    1. Re: [COLLINS] Jacob Collins, Missouri
    2. A response to the note. That is the Mary "Polly" Collins. Even though it says widowed I believe it was either a mistake or she claimed he was dead for some other reason. My grandmother recalled her father in law(Francis Marion) talking about America and Vandalia. She also said there was a daughter named Arizona, but not sure if she had died as a child or may have actually been a name that Vandalia had been called by. ---- Roger Collins <rcoll@bellsouth.net> wrote: > Hi, > > This is not my Collins line, but I thought I would take a look. > > Starting with the 1900 census Jacob is head of household living with his > son Marion in Shannon County, Missouri. 2. Wow! I definitely appreciate all the work and research you did. That is alot to digest. The Mary Collins that he married before Rachel Duty was, I believe, also the child of Aaron Collins...or at least an Aaron Collins. Thank you so much. I'll start looking at Jaernigan Collins. ---- Roger Collins <rcoll@bellsouth.net> wrote: > Hi, > > This is not my Collins line, but I thought I would take a look. > > Starting with the 1900 census Jacob is head of household living with his > son Marion in Shannon County, Missouri. 1. Re: [COLLINS] Jacob Collins, Missouri
    2. Roger Collins
    3. Hi, This is not my Collins line, but I thought I would take a look. Starting with the 1900 census Jacob is head of household living with his son Marion in Shannon County, Missouri. He gives his birth as Oct. 1853 (but earlier census records list him as born in the 1840s). He is divorced. His children with him are unmarried. 1900 Census: Missouri, Shannon County, Winona Township Collins, Jacob (Oct 1853, age 46) Mo Ind Ind ----Marion (son) (March 1878, age 22) Ark Mo Ark ----Aaron (son) (Nov. 1880, age 19) Ark Mo Ark ----Ellen (dgtr) (May 1882, age 17) Ark Mo Ark ----Sarah (dgtr) (April 1885, age 15) Ark Mo Ark I found online the death certificate for Francis Marion Collins (born March 31, 1879, Arkansas; died Dec. 26, 1938, Birch Tree, Shannon County, Missouri). It states that his father was Jacob Collins. Missouri Digital Heritage can be found at: http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/ =============== Following that lead, I looked in the 1880 census for Arkansas and found Francis Marion in the household of Jacob and Rachel Collins in Fulton County, Arkansas: 1880 Census: Arkansas, Fulton County, Myatt Township Coolins, John 40 Mo Ind Ind Rudah 29 Mo Mo Ind Alexander 14 Ark Mo Mo Martha B. 7 ditto Mary Ann 4 Joseph 2 Rose 7mo Henson, Milly (sister) 37 Mo -- Ind Dwelling 63 Collins, Joseph 22 Mo Ill -- laborer Melissia 18 Mo -- -- Dwelling 64 Collins, Jacob 34 Ind Ind Ind Farmer (Born ca. 1846) Rachal 34 Ark Mo Ind James W. 13 Ark Mo Ind Eliza J. 11 Ark Mo Ind Malindia 9 Ark Mo Ind Nancy J. 6 Ark Mo Ind Francis M. 2 Ark Mo Ind ============== I found an Arkansas marriage index that states that Jacob Collins and Mrs. Rachel Jones were married May 12, 1877, in Lawrence County, Arkansas. So it would appear that Rachel would be Francis Marion's mother. I also find in that marriage index where Rachel Duty married Mathew Jones on Dec. 26, 1866, in Lawrence County, Arkansas. The children (James W., Eliza J., Malindia, and Nancy J. could possibly be her children from the Jones marriage. It would not seem that they could be Jacob's children from his marriage to Mary, because those children are found in the 1880 census for Douglas County, Missouri, in the household of "Polly" Collins: 1880 Census: Missouri, Douglas County, Richland Township (ED # 30) Collins, Polly (age 35) Missouri / Indiana / Indiana ----William (age 14) Mo Mo Mo ----Vandalia (age 10) Mo Mo Mo ----Amerian E. (age 8) Mo Mo Mo NOTE: Is "Polly" Jacob's first wife Mary? Here "Polly" is listed as "widowed" (If she were divorced, the census taker would write a "D" in the designated column.) ============ Tracking back to the 1870 census, we find Jacob and Mary Collins in Texas County, Missouri: 1870 Census: Missouri, Texas County, Wood and Richland (PO: Houston) Dwelling 77 Collins, Jacob 21 Mo (Born ca. 1849) Mary 24 Mo William 4 Mo Vandaly 2mo Mo ================ This is the earliest entry I can find for "Jacob Collins." But going back to the 1880 census in Arkansas, he is living near a John Collins (written as "Coolins"). There we have the following: John Collins (b. ca. 1840 Mo/Ind/Ind) Millie Collins Henson (his sister) (b. ca. 1843, Mo/--/Ind) Joseph Collins (b. ca. 1858 Mo / Ill / --- and Jacob Collins (b. ca. 1846 Ind / Ind / Ind) Going back to the 1850 census to look for these people, we finally zero in on the household of Aaron Collins in Ozark County, Missouri. (Incidentally, there are a total of three Aaron Collinses on the same census page. 1850 Census: Missouri, Ozark County