showing the name of Harriet and the name of KNIGHT could possibly have been confusion with the name of BRIGHT as my great grandmother, Rachael Moranda/Marinda "Randa/Randy" LEWIS, is known to have married twice to her 1st known husband, John Wesley BRIGHT, and then to my paternal great grandfather, Spencer B. PARKER, born: 1859 in either Smith or Rankin County, Mississippi, (son of Sarah "Sally" JENNINGS and Jeremiah "Jerry" PARKER.) Adding to the confusion is the information that Rachael Moranda/Marinda "Randa/Randy" LEWIS married both known husbands under the name of Moranda COLEMAN. We don't know why. There is no information about a previous husband nor the dates of recorded information make it appear that either of her parents married anyone else. There are COLEMAN and KNIGHT families in Jones County, MS that did marry into these various groups closely but just don't have anything else yet to go on. My grandmother, Allie Artimissa PARKER, born: 1892 near Braxton, Simpson County, MS, married James Martin "Jim" MYRICK, born: 1892 near Magee, Simpson County, Mississippi, (son of Harriet Katherine "Hattie" HERRINGTON and Calvin Pierce "Callie" MYRICK.) Can anyone on the list help with this in any way? In advance, I thank you. Sincerely, Bellinda Myrick-Barnett
