    1. Andrea file on Collins
    2. Alice Sanders
    3. Andrea did Collins research for a number of people. The file was microfilmed for the Salt Lake City Genealogical Society in 1947. The file is available in any of the Family History Libraries around the country. If anyone is interested I have a copy of the Leonardo Andrea file of his Collins genealogical research in the southern states. I've only found one mistake he made and that was the name of the wife of Joseph Collins of Amelia County, Virginia. If anyone is interested, I can send an attachment. The file is a large one and I've had some who could not open it because of the limitations of their ISP email regulations. Send you name and email and we can give it a try. Alice Sanders

    1. FYI: Urban Legend: Do Not Flash Headlights !!!!
    2. Hi, Just checked this out with a friend whom is a producer the news for one of the major network station affiliates in Houston and he says that it is an Urban Legend and not true. B. Barnett In a message dated 4/20/2006 10:41:14 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: HOUSTON POLICE AND FBI HAVE CRACKED SEVERAL GANGS HERE IN HOUSTON AREA AND IN THE NATION!!!! THIS INFORMATION IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!!!! DON'T FLASH HEADLIGHTS AT CAR WITH LIGHTS NOT ON!! Police officers working with the DARE program have issued this Warning: If you are driving after dark and see and on-coming car with no headlights on, DO NOT FLASH YOUR LIGHTS AT THEM! This is a common Bloods member "initiation game" that goes like this: The new gang member under initiation drives along with no headlights, and the first car to flash their headlights at him is now his "target". He is now required to turn around and chase that car, then shoot and kill every individual in the vehicle in order to complete his initiation requirements. Police Depts across the nation are being warned. Their intent is to have all the new bloods nationwide drive around on Friday and Saturday nights with their headlights off. In order to be accepted into the gang, they have to shoot and kill all individuals in the first auto that does a courtesy flash to warn them that their lights are off. Make sure you share this information with all the drivers in your family! Please forward this message to all your friends and family members to inform them about this initiation ritual.

    3. Concerning the post about "Do Not Flash Headlights !!!!", we shouldn't be posting this kind of stuff to our genealogy sites And -- before forwarding these kind of "WARNINGS" we all receive periodically to friends and acquaintances, they need to be checked as to whether they are valid or just a hoax. There are several sites to that can be used to check out these "WARNINGS/URBAN LEGENDS" such as: http://www.snopes.com/ http://www.askbobrankin.com/urban_legends_and_hoaxes.html http://www.surfinglegendsandhoaxes.com/hoaxes/ The "Do Not Flash Headlights" warning has been circulating for years. See the SNOPES website about this at: http://www.snopes.com/horrors/madmen/lightsout.asp

