It is located near County Road 52 and Lookout Tower. This is according to Ohio Cemeteries Book that I have. Perhaps this is where your elusive Collins is buried. You may need to contact Carroll County and/or check Ohio Death Index on internet to see if you can find him; the index goes from 1908-1937. I was interested in your website because my maiden name is Collins. Joan/Ohio [email protected]

    1. [COLLINS-L] Who was William Collins
    2. Bob & Betty Collins
    3. There were many William Collins' living in Missouri in 1880, one of them may have married my grandmother, Cora Jane Hathaway, on 4 Feb 1889 in Campbell twp. Greene, MO. My question is which one of them is my grandfather? The couple had two children, Ruth Ann Collins born in 1895, and Robert Fitzsimmons Collins born in 1897. The Census of 1890 was burned, in the Census of 1900 Cora Jane and her children were living in Lebanon, Laclede, MO as a widow with her parents, Josiah and Temperence Hathaway. In the Census of 1900 the children's father was listed as being from Illinois, and their mother as being from Ireland. Cora Jane was born in Illinois, it could be possible that William Collins was Irish. Who were William Collins family? What happened to him? Where was he from? If yuou know, or just suspect, please write. Thank You Bob Collins

    1. Collins of Georgia
    2. Hoping someone can help me with my Collins Family of Gordon Co. GA. Benjamin F Collins b May 1814 in GA (according to all the census) died after 1900 Rachel Collins b 1814, (could this be Rachel Pennell who married Benjamin F Collins, 11 August 1832, in Hall Co. GA?) Children: John Collins b 1834 Georgia A Collins b 1840 James Collins b 1841 Nancy Jane Collins b 05 October 1845 (Married Thomas Vaughn of Bartow Co. GA) Sarah Josephine Collins b 1851 Mary C Collins b 1854 George Sanford "Bud" Collins b 28 Nov. 1856, married Teresa Floyd of Bartow Co. GA I have found at the Family History Center that most of the children if not all were born in Cass Co. GA. On the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census they are listed as living in Sonora, Gordon County GA. My question is since Sonora is close to the Bartow/Cass county line was it at one time in Cass County? On the 1880 and 1900 Census there was a William Hughes living with Benjamin Collins and is listed as a grandson. Which of the daughter's married a Hughes? I would appreciate any information on any of this Collins family. I will be happy to share what information I have. Marie Long

    3. Please contact me. It appears that we share the same great grandfather, Obediah Collins. After the war, he showed up in Bell Co, KY in the 1870 census with a young wife named Elizabeth, both from NC and married less than 1 year. They had a son, William Lewis Collins born about 1875 (my great grandfather) and another son that died a few hours after he was born. By 1880, Elizabeth dissappeared, Obediah and son William are living in Clay Co., KY in a Lovins household. In Sept. 1880, Obediah married again, this time to Lucy Powell. They had at least one child, Joseph. By 1900, Obediah is gone and Lucy is married to a Hensley. I haven't been avle to find a trace of Obediah beyohd this, he may have died. William Lewis Collins married Dora Jones in Claiborne Co., TN about 1895. They lived in Bell Co., KY. He was murdered in 1901 as he keft the voting polls because he did not vote the way they wanted him to. Beyond this, we know very little about the Collins family. I sure was delighted to see your letter on this list! Please write again. I would love to have a copy os the dates and info from the Bible that you have. Do you have any pictures of the family? 1. DNA studies including Collins & Melungeons
    2. Clay Daniels
    3. I thought I would report to the list at large the results of my inquiries into DNA studies involving Collins and also Melungeons. I admit I should have read the list archives first, as there was a big discussion in April of 2004 on this list about the Collins DNA project. In actuality there are two separate studies, one specifically for the Collins surname, and another Melungeon DNA project that includes Collins, among other surnames. Both projects are designed to test the male Y-Chromosome DNA. There is a test for the female Mitochondrial DNA, which both women and men can take. The mtDNA test will reveal the ancestry of your mother, her mother, and so on back to one of the approximately 20 so-called Daughters of Eve. As you can see, tracking mtDNA is quite difficult as children most often take the surname of their father, so mtDNA testing is beyond the scope of Y-Chromosome male DNA surname projects. (1) The COLLINS DNA project is through Relative Genetics of Salt Lake City. They are associated with Genetree and the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation but you will never find it that way. The Collins DNA project now has 12 members, apparently including a descendant of Old Thomas Collins who was a Melungeon. I say apparently, as the project does not seem to have a public website. To get to the project, go to www.relativegenetics.com and do a search on the Collins surname. It will lead you to the Collins group G2321. Rose Collins Lowther is the administrator. The cost for the basic 15 marker test is $95, and you can join from the website. The full 37 marker test is $195, with an intermediate range product as well. In my opinion, the basic 15 marker test is a good place to start, as you can always upgrade later if you want to. The basic 15 marker STR (Short Tandem Repeat) test will not only give you a string of numbers meaningless to most humans that can be compared to the numbers of the other participants to determine relationship, or lack of, but it will also provide an idea of your haplogroup and haplotype, which basically means male tribal ancestry. The basic 15 marker test will tell rather quickly if your male Collins line is or is not Melungeon. (2) The MELUNGEON DNA project is through Family Tree DNA of Houston. Bennett Greenspan, founder and leader of FTDNA, is the project administrator. Visit www.melungeons.com and in particular see: http://www.melungeons.com/articles/melungeondnaproject.htm Also, Nancy Morrison has a Melungeon email list. [ [email protected] ] Whether of not you believe your Collins line may be Melungeon, I found the Melungeon discussion interesting and worth looking into and reading, but in my humble opinion, I would stick with the Collins DNA project as it compares Collins to Collins. I do hope the Collins DNA project establishes a public website like many of the other surname projects. I will note with regret that my potential lead for a participant from our particular Collins line turned down the idea, although I still have hopes that his father may agree to participate. You really only need one participant from your line, but rounding up a willing male participant from your line is perhaps the most difficult part. Hope this was of interest and help, Clay Daniels

