I might as well ask about the parents of one more William Collins. William Smith Collins was born in 5/30/1798 or 1799 in Stepney Parish Somerset Maryland. His parents were James O. (? O'dell) Collins and Sarah or Eleanor McGraw. James was a sailor and drowned in the Chesapeake Bay. James O. & Sarah are among my solid brick walls; I can find very little on them. I am interested in finding a William H. Collins b.1859 in Delaware. He married Mary Avelar b. 1863 in Delaware. They were married in 1883 and had Mary, Robert, William Frank, Rhoda, Hurasha, Levin, Emery, Ross, and Marie. They are found in Wicomico Co. and other locations in Maryland. William's father was another William, perhaps born in Maryland. Can anyone help? I'd love to know which line of Collinses he comes from. Thank you Michael. You would think that at least one of these many people subscribing to this mailing list would have found a child born Jacob in one of their lines who would be about the right age for me to dig from. Unfortunately like others here have noted it is especially hard when you have only one name and uncertainty about so much more. I've often wondered if he broke off ties with his ancestoral family for some reason. Especially when he virtually gave away his children when hard times came instead of reaching out for help to his family. I've been searching for his relatives for about 15 years now, I hope it doesn't take another 15 to find out something new. With all of the southern Collins that I am reading about I feel a little strange being the only northerner but here is the story of my Collins': 1832 James Collins is born in County Galway, Province of Connaught, Ireland. 7/11/1852 James Collins (age 20) marries Ann Collins (age 17) (her real maiden name) at St. Peter's RC Church in Jersey City, NJ by Father John Kelly. The witnesses are Martin Kane and Mrs. Maloney. 12/23/1856 Daughter Sarah Amelia Collins (age 9 months) passes away at home in the 3rd Ward, Jersey City, NJ. Sarah is buried at St. Peter's Church, 155 William Street, Belleville, NJ, Old Section, Row 9, Grave 4. (no stone) 6/17/1857 Son John Collins (age 1 week) passes away at home in the 3rd Ward, Jersey City, NJ. John is buried at St. Peter's Church, 155 William Street, Belleville, NJ, Old Section, Row 9, Grave 4. (no stone) 5/3/1855 Daughter Catherine Mary Collins (age 8 months) passes away at home in the 3rd Ward, Jersey City, NJ. Catherine is buried at St. Peter's Church, 155 William Street, Belleville, NJ, Old Section, Row 9, Grave 4. (no stone) 10/6/1858 Son Michael James Collins is born in the 3rd Ward, Jersey City, NJ. Michael is baptized at St. Joseph's RC Church, Jersey City, NJ on 10/25/1858 by Father Venuta. The witnesses to the baptism are Timothy Collins and Bridget Bunker. 2/12/1860 Daughter Margaret Collins is born in the 3rd Ward, Jersey City, NJ. Margaret is baptized at St. Peter's RC Church, Jersey City on 2/16/1860 by Father John Kelly. The witnesses to the baptism are John Lesby and Bridget Lilly. 8/7/1861 James enlists for a three-year period in the US Army in New York City. Upon enlistment James is mustered into Captain Joseph O'Neil's A Company of the Third Regiment of New York's 63rd Volunteers Division as a private. 6/22/1864 James receives a severe leg wound and is captured at the Second Battle of Petersburg, VA. Division records show that his company was probably fighting in the Battle of Jerusalem Plank Road when he was wounded. He is sent to nearby Libby Prison in Richmond, VA with a large group of his men from the 63rd Division. 8/1/1864 James dies from his wounds at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA. He is buried at Mt. Arlington Cemetery (location unknown). Daughter Margaret Collins is four years old and probably never knows her father who has been away fighting in the War of the Rebellion for most of her life. At the time of his death James has still not received the $100 bounty owed him for re- enlisting as a Veteran Volunteer. 6/21/1870 Federal Census has new husband Patrick and widow Ann Collins Collins Fitzgibbons living in Union (Rutherford Park), Bergen County, NJ with Michael Collins (age 13) and Margaret Collins (age 10) 12/2/1903 Widow Ann Collins Fitzgibbons (age 68) passes at home at 132 Francis Street, East Rutherford, NJ. Ann is buried at St. Peter's Cemetery, Belleville, NJ with second husband Patrick Fitzgibbons, infant children Catherine Collins, Sarah Collins, John Collins and Elizabeth Reynolds (age 55). They are in Old Section, Row 9, Grave 4. (no stone) Notes: I have no information on when James came over, on what ship or where he landed. I assume Castle Clinton in Battery Park, NYC and joined the huge Irish contingent in Jersey City. The were many other Collin's in Rutherford and East Rutherford and they were related but I do not have the details on how. Also don't know where in Galway that he came from. Any help would be greatly appreciated Dennis Doyle

