I did not have a copy of Thomas Kidd's will, and I'm so pleased that you sent it. It contains some good information--names I didn't know before. I see that Reiley transcribed it; do you know where he read it? (maybe he is on the list and will respond) Thanks so very much for sharing! 3. My husband's family were both mostly Collins and Biggs.  The families were intertwined.  Many yrs ago I was studying the Melungeon families and both names were on the list along with my family name of Denhams.  Howard's Collins' were from VA.  The Biggs I haven't found out of Ohio yet and my Denhams came from England to New England and on to KY and Ohio.  It is a very interesting research.  My daughter had many illnesses as she grew up.  Fibromyalgia, Bi-polar, migraines, hib disease.  She passed away at age 35.  My husband's Collins family had an Am. Indian named Melinda Smith.  She was from Ohio.  This is all I was ever able to find.  Hope you find what you are searching for.  If I can be of help, let me know. 2. If you go to this link and scroll down to picosearch and type in Collins a number of pages will come up. http://www.historical-melungeons.com/index.html Particlularly interesting are the articles by Dromgoole There is, perhaps, no more satisfactory method of illustrating this peculiar race, it's origin and blood, than by the familiar tree. Old Vardy Collins, then, must be regarded as the body, or main stem, in this state, at all events. It is only of very late years the Melungeons have been classed as families. Originally they were tribes, afterward clans and at last families. From Old Vardy the first tribe took it's first name Collins. Others who followed Vardy took the Collins name also. Old Benjamin Collins, one of the pioneers, was older than Vardy, but came to Tennessee a trifle later. He had quite a large family of children, among them Edmond, Mileyton, Marler, Harry, Andrew, Zeke, Jordon. From Jordan Collins descended Calloway Collins who is still living today and from whom I obtained some valuable information. But.....go back a step. Benjamin Collins was known as old Ben, and became the head of the Ben's tribe. Old Solomon Collins was the head of Sol's tribe. The race was increasing so rapidly, by emigration and otherwise, that it became necessary to adopt other names than Collins. They fell ,curiously enough, upon the first or Christian name of the head of a large family connection or tribe. Emigrants arriving attached themselves as they chose to the several tribes. After a while, with an eye to brevity, doubtless, the word "tribe" was dropped from ordinary, everyday use. The "Bens" the "Sols" meant the Ben and Sols Tribes. It appeared that no tribe was ever called for Old Vary, although as long as he lived he was recognized as head and leader of the entire people. http://www.historical-melungeons.com/wad.html -----Original Message----- From: Donna B <kydjcb@yahoo.com> To: collins <collins@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wed, Sep 14, 2011 4:30 pm Subject: Re: [COLLINS] Melungeon Does anyone have information on the Benjamin line? There is no proof that I have found to date that shows any of these Collins families 'mated' with slaves, were freed, runaway, etc. One line appears to descend from the line out of Louisa Co., Va., to Orange Co., Wilkes, Rowan, NC and then to East Tennessee. Another line which may be considered Melungeon are the Thomas and George found in the 1794 petition in Georgetown, or Marion Co., SC. They may be the same Collins family found in Wilson Co., or Bells Bend, Tenn. Another line appears to be Benjamin Collins, unrelated to the Virginia Collins line that also appears in East Tennessee. If you scroll down this page to PICOSEARCH and type in Collins there is a lot of info http://www.historical-melungeons.com/index.html Joanne -----Original Message----- From: rtcollins <rtcollins@cox.net> To: Collins List <Collins-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wed, Sep 14, 2011 1:13 am Subject: [COLLINS] Melungeon I have a question I was wondering if anyone has an answer to. After doing much esearch I am still confused about which lines are considered Melungeon and hich lines are not. Are the descendants of Vardy the only Melungeons or are all he Collins that came from Virginia in the 1700's, through North Carolina onsidered Melungeons as well? I've also seen lists by Paul Heineg with Collins from North Carolina listed as ulatto and am wondering if these are the same Collins from Virginia. Thanks for any clarification. 3. They are not all from the same line. The Melungeon are a separate and distinct family(s) line. It isn't known for sure where the "Melungeon" part came into the Collins line. DNA has proven it was not a distant sailor from Spain/Italy/where ever that was ship wrecked. I have traced my particular Collins line to the Chesapeake Bay area in the early 1700s. This particular line of the Collins family seems to have come from England. Some of this family did go south into the Carolinas. I have no doubt there were other Collins lines that immigrated directly to the Carolinas. As for the mulatto listing many of the Collins families owned slaves and some had no qualms mating with one of the female slaves. Slaves often took the name of their "master" when they were set free. Collins is a very common name and they cannot all be lumped into one big group. I have a question I was wondering if anyone has an answer to. After doing much research I am still confused about which lines are considered Melungeon and which lines are not. Are the descendants of Vardy the only Melungeon or are all the Collins that came from Virginia in the 1700's, through North Carolina considered Melungeons as well? 3. Don, Thank you for sharing that bit of English history with everyone on the Collins name. My Mitchell Collins is known to come from Northern Ireland. Mitchell Collins b. Nov 1823 and immigrated Oct 1859 to New York and spent several years working in the oil fields of Pennsylvania. From there he moved to the growing, bustling city of Clinton, Clinton Co. Iowa, on the Mississippi River, with two friends: Prentice Holmes and Jerome Scofield who were witnesses when Mitchell became naturalized 1876. Mitchell married Ann Eliz. Gravenor 1871 (b. Messingham, Lincs Co.) and had four children before moving in 1881 to the village of Waltham, North Tama Co., Iowa where he farmed and lived a quiet life. Mitchell never left a clue to which County he came. I'm leaning toward Antrim where other families living near him, also immigrated to Tama County, Iowa. Bonnie

