    1. Philadelphia, PA Collins
    2. Hello, I am hoping some one can help me with one of my brickwall. My great grandfather- Thomas James COLLINS born March 1845 Philadelphia PA, son of William & Eliza MITCHEL COLLINS ( from his marriage record to Elizabeth where is also gives his place of birth as Phila.). He married (1) Jane V. SHEEHAN who died February 09, 1870 in Philadelphia during a miscarriage and was buried in Union Harmony Grounds, Philadelphia, PA. He married (2) Elizabeth WITHERS, daughter of James WITHERS & Elizabeth NEVINS, July 1872 in Newburgh, Orange Co., NY Their children were named Florence Adele, Margaret Loredo, Jennie, Lauretta ( Loretta), Edwin, John Raymond, Thomas, Mable and Lillian Mary. Odd that none were named after his or her parents. Thomas enlisted in the PA 187th Regiment 3 March 1864 at Philadelphia 18th Ward 3rd District, age 20. August 03, 1865- discharged at Harrisburg, PA His enlistment papers say he was born in Ireland. Thomas died September 30, 1900, Yonkers, Westchester Co., NY, where he is buried. His death cert says he was born in Phila, which also states his parents were both born in Ireland ( as do later census records). I cannot find him with or without his parents in ANY Philadelphia census. He is a weaver by trade in 1864, later he is a carpet weaver. I am able to find him from 1880 on with his 2nd family. I have tried every which way to search for him on Ancestry's census. I have copies of many years of city directories for Philadelphia for COLLINS & MITCHELL. I have his Civil War Pension file and his and his wives death certs. Without locating him in a city directory ( or a census record for the Ward number), I would imagine it would be difficult to figure out what church his family went to so I could research baptism records, etc. In 1870 in the 16th Ward Phila. there is a J Thomas Collins age 26 carpet weaver b. ENG with William Collins age 5 b. PA; Francis age 4 b. PA and Thomas age 2 b. PA. They seem to be living with a Averell family but lines drawn on the census page make me think they are supposed to be with a Averell family at the top of the page who is also a carpet weaver. This is the closest I get to finding him. I cannot track that man and those children after that. If they were his children, why not take them to his 2nd marriage? In 1880 there is a Thomas Collins age 12 living and working at an office boy at the Lincoln Institute in Phila. By 1880 my Thomas J. COLLINS is married and living in Newburgh, NY I am at a loss on where to look next. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Judy Wolf

    1. RE: [COLLINS-L] Grandma and the Family Tree
    2. Carrol
    3. Dear Joanne and others; I love it. Who wrote it? This Grandma sounds like me. My husband is also a researcher but I am more like Grandma...I can get a little compulsive too! We just returned from one of my family reunions. I was so excited when I left to go, because I had broken through one of those 'infamous brick walls' and couldn't wait to share! Right!!!! They still got that 'eyes glazed over' look that non-researchers often get when we try to share the wealth of our discoveries. Three Cheers for all those Climbing Family Trees...even to the dismay of their unhooked family. (unhooked meaning, they just haven't found out yet how much fun it is to do!) Carrol in Michigan -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, June 24, 2006 11:24 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [COLLINS-L] Grandma and the Family Tree How fun is this one?? GRANDMA AND THE FAMILY TREE There's been a change in Grandma, we've noticed her of late, She's reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracking back the family, we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby, she's climbing Family Trees. Poor Grandpa does the cooking and now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and Dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered, she's busy as a bee, Compiling Genealogy, for the Family Tree. She has no time to baby-sit, the curtains are a fright. No buttons left on Granddad's shirt, the flower bed's a sight. She's given up her club work, the serials on TV, The only thing she does nowadays is climb the Family Tree. She goes down to the Courthouse and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before. The books are old and dusty, they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when you're climbing Family Trees. The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR. A worthwhile avocation, to that we all agree, A monumental project, to climb the Family Tree. Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German, all the way. Some went on West to stake their claim. Some stayed near by the sea. Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze, That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees. There were pioneers and patriots mixed in our kith and kin, Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee, Each times she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree. Their skills were wide and varied, from Carpenter to Cook, And one (Alas) the record shows was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge, some tutored for a fee. Long lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree. To some it's just a hobby, to Grandma it's much more, She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept, and now for you and me, They live again in spirit, around the Family Tree. At last she's nearly finished and we are each exposed. Life will be the same again, this we supposed! Grandma will cook and sew, serve cookies with our tea. We'll all be fat, just as before that wretched Family Tree. Sad to relate, The Preacher called and visited for a spell, We talked about the Gospel, and other things as well, The heathen folk, the poor- and then- 'twas fate, it had to be, Somehow the conversation turned to Grandma and the Family Tree. We tried to change the subject, we talked of everything, But then in Grandma's voice we heard that old familiar ring. She told him all about the past and soon was plain to see, The Preacher, too, was nearly snared by Grandma and the Family Tree. He never knew his Grandpa, his mother's name was ..Clark? He and Grandma talked and talked, outside it grew quite dark. We'd hoped our fears were groundless, but just like some disease, Grandma's become an addict--- She's hooked on Family Trees. Our souls were filled with sorrow, our hearts sank with dismay, Our ears could scarce believe the words we heard our Grandma say, "It sure is a lucky thing that you have come to me, I know exactly how it's done, I'll climb your Family Tree. 1. Sen. Frist...the mouth of Veterans
    2. I just saw Sen. First of TN interviewed and he stated that he speaks for American Veterans everywhere. That is why he directed the Senate to approve the Attorney General, two Supreme Court and several other Federal judges. He went on to say that the number one issue for Veterans is the Flag Burning Amendment. Personally, I wouldn't mind an amendment against burning our flag in protest but the ritual for worn or torn flags includes burning. I can think of a number of other "amendments" that I would consider of more value at this time. That doesn't mention all the other things I believe the Congress should be doing. I looked of this guy, who considers himself "the voice of American Veterans". He's never served in any branch of the armed services, national guard or ROTC. I'm disgusted God Bless............... 1. Collins, Charles W. - LA
    2. Hello all: When I was in Mooringsport, LA, I found a headstone for Charles W. Collins, born June 17, 1897, was a private in the 106 Ammo Truck Company in WW I and died December 1, 1965. I took the picture for two reasons: 1. In case I found out later that he might be one of my Collins 2. To see if he may be a relative of any of the Collins that I have in my database. I will send the photo of the headstone to anyone who may be interested. Jackie
