I am researching Collins also and it is hard. I had to find out when the counties of Virginia were made into Kentucky. That is a good thing to know when researching Ky or Va. Marilyn

Dear Listers: I have been able to discern this much this far from information on this list and also the Caroline County VA list: My John R. Collins, son of Robert and Anna Hampton Collins, was born in Caroline County, VA. His father was the son of John and Mary Carr Collins. John died around 1797--Mary died around 1805-1806. I do not know when Robert Collins died but it appears before either parent as he is not mentioned in the court records. Other children of John and Mary Collins were: Lewis Collins James Collins who had 12 children Sarah Collins Phebe Collins Mary Collins Terrell Ann Collins Sacre Betty Collins Wright Frances Collins Henderson Jane Collins Pope Lucy Collins Wilson I am trying to discern-- JOhn R's birthdate date of parents marriage date of father's death date of mother's death Joanne Galvin Researching Northup, Hampton, McCall, Phelps, Blake, Daggett, Syler, Berridge,Plymale, Kinder, Cottrell, Gilbert, Baker, Rood
Howdy, I am a descendant of the Campbell Family, <BUT> I hope that Some Collins Lister will be able to help Me; There was one Miss Collins That Married Fountain Campbell in Augusta County Va. in 1826. We have a very good record of this Family from 1826 up to Now. Our Problem IS, we have not been able to determine the Name of Cousin Fountain Campbell's Father Who was born in The Part of Amherst County That became Nelson County, Va in 1808. THROUGH research, I have found that Often the Brides Family Would have Information That the Groom's Family does not have, THANKS. AT Powell <[email protected]>
Was it Dillard and Nimrod who were in Henry Co. VA? Nimrod was also in Madison or Culpeper VA where the James Collins' family lived. Beverly sent me your address from her correspondence. We are always trying to prove that the two Collins families were related. Nita Reed
I have hit a brick wall in my COLLINS line. My maternal Great-grandmother, Edith COLLINS, was born Jan. 1867 somewhere here in Wisconsin. By the time of the census in June, 1870 she is back in IN with her mother, Rachel, who was born in 1829 in IN. Edith's father isn't listed in the census so I don't know if he died in WI or IN, if they were married in WI or in IN and then moved to WI or what. I've searched the records here in WI and found nothing since civil records weren't kept consistently until 1890. Later in 1870 Rachel Collins marries William Chandler in Kosciusko County, IN. Edith married my Great-grandfather James Elder in 1887 in Kosciusko County, IN. I would love to get information about Edith's father/Rachel's first husband so that I could take this line further back. Shirley Hunsaker [email protected]

My Collins went from Ky to Indiana, my grandfather was the only one from his line to come to Texas back in the early 1900s I am sure more are here. I have found the other places. Floyd Collins is supposed to be in the line a cousin to my grandfather that is what he told my grandmother. They were in Addision township, Kokomo, and Shelbyville, Indiana. Marilyn -- There is a John Collins in Gallia County, Ohio--and I thought that he was my John Collins, as his step-father and step siblings were all there, but that hasn't been borne out so far. The John R. Collins that I am searching for is the son of Robert Collins and Anna Hampton--Robert Collins is the son of John Collins of Caroline County, VA. I think that John R. may have moved on to Montgomery County, TN as one shows up there in the 1820 census--and there are Hamptons there, relatives of his mother. I am still digging, will keep your email on file and if I hit paydirt, will forward info to you if you think we are on the same track. Hello List, I need help on my Collins families, especially my 3rd ggf Nero Collins. Nero was born c 1820 and married Martha Wright 04/30/1838 in Grainger Co., TN. Martha may be a daughter of Moses Wright. Other than finding Nero on the 1840 Grainger Co., TN census and a brief