    3. All Collins found in the records of Hillcrest Cemetery located on Stanton Rd. in East Point , Ga. Are listed below. This does not include names buried before 1922 back to 1893 (Establishment) as a fire destroyed those records.(If marked, could be found via a foot search) Also, does not include burials from the past 7 years as recent burials were not entered. Some, even though buried in years where burials were being entered in or were not destroyed in the fire may also be missing. If this is the case and you are related and know for sure of a burial not listed, please notify us. If you see someone in your family line and want to know if a cause of death is listed, please email and I will check to see if it happens to be included with that particular burial. 3. > Hi Everyone, > > I'm hoping someone can help me find more information on my Collins side of the family. My grandfather was Tom Collins, born in 1899, Chicago. He married Marie Faller, born in 1900, Chicago. Tom's parents were John Collins, born February 13, 1848 in Lewisburgh, Bellacorrick, Co. Mayo, Ireland, he married his first wife Mary McHale. Mary was born in Crossmolina, Co. Mayo, Ireland. She died in 1878, Plainesville, Pa. John then married Philomena DeGan, they had 12 children, my grandfather Tom was the youngest child. The road block comes with John's parents, (another John) John Collins born and died in Ireland. He married Ellen Lynn, who was also born in Ireland but she died in Chicago. They had 3 children, Rose and Mary were born in Bellacorrick, Co. Mayo, Ireland. John was born in Lewisburgh, Bellacorrick, Co. Mayo, Ireland. I don't know where my aunt got this information about the town in Ireland, because there is no documents to confirm any of this. > > My request: I would love to get copies of these documents plus find out the parents of John and Ellen, where they came from in Ireland. I don't know much about doing research in Ireland. Any help I could get would be very appreciated... 2. Clay Daniels
    3. Rose Collins Lowther, I'm writing to inquire about the Collins DNA project. We have located a direct male descendant of our Collins line and would be interested in learning more about the project. I looked at www.genetree.com and didn't manage to find anything specifically about the Collins DNA project. Is there a public website for the project that shows the basic Collins lines represented in the study? How many participants are part of the study? We are also interested in coordinating with the private Melungeon DNA project that is hosted by www.familytreedna.com . Family Tree DNA does not yet have a Collins surname DNA project, although one could easily be started if needed. Our earliest known Collins ancestor is Rev. James Shepard Collins b. 1780's supposedly Grayson Co Va, moved to Letcher Co Ky about 1802 where he died 1869 and is buried there in the Colson Ky cemetery with his wife Elizabeth Lewis. I don't have reason to believe our James is related to the Vardy Collins family, but there are family stories from Letcher Co folks that need to be looked into. Clay Daniels [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Katie Ruth Collins" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2003 7:47 PM Subject: [COLLINS-L] Collins Family Genetic Project Hello Collins cousins. My name is Rose Collins Lowther, and read the Collins list posts via my Mom's computer. I am project coordinator for the Collins DNA Study which will be comparing the family tree and DNA (from direct male) Collins descendants. This study will help confirm research, or to eliminate false trails and will identify a most recent common ancestor between participants. The "Y-Chromosome (26-STR) DNA Test" through Genetree.com costs $225 (which is well worth the price in my opinion). Check with male Collins descendants and see if you can swab his inner cheek in order to solve this genealogical Collins jigsaw puzzle. Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions. ==== COLLINS Mailing List ====