Collins, Aaron (age 39, Kentucky) ----Ann (age 37, Ky) ----Mary (age 17, Ind) ----Rachel (age 15, Ind) ----Mahala (age 13, Mo) ----Luanda (age 11, Mo) ----JOHN (age 9, Mo) ----MILLEY (age 7, Mo) ----JAERNIGAN (age 5, Mo) ----Timothy (age 1, Mo) One possibility is that "Jaernigan" is Jacob. (Jaernigan (Jarnigan) is a surname, but it would be used as a given name at times.) The John and Milley here would seem to be the same who turn up in Fulton County, Arkansas, in 1880. Also note, that while Aaron Collins states in the census he was born in Kentucky, his oldest children were born in Indiana. So it's possible (if Aaron were his father) that in later years Jacob could think his parents came from Indiana. ================= Following Aaron's household to the 1860 census, they have now moved to Douglas County, Missouri. The "JOSEPH" in dwelling 354 could be the Joseph in Fulton County, Arkansas in 1880. 1. [COLLINS] Samuel Collins of Shoe Cove and Shoal Bay, Newfoundland
    2. Kimberly Ryan
    3. I'm looking for information about Samuel Collins (especially parents and siblings), of Shoe Cove and Shoal Bay, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland. This Samuel Collins was married to Elizabeth (believed to be Elizabeth Delilah Wilkins, b 1864 on Cobbler's Island, daughter of Robert Wilkins of Bridport, Dorset, England and Leah Jane Roberts) and had the following children in Shoe Cove: * William, b.1883 * Stanley, b.1884, d. 1948 (apparently never married) * Esther, b. abt. 1886, m. Arthur Collins (b. 1885 in Shoe Cove) * Robert Samuel, b. abt, 1887, m. Naomi Collins (b. 1894 in Hare Bay), d. 1964 * Eunice, b.1892, m. Jacob Hounsell (b. abt. 1887 on Pinchard's Island), d. 1955 Shoal Bay (aka Wellington aka Dover) was settled by Collinses in the early 1890s. Samuel and Elizabeth had the following children in Shoal Bay: * David Garfield (known as Garfield), b. 1894, m. Elizabeth Price (b. abt. 1898 in Trinity Bay, d. 1921) and Lily B. Ward (b. abt. 1903 in Gambo), d. bet. 1936-1945 * Rosanna, b. 1896, m. Henry H. Saunders (b. abt. 1893 on Gooseberry island) Samuel seems to marry a second time to a Fanny/Franie (b. abt. 1880 on Fair Island). (Stanley is listed as Fanny's step-son in the 1935 and 1945 censuses of Wellington. All the children - except William - appear in the 1935 and/or 1945 censuses of either Wellington or the neighbouring community of Hare Bay). Samuel appears in 1898 and 1904 business directories for Shoal Bay, but not in either of the 1935 or 1945 censuses. Thank you.

    1. Re: [COLLINS] Jacob Collins, Missouri
    2. I was thinking a bit more about your response post. I believe that Mary was the daughter of Aaron "Arn" Collins and Elizabeth. I am thinking, though I have no proof, that Jacob may have been the son of Harmon Collins. This would make his first wife, Mary, his cousin. It is all just assumption though on my part as I still believe that Jacob had gone by a different first name. I have been looking through various census throughout Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky for an unaccounted for Collins but cannot seem to find one. The only other conclusion I can come up with besides the fact that he may have been unaccounted for somehow is that he was adopted. The census he shows up in Texas County, MO it shows his mother and father's birthplace as Indiana. Other census from Missouri it shows his parents as being born in Missouri. 3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Flora J. COLLINS of Port Henry, New York. The photograph is dated 15 June 1892 and was taken in Mt. Vernon, IA. In addition to Flora's name and hometown, someone has also written "Woodside" and "Birdenia GEARHART" on the back of the photograph. Flora appears to be in her teens or 20's at the time the photograph was taken. 2. None of those names look familiar to me but I'm sure there is a relationship somewhere at some point. From my readings and looking at other people's research through rootsweb and such the Collins have definitely moved around alot. They've also left descendants behind almost everywhere they have been. They seemed to have migrated in large groups. ---- "joycesamples tds.net" <joycesamples@tds.net> wrote: > Re: vol. 6 issue 11 > I have Edward Collins married Eleanor Fairbern in 1790 in Virginia > Their son Lewis R. 1. Re: [COLLINS] Jacob Collins, Missouri