    3. I found the following post somewhere online, but can't find who made the post. Does anyone have the email address for this lady? Hello to every Collins out there! I have been tracing my Family Tree and have got back to 1414! I live in England and still only live a couple of miles away from were my Ancestors were at this time! The meaning of our surname Collins literally means 'Son of Nicholas', originally it would have been Nicholason, then Colason, Colynson, Colinson, Collaines, and then eventually Collins! (all names I have found within my own family tree) The origin is Viking! - Danish Viking to be exact and then of course becoming English, which is very apt for me because I live in the shire given to the Vikings back in the 900's which they called the Danelaw and this area, including my village is Viking! There is still a high concentration of Collins' in Devon (the south of England). Back in the 1700's the Devonshire Miners were encouraged to go to Ireland to mine, hence the name becoming widespread in that area. Although there was a clan called the O'Coilleain who Anglicized their original name and turned it into Collins. Hope this has been of some help and interest!

    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of W. B. LACY which was taken at the W. S. Gardner Studio in Corvallis, Oregon. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with the young man in the photograph likely in his 20's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone appears to have written the initials "JEA" on the back of the photograph as well. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding the young man in the photograph: William B. LACY was b. Apr 1872 in OR and first married Laura E. COLLINS (b. Aug 1872 in OR) in about 1899 in OR. Census records provide the following information: 1900 census of Corvallis, OR: Wm COLLINS, age 57, born Mar 1843, married 35 years, born MO, parents born VA/KY, a Farmer Mary L. 3. I've been meaning to write but we have been moving to a new home and not much extra time. I was so glad to see Roger wrote to you. He is a fantastic Collins researcher. In fact, he reallly started the ball rolling for dna studies. I believe he still uses Ancestry.com dna which was first Relative finder and then Ancestry bought them as I understand. We have our line on both Ancestry and Familytreedna. Familytreedna is where the Melungeon study started. Hope you are having some more luck with tracing Jacob. I want to give you info on Morgan Co. IN. I need to look at some notes I have but basically many of the men moved there from Knox Co. KY. I'm probably repeating myself! Hopefully, I can send you more tomorrow. I believe that Mary was the aughter of Aaron "Arn" Collins and Elizabeth. I am thinking, though I have no roof, that Jacob may have been the son of Harmon Collins. This would make his irst wife, Mary, his cousin. It is all just assumption though on my part as I till believe that Jacob had gone by a different first name. I have been looking hrough various census throughout Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky for an naccounted for Collins but cannot seem to find one. The only other conclusion I can come up with besides the fact that he may have een unaccounted for somehow is that he was adopted. The census he shows up in exas County, MO it shows his mother and father's birthplace as Indiana. Other ensus from Missouri it shows his parents as being born in Missouri. My great reat grandfather is definitely a tough little monster to figure out. ---- Jackie Foster <jandbill@aol.com> wrote: 1870 census Texas County, MO has Jacob, age 21, and Mary, age 24, living next oor to Elizabeth Collins age 60 and son Isaah age 20...... I am on what seems tio be a very difficult quest. I am searching or nformation on where my great great grandfather Jacob Collins b. 1846-1853 inona, Shannon Co., Missouri came from lineage wise. I know that he was arried o a Mary Collins and later married a Rachel Duty. My great grandfather was rancis Marion Collins. I have a bunch of information gathered from various sources and one is a andwritten note that says that he was the brother of Isaiah Collins(son of armon) and can thus can be traced back to David Collins 1750. However, I do ot ee any brothers of Isaiah with the name of Jacob. This leads me to the onclusion that Jacob is not the first name and may instead be his middle name. Also, would Harmon Collins and previous Collins of that line be considered Melungeon"? As a kid my father always thought we were Irish. Thansk for any elp! 2. I'll bet this is your Collins. I probably have it incorrect, but if his mother was a Garr, it could be he was given her surname. These are my Collins in Newton Co., MS. They used to have a family reunion around Sept 4th. I don't know if they still do. I haven't been in a few years. My father was also a Texas Ranger around 1926. How do you find this info? Grace S.
