Hello list, I am still looking for Amos Collins b: abt 1784-1790 VA wife was Mayvilla Unknown. They had the following children. Calvin b: abt 1810 TN possibly Claiborne/Grainger TN according to marriage records of some of his children John Gilbert b: 1812 TN Jestine b: abt 1812-1820 TN Freeling b: 1816 Hawkins/Grainger Co. TN Aaron b: abt 1823 Harlan Co. KY (per 1860 Census) Nancy b: abt 1824 Elizabeth b: abt 1825-1827 KY Robert b: abt 1828-1830 Clay Co. KY Benjamin b abt 1833 Clay Co. KY Margaret b: abt 1835 Clay Co. KY we are probably missing at least one female from this household. This family first appears in Clay Co. KY on the 1824 Tax list. They may have been in Harlan Co. Ky by 1819 per the 1819 List of taxables in Harlan Co. KY (this list is actually found at the end of the 1819 Tax list for Knox Co. Harlan formed from Knox). However, there is an issue on the name being either Arin or Amis Collins. Anyone with any info on Amos would be appreciated. It is my hope to also find a male Collins from this line to participate in the DNA project. Theresa Goodwin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Is there anyone on the list who has Collins originating in the Dunmanway area? I can't be sure that Julia Collins came from Dunmanway, but she and Michael O'Mahony had a son Maurice who was baptized in the RC parish of Dunmanway in 1826. They were living in the townland of Toom at the time. I have just learned Julia's name so have no more information on her. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, December 16, 2005 6:00 AM Subject: COLLINS-D Digest V05 #110
Lori, if we get into a long discussion, we may want to take it off this message board so as to not bore so many folks. My e-mail is [email protected] I would be very interested in what you could show as to whether my Elisha Collins, b. 30 Nov 1759 in Halifax, Co. Va and son of Joseph Collins and Lucy Marchbanks Prisher Collins, is indeed related by marriage to your James Staton Collins. Could you enlighten me on that issue. Charles
Lori, thanks for your response to my posting. I wasn't very clear and probably confused a lot of folks on Collins-L. I have extensive genealogy of the Elisha Collins Family. He was married in 1783 to Frances Madison, dtr of Roger Madison. I have the genealogy on his descendants, and probable/possible ancestry to a point among the upper echelon "Collins" of Virginia, toward Caroline County and 1766. I descend from his son Nathaniel Madison Collins. He had other sons, Richard, Meredith, Gabriel, Stephen, Joseph (we know nothing about this alleged son), John, (no information) Taliaferro (no information) and Josiah. Rose Lowther has initiated a DNA study to see if the various Collins lineages can be distinguished from each other. At this time, we have DNA on a descendant of Nathaniel, and DNA on a descendant of Richard in this Elisha Collins Family. I chose to look at the descendants of Elisha Collins because he was the ARW ancestor, and we have a lot of information on him and his descendants. The two DNA's we have at this moment are 100% compatible. We have DNA on a descendant from a brother to Elisha which is also 100% compatible, which in effect, if my senile thinking is correct, pushes the Most Recent Common Ancestor up one more notch. So we have Richard's descendant, and then Nathaniel's descendant, and Meredith is next in line. Ironically, much of our Elisha Collins genealogy was compiled by the descendants of Meredith. One of my correspondents, on this line, is recently deceased, the other, his brother has apparently changed his e-mail address. So, Meredith's folks, where are you? Thanks Lori Charles
Meredith Collins, b. 13 March 1789 in Kentucky was a son of Elisha Collins, b. 1759 in Halifax Co. Va. He lived in Kentucky and migrated to Alabama. He left a large family. I have lost contact with this family. I would like to communicate with one of his male descendants to encourage his participation in the Collins DNA Project. Charles
List I gave my 2nd great grandfather the long last name. I gave it as STONE, but should have been COLLINS. The rest is correct for what I have. Mike Trowbridge
List, I have a 2nd great grandfather, Marton (Morton/Martin) Stone, who was born in Kentucky according to his death certificate on March 28, 1850. To this date I have not been able to find out who his parents are. His death certificate (died August 19, 1836) does not show his parents names but does say that they were born in Kentucky. Any help in this area greatly appreciated. Mike Trowbridge