    3. Has any lister tried the new (new to me, anyway) www.lostcousins.com site which uses the 1881 England & Wales and Scotland censuses to help match common ancestors/ find relatives? If so, have you been successful in finding "matches"? I've had no luck yet with my entries for direct ancestors, which is disappointing, and am now considering starting out on households containing my blood relations from the 1881 census - more in hope than in expectation ... 1. Collins surname general remarks and possible connections
    2. Kennth McIntyre
    3. Dear Listers, In researching my family history have found a number of Collin connections and just wanted to pass them on. My be helpful to someone. So, plase bar with me for a while as I tell you how the Collins could be related to my Mcntyre and my relatives. After my father passed on, I found a old letter of his that indicated that he believed his grandmother's family name was Collins. He was mistaken about that, as his grandmother was Margaret, Hanlin (aka Hanlon) Rodgers. However, research does indicated that the Collins connection existed with his grandfather, Dennis Rodgers, husband of Margaret. Dennis Rodgers was the son of William and Catherine Collins. Little is known about either at this time. other than William was born about 1780 in London, England and Catherine Collins was born about 1780 in Ireland. My gut feeling is that they married some time around 1809, most likely at Pottsville, Pa., Where both the Rodger and the Collins family had settled when they immigrated to the states. I also suspect that both families were formally resident of County Donegal, Ireland. Both families were Catholic. Also, in the 1830's living in the Pottsville area of Schuykill, Co. Pa. Lived a Dominic Gallagher, who in time married a Alice Collins of that area. Dominic was born at the Aran Islands off the coast of Donegal about 1806 . Alice Collins probably in Donegal. I suspect that she and Catherine Collins ,who married William Rodgers could be sisters. About 1833. James Hanlin, my great grandfather, along with Dominic Gallagher and possibly other related families, relocated from Pa. to Franklin Twp., Columbiana Co. Ohio, where they settled buying farm land. I suspect that some of my Rodger family were also in the group. Review of the Map plot plans of Franklin Twp indicates that a number of Hanlin/Hanlon and Rodgers families lived in that area, and were most likely relatives. Children of the three families, seemed to intermarry into these families. Dennis Rodgers marrying a daughter of James Hanlin ( Margaret ), a son of James Hanlin, ( James Jr. ) marrying Susan Gallagher, etc.etc.. My connection to theses families came about, when , Dennis Rodgers and his wife, Margaret Hanlin Rodgers, relocated from Ohio around 1866 and restlled in the area of McDonald, Pa. Allegheny Co., Pa. with their 12 children all of whom were born in Franklin Twp. Ohio. My grandfather, William McIntyre, born in Scotland in 1846, married Catherine Rodgers in 1869 and the couple had 12 children, my father being the last born child. Hoping that the above may help some of the Collin listers. Would appreciate hearing from any that may find some connection of their Collins to mine, and apologize for taking up so much time in stating the connection. Take care all. Kenneth McIntyre, Victorville, CA.

    1. PENN Family Photograph with connection to COLLINS Family
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" two old photographs, both identified as Mrs. Nannie PENN or Aunt Nannie PENN. The first was taken at the A. V. Caro Studio in New York City, NY, probably sometime in the 1880's with Nannie appearing to be in her 30's at the time. The second photograph was taken at the Kenyon Studio in New London, CT, likely sometime in the early 1900's with Nannie looking to be in her 60's at the time. Based on limited research I believe these are photographs of Nancy B. RATHBUN PENN. Nancy B. RATHBUN was b. 27 Nov 1856 in Noank, CT to parents Calvin RATHBUN and Rebecca PRENTICE. Nancy married Walter R. PENN on the 17th of Sept 1874 in Stonington, CT and died 22 Apr 1914 in CT. Her husband Walter was still alive at the time of her death. During the 1880 census the couple was living in Groton, CT with census records providing the following information: Walter PENN, age 30, born MD, a Stone Quarryman, parents born MD Nannie B. PENN, age 23, born CT, Housekeeping, parents born CT In 1900 I found the couple still living in Groton, CT with census records indicating the following information: Walter PENN, age 50, born Apr 1850, married 26 years, born PA, parents born PA, a Pilot Nannie B. PENN, wife, age 40, born Nov 1859, married 26 years, no children, born CT, parents born CT Rebecca PENN, niece, age 15, born Mar 1884, born NJ, parents born NJ/CT, at School Lucy COLLINS, boarder, age 15, born Nov 1885, born CT, parents born NJ/CT, at School And in 1910 still living in Groton, CT with census records under the name PEUN providing the following information: Walter PEUN, age 58, married 35 years, born PA, parents born PA, a Mariner Nannie B. PEUN, age 53, married 35 years, 1 child/none living, born CT, parents born CT Lucy COLLINS, niece, age 24, born CT, parents born NJ/CT George RATHBUN, brother-in-law, age 51, born CT, parents born CT, a Lobster Fisherman Another photograph recovered from the same source may well be related, it is of Abby RATHBUN MEISTER and Almon MEISTER which was taken at the Washburn Studio in New London, Connecticut. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with Abby likely in her 40's and young Almon likely about 10-12 years old at the time. I'm hoping to locate someone from the family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