    2. Sure thing. It has been a difficult road for sure. Most of my Collins relatives live currently in Birch Tree, Missouri and surrounding parts. I tried going through the various census. Here is a bit more information accodring to my grandmother's notes. He lived with his son in Arkansas up until his death in 1925. My grandmother says that her husband (Jacob Calvin Collins) says that he lived with his son Francis Marion Collins until his death, but others have said that he lived with his son Aaron. Through his first marriage to Mary Collins he had America Collins, William Collins and Vandalia Collins(my grandmother also mentioned an Arizona Collins though I'm not sure if she died young or if she may actually have been Vandalia, sometimes spelled Vandaly). His second marriage to Rachel Duty he had Francis Marion, Ellen Beauty, Aaron and Sarah Jane. He married Rachel Duty after her first husband, Madison "Matt" Jones died. It may also be important to note that in 1918 many of this line of Collins was in the Pocahontas, Arkansas area...during the Spanish Influenza Epidemic. My great grandmother, Ida Elvina(sometimes listed Melvina)Jones and her daughter Dorothy Collins passed away in 1918 because of this. Sorry to ramble on and thanks for any help. ---- Jackie Foster <jandbill@aol.com> wrote: > > 1870 census Texas County, MO has Jacob, age 21, and Mary, age 24, living next door to Elizabeth Collins age 60 and son Isaah age 20...... 1. Re: [COLLINS] Jacob Collins, Missouri
    2. My great-great-granduncle's name was Francis Marion Collins, but he was born 19 Nov 1834 in Warren County, MO, little young to be Jacob's father. His parents were Smith Collins, 1804 VA - 1870 OR, and Eliza Emily Wyatt, 1812 KY - 1872 OR. Smith's parents were George Collins, c1779 VA - 1845 MO, and Jane Eddings, c1780 VA - 1854 MO. George's parents were William Collins, born (year unknown) in VA and died after 1825 in VA, and Jane Blakely, probably born and died in VA. William fought in the Revolutionary War, so he may have been born mid-1850s. William Collins' father was English. My Francis Marion Collins emigrated to Oregon in 1846 with his parents and siblings, and later married Martha Elizabeth Blake, born 1839 MO. They had at least 2 children, Blanch and Bertha. (Francis is the brother of my great-great-grandmother, Jane Elizabeth Collins Nealy.) I have not done much research to the side on my Collins line and I have not found a Jacob, Isaiah, David (1750) or Harmon in my line so far. I do have a David Crockett Collins, 1845 MO - 1875 OR, and a D. C. Collins, born 1876, and D. J. Collins, born 1873. D.C. and D. J. may have been named after their father, Douglas Wyatt Collins, who was named after his grandfather. In my genealogy program notes for William, I have a very short reference to his brother Richard. I may have more information not posted, but I can't access it right now. However, Warren County, where my George Collins and family settled after moving from Virginia in the early 1800s, is only about 100 miles north of Winona, MO. I believe that some of my Collins (George's offspring?) moved south of Warren County, but, again, I can't lay my hands on the papers with that information. (I'm still trying to get my 30+ years of research organized, scanned and posted to my computer program!) Do you know if your Collins line came from Virginia? If so, perhaps we have a connection from there, between your David and my William. 2. Shelley, Emily Arathusa (Collins) Wells is my great-grandaunt. She and my great-grandmother, Jane Elizabeth (Collins) Nealy are sisters, daughters of Smith and Eliza Emily (Wyatt) Collins. I haven't researched Emily's line much yet, so receiving your email through the Collins RW bulletin board is great! You’ve provided so much information on Richard’s and Emily’s family. I would like to have a copy of the photograph for my picture files, but do not need the original since you’ll probably be contacted by closer relatives. I tried to find your message on RootsWeb Collins message board, but no luck, so I hope you’ll get this reply through email. Thank you! However, just for the record of checking under every rock, check out Sparta, White County, Tennessee and see if a John Anderson Collins shows up there. John was a name that appeared a lot in that area and the Anderson's and Collins are everywhere. Anderson could have been a last name of a relative. -----Original Message----- From: Keith & Jacqui <jacthestamper@yahoo.com> To: COLLINS <COLLINS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sun, Feb 13, 2011 5:29 pm Subject: [COLLINS] 2nd Great Grandfather is missing. Can you help find him? My 2nd great grandfather is John Anderson Collins born somewhere between 1846 and 1863. Some of our family say 1846 in Tennessee (nashville area?) others say 1863 in Missouri (Hannibal area?). All agree he was an orphan. Rumor has it he had 2 sisters and maybe 1 brother. One story says one day his father was walking to town and was conscripted into the army. No one knows which side or what happened to him. His name may have been William. John married Almeda Camp in Cedar CO, MO on 8 March 1877. Family tradition says that she too was an orphan. John died 21 April 1911, Louisburg, Kansas. I am totally stuck.