thank you, Michael, I noticed that family, too, but I'm not sure if it's them-I need to find him in an earlier census, as a child with parents. the curse of the 1890 census strikes again. Anyone researching COLLINS in these areas? San Francisco, CA Seattle, WA Oregon Alaska My great-grand aunt, Mary HUGHES COLLINS 1867-1933 could have been married to a William COLLINS. According to the 1910 Census for Eagle, Alaska she was a widow, having been married for 16 years with one child, most likely a son. She died in Eagle in 1933. Looking for clues and connections. Looking for a descendant of Fisk Collins....... Fisk A. Collins was born December 18, 1888, at Fruita, Colorado, where he lived and attended school until May, 1910 when he came with his parents to Mountain Home. He enlisted March 12. 1918 in the Coast Artillery, and left for Fort Logan, Denver, Colorado, and from there sent to Ft. McDowell, Angel Island, and from there sailed on the transport Sherman to Fort Kamehameha, Hawaiian Islands. Mumps and measles kept them in camp six weeks and then he was placed in Company 2, Oahu, Hawaiian Department Coast Artillery. He was discharged February 6, reaching home February 20, 1919, where he has been since his discharge on a ranch near Mountain Home. Fisk married Jessie Hickok in 1920. Fisk died 17 Aug 1976. He was listed as of being from Hammett, Idaho in his father's obituary (Frank Alonzo Collins) printed in The Ukiah (California) Press, Wednesday, August 28, 1946.

According to the research posted on the internet, Theophilus Collins and Mary Ann Elliot were married 17 June 1839. They had at least two sons: William Turpin Collins (16 June 1845 - 31 Jan 1882) John Meshack Collins (18 June 1853 - ??) > I am helping coordinate the Collins DNA Surname project, and we are seeking / asking for a descendant of Anthony Collings ( 1678, Cornwall England) who would volunteer - at no cost to him - to participate in the Collins DNA Surname Project. The purpose of the project is to include as many well-documented Colonial and Early American Collins family lines as we can identify in order to build a good database. The results will help draw a picture of how the various - and diverse - Collins families are related (or not related). At present we have over 40 participants, representing more than a dozen family lines. I would like to see a descendant of the Anthony Collings line included to help fill out this picture. We can do this through a simple DNA test. Participating in the study is literally as simple as rubbing a Q-tip inside your cheek. The participant must be a direct male descendant (still bearing the Collins name) and be able to provide his paternal line back to Anthony Collings. Anthony Collings/Collins was born 1678 in Cornwall, England and died about 1754 in Charles County, Maryland. His children and grandchildren are found later in Albemarle County, VA, as well as Carter County, TN, and Stokes and Surry County, NC. (A fuller family tree for Anthony is included below.) With the participants we already have, the project is proving to be a useful tool for Collins genealogists. Knowing whether a Collins ancestor is related -- or not related -- to other Collinses can save a genealogist years of frustration and wasted effort barking up the wrong family tree and point us in the right direction. Participating in the study requires only about 10 minutes of one's time. And since there is a sponsor for the cost of the test, there would be no cost to the volunteer. The results are posted on the Relative Genetics website, and will be shared with the participants and others interested in the project. Briefly, the test uses information from the Y-chromosome which is passed from father to son almost unchanged, which is why the volunteer participant must be a male, and he must be a direct male descendant (still bearing the Collins name). The genetic information helps establish a "profile" for each Collins family line. Over the decades and centuries the Y-chromosome slowly changes and the profile for each family becomes distinctive. The individual test either proves or eliminates whether two family lines come from a common ancestor.