My gt. gt. gt. grandfather JAMES COLLINS was born about 1781 near Lissan, County Derry, Northern Ireland. He served in the British Army for many years, taking part in the Battle of Waterloo, in the Royal Horse Artillery. After his army career, instead of returning home to Ireland, he came to Preston in Lancashire, England and married Margaret Smellie, who was born in 1785 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Thereafter, my Collins were all born and lived in Preston. Has anyone any Collins connections from County Derry or County Tyrone in Ireland. Parts of Lissan was in both counties. Anne in Bolton, Lancashire, England.
Hello, this list is all at once busy. My Collins line can only be traced back to Clinton and Warren Counties in Ohio in the early 1830's. Thomas and Sarah Brannon Collins, to be exact. Any and all information is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Joan/Ohio
Collins researchers A good reference for Collins families who moved from the Carolinas into Alabama, Ark and Missouri; also families who moved from Virginal, Penn and New York into Ohio and Illinois. After the Rev War and the War of 1812, soldiers were given scrip for land in the western territories; they exchanged the scrip for land there. http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch/Default.asp? In there you will find definitions of the types of land, acts of congress, movement from Canada, military service reference and more. This may suggest to you other on-line research aides that you can share with the group; I know I need some new ideas. If you have a similar suggestion I'd sure like to hear it. Porter Click

Anyone out there connected to subject Collins (Abraham/Abram born 1824 died 1877 and buried in Brownstown Cemetery in AR - has a new civil war headstone, and I am trying to find out who put it down for him). He came from Alabama to Mississippi to Arkansas (1800's) - he was a farmer in Sevier County, AR in 1860. Thanks. Jackie

I might as well throw my Collins into the mix too! For those researching the Johnson and Floyd Co Collins you may want to check the archives of the Reunion group. There are quite a few Collins researchers there. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/JohnsonCoKYReunion/ Also many Collins photos on the JC Genweb site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyjohnso/johnson.htm Samuel Collins m. ? in NC **Children Valentine Vardy Ambrouse George Thomas ( This family was listed as free black, and free non White until 1870 census when they show as Indian) Valentine m. My John W. Collins was b. 1833 in SC and is listed in Lowndes Co. GA 1860, 1870 . John W. married Mary Giddings (Giddens) and his children are.... Eliza F. Josephine Martha Ann Phebe John T. William J. William J. b 1869 married Mollie Bullard and had children named Jesse, James, Hardy, Garfield, Mollie, Josephine, I know that Hardy and Jesse are common names to Ga and Tampa lines, but I can not connect my line with them at all. We have listed our DNA a Relativegenetics.com Teri
Thought I would post my Collins line, one never knows what may come of it: Charles (Charlie) Lewis Collins (my grandfather) b 04 Mar 1880 Johnson County, KY (we have been told - no proof) d 30 Sep 1954 Jackson County, OH (have his death certificate) According to his first marriage record he is the son of Griffin & Margaret (Milum) Collins of Johnson County, KY. I have found Griffin & Margaret Collins in the 1880 Census of Johnson County, KY however, my grandfather is not listed in the census. Griffin Collins is the son of Griffin Collins Jr who is the son of Griffin Collins Sr (originally from North Carolina) They are listed as "free persons of color" in census records . I have a picture of my grandfather & a picture of the cave explorer, Floyd Collins. The reason I mention this is that both of them have the same ears. Don't know if this means they are related or not. Also saved a picture I found of Floyd Collins' mother I found. Charles Collins' wife's names: 1) Violet Ratliff (daughter of William Riley Ratliff & Juda Ratliff - Henry Ratliff - Silas Ratliff) had a son Elbert Ratliff, born around 1905, died 20 Oct 1969 Charlie & Violet were married 22 January 1906 in Johnson County, KY. 2) Bertha Mae Estep (my grandmother) from Lawrence Co, KY, b 1889, d Jan 1948 They had 5 children & we did find them on the 1930 Census in Jackson Co, Ohio living next door to Budd Collins, his brother. Their children: Homer Joseph Collins b 28 May 1913 d 25 Nov 1936 Howard Wilson Collins b 23 Sep 1915 d 04 Apr 1992 Chester Earl Collins b 28 Dec 1918 d 12 Dec 1992 (My Dad) Thelma Lucile Collins b 04 Mar 1924 Ruth Marie Collins b 12 May 1926 d 07 Aug 2002 3) Laura Collins - he walked out on her after only a few months, went to get a haircut and never returned 4) Elizabeth Scarberry Collins - my "Grandma Lizzie" She was the only grandmother I knew, we would visit her every summer in Jackson, OH Charlie's siblings: Will (William) Conley 1/2 brother b c1879 lived in Ashland, KY in 1954 (he is not the Will Conley on the 1930 census in Ashland, KY) Cora Collins Jackson b c1882 d 10 Jun 1933 She had a son named Tandy Jackson; at the time of her death she lived in Grayson, Carter County, KY Budd Collins b 1890 d Jun 1963 At the time of his death he lived in War, WV Laura Collins b 1891/93 d about 1913 (she was around 22 years old) Had 3 sons: Lee Dale Collins, Leonard Settles and Morris Collins Morris was raised by Uncle Budd after her death I wish I could have my grandfather over for Thanksgiving dinner. However, if he is like his children - no one knows anything about their family! Annie in Minnesota