mention of him in an estate sale in 1848 where he purchased a bucket, he has left no footprints I can find. The 1850 Grainger Co., TN census has Martha as head of house, no Nero, and children Mary, Hannah/Harriett, Greenville, James, and Easter. In 1860 Grainger Co., TN census, Martha appears to be still in the same area, is listed as a widow and now has Pleasant with her. Her next door neighbor is a Wesley Collins who married a Jane and their children are Angelina, Cornelia, Riley, and William. I have no information on Jane. Wesley may be related as well, his daughter Angelina is named the same name as Levi Perry's sister, and Riley could be after one of the Riley Collins. A theory I have is that I know a Nathan Perry fought between 1846-1850 in Mexico and was injured. It is possible that Nero went with Nathan and was a casualty there in Mexico. I find this Nathan on the VA census 1850, 1860, 1870 and died 1874. I did find a Nathaniel Perry in 1840 Grainger Co., TN living next door to old Griffin Collins. Nero and Martha had five known children: Mary Collins b 1838 Grainger Co., TN d 1893 Wise Co., VA, married 1856 Grainger Co., TN to Levi Perry (same Levi as mentioned above), son of Nathan Perry and Mary Collins (daughter of old Griffin) Perry. Hannah/Harriett Collins b 1840 Greenville Colllins b 1841 Tennessee d 1917 Claiborne Co.,TN, married Martha Lane daughter of G.W. Lane and Margaret Smith Lane. James Collins b 1845 Easter Collins b 1847 and married a John Collins 02/26/1865 in Grainger Co., TN And then there is Pleasant Collins born c 1849-1851. Descendents of Pleasant do not believe he was a son of Nero and the census records appear to support this theory. Pleasant married Ludima Perry b 1860 Wise Co., VA and died 1935 in Virginia, a daughter of James Perry born VA and Francis Hall Perry born NC. I have a second marriage for this Ludima to a G. Pleas Collins 10/22/1879 Upsur, VA. I do not know if these are the same men. Pleasant, son of Martha and husband of Ludima Perry Collins was also married to Mary Ann "Polly" Collins in 1875 in Wise Co., VA. This Mary's parents are Riley Collins and Emaline McGinnis Collins. Riley is thought to be a son of old Griffin and later in life Emaline McGinnis Collins married Levi Perry mentioned above who was first married to Nero Collins' oldest daughter Mary. This marriage between Levi and Emaline was 1895 in Tasso, Wise Co., VA. I also found where I believe it is James, the son of Martha has gone to Wise Co., VA by 1870 and his mother apparently follows him there and she may have remarried. Martha is not in Grainger Co., TN in 1870. If anyone can help I would appreciate any clues, hints. Also if someone sees any errors in my data PLEASE correct me. Hi, Very interesting information! My Collins family was living in Warrick County IN near Boonville (Newburgh and Yankeetown) during this same time. But I don't have data on a Willson. My line was Jonas B Collins b 1795 in Vermont (son of Ebenezer, Rev War Vet from Mass. descended from Henry Collins the starchmaker of Lynn, Mass.) and his wife Eleanor Briscoe, and they had a farm on the Ohio River in Yankeetown (where the Alcoa plant now stands). There is a Collins Lake there too. Ebenezer & his brother Henry were the first settlers in West Brome Township, Quebec Canada and Jonas grew up there. Ebenezer & Henry left Canada for Illinois around 1840, as did their children. Jonas had at least two sons who also made homes in that Newburgh Indiana area: Slaughter Collins b 1840 and his brother Salvin Collins who were both Civil War Veterans. I have never heard of a Willson Collins and I don't know if Jonas had a son by this name - but he would have only been 19 when Willson was born. Slaughter's wife was Elizabeth Comfort Pearson. She lived to be 105 and my father in law attended her 100th birthday in 1950 in Tulsa OK. By 1920, the Slaughter Collins children had all left Indiana and were all living near Tulsa OK. One son, Louis Collins, was very successful in the oil industry there. I don't have much information on the Salvin line. Hope that helps!
