Hi Rose, Matt, I found the following websites that offer Y DNA tests: www.familytreedna.com - $229 for 24, $289 for 37 www.relativegenetics.com - $155 for 24, $195 for 37 ($40 more for analysis etc.) www.dnaconsultants.com - $310 for 36 markers www.genetree.com - $195 for 24 markers Not sure which company is the most reliable and has the most to offer. Where are the Collins DNA marker tests posted? They seemed to imply Collins were tested on their sites, but nothing was listed. Let me know your recommendations. I have my favorites based on what is offered on their websites and the prices. Frank --- Rose Lowther <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi. Calling all Collinses...... I'm looking for Collins males who have a richly documented Collins' family tree, I would like to open a dialogue with you because YOUR participation in the Collins DNA study is key to it's continued success. I'd like to document an abbreviated family tree including your Collins-male-ancestor's name, birth date, birthplace along with your contact information. And I'll place you on a "prosepective participant" list, and in order to locate a sponsor who has interest in your family patriarch who may be willing to cover the cost of your test. Matt Collins and Roger Collins also are working on the study, so if you are contacted by them regarding the study, they are as "good as gold" to talk to about it. I post from time to time just to let folks know the study is still out there. Collins males (from an unbroken line of Collins fathers and sons) are encouraged to participate. www.relativegenetics.com is the company we use for testing. The cost is much lower than previously mentioned in previous posts. It's now $155. I figure it's well worth the price to help determine a connection to other Collins lines, or to eliminate them as possible relations. We've collected samples from about 20 lines of Collins males thus far and have been able to connect 11 of them into three different connected lines. I'm a volunteer co-coordinator along with Roger Collins. We have been looking at Collins families in the GA, SC, VA, NC in the 1700's and 1800's. We are also interested in MD/DE Collins, as we have found descendants of these folks in and around Georgia in the early 1800's. So far our subjects are all of European descent, we haven't encountered any Melungeon results thus far, but that's probably because there's another study may have attracted the folks which suspect that type of lineage. I'll be happy to answer any questions anyone has about this study. It has helped me tremendously as it "proved" my ancestor (born 1785) shared a common ancestor along with another Collins male (died in 1806) whom I suspected a relationship but could never "prove". Thanks, Rose Collins Lowther Rose, I have gone to the website you mentioned and ordered a DNA kit. My Collins like comes from Berrien Co. GA and My 3rd cousin is a direct male of a male descendant. I have tried to link my line to that of Enoch Collins, but have not prevailed. My last known Male Collins Ancestor is John W. Collins b. abt. 1833 in N.C. and settled in Berrien Ga. died before 1890. Hopefully I can connect my family with another line to help in our research. I will keep in touch. Teri Wiggins Schneider

Found Deeds in the Smith Co Court House, Tyler TX: William C Collins, land grant by Gov P H Bell, 13 Apr 1840, Nacogdoches Land District, Smith Co, TX, for 320 acres of Isaac E Dunahoo headright. (Although the document is dated 1840 it may have been written in 1850 to honor a promise of Republic of Texas land for military service since Texas was a Republic in 1840 and P H Bell was not a governor until 1850.) Has anyone come across a COLLINS family link to this particular THOMPSON family? My ancestor was Erasmus Thompson Collins born 1819 KY married to Susan Willoughby on 15 May 1850 Mason Co KY. I *believe* his father was Aquilla Collins, but only have his participation in some court documents to support that (no will). I have no idea who Aquilla Collins' wife was or where they came from, but I suspect Maryland. With the name of Erasmus Thompson Collins I would suspect that there is a family tie in of some sort, but have never been able to find it. Other children of Aquilla (I *think*) are: Mason Collins born 1812, Milton J Collins born 1815, America Collins born @ 1823, John T. Collins born 1829 & Rebecca Collins born 1795. Hoping someone can prove or disprove this line. I've never come across anyone else researching this line of Collins. On the Monroe County USGenWeb site, there is a transcription of intruders on Cherokee lands. Evidently the names early on the list may have been there as early as 1798. Early on the list is a John Collins. I'm looking into the possibility that this John Collins might have been the father of Green Berry (or Greenberry) Collins, born in Tennessee of North Carolina parents abt 1822. He married Mary Ann (Polly) Garrett about 1847. EdrieAnne Broughton [email protected]
Looking for information on my ggf. Here is what I know. James Shaughnessy was born in Ireland about 1820. He married Honora Martell (b. abt 1815) before 1843 in Ireland. They had two children – David b. 1843 and James b. May 17, 1848 both in Limerick. They came to America together or separately between 1850 & 1854 settling in Cleveland, Ohio. They had two more children – Margaret b. about 1854 and Mary b. about 1858 in Ohio. Honora died March 28, 1862 in Cleveland. James then married Sarah Collins (who was born in Ireland) between 1862 & 1865. James & Sarah had two children – Margaret b. November 14, 1865 and John b. December 29, 1869 both in Ohio. David served in the Union Army during the Civil War rising to Sergeant and his brother James fought in the Indian Wars in Wyoming. He lost his life with many other heroes that day, victims of the terrorists. Firefighters from all over have come to the aid and rescue of the tragedy in New York and Washington, D.C. Many firefighters lost their lives to save someone else's; the truth of the matter is, they do this every single day. They truly are heroes!! I know many people feel helpless, especially those who live far from NYC and D.C. We all want to do something to show our appreciation and our support. I think we can. In honor of the bravery, courage and determination of American firefighters, there should be a day in our nation to celebrate and appreciate their hard work and never ending passion for saving lives. I think we should honor all those other heroes who still live today. I'm starting a Petition for a National Firefighters day. Will you help make every September 11th "National Firefighters Day"?
