Collinses in 1883 List of Calif. Federal Pensioners from Fall 2011 issue, "The California Nugget," published by The California Genealogical Society and Library (Vol. III, Issue 2)(2201 Broadway, Ste. LL2, Oakland, CA 94612-3031)(510-663-1358)(contact@californiaancestors.org)( www.CaliforniaAncestors.org) They published a statewide alphabetized list (covers 1,663 names of federal pensioners in Calif. in 1883) in more than one issue. (There's a printed list organized by county somewhere, and that can be seen, digitized, i guess, on Ancestry. From that list one could learn the cause for the pension and some other info. Alphabetized list can be helpful as a locator.) On p. 29 are some Collinses: Mary P, who was at that time in Orange, Los Angeles County; Benjamin L., Lewis, Mariposa County; Nathan W., San Francisco, San Francisco; and Alphonso C., Red Bluff, Tehama. Hope this helps someone. happy huntin' b

James Madison Collins was a son of John B. Collins of Lauderdale Co. Ms. His line is: James Madison Collins>John B. Collins>Nathaniel Madison Collins>Elisha Collins of Virginia and Kentucky>Joseph Collins of Virginia. Trying to find a living descendant of James Madison Collins. James Madison Collins was b. Jan 10, 1848, in MS. He married Amanda Elizabeth Ethridge and they were the parents of eight children. James Madison was in his mother's household of the 1870 Census of Lauderdale Co., MS. Their first 2 children, girls, were born in MS in 1870 and 1872. Their 3rd child, a girl, was born ca 1874 in Corsicana, TX. That 3rd child died ca 1876 Cleburne, TX. This 3rd child was not in the 1880 Census because she was born after the 1870 Census but died before the 1880 Census was enumerated. Their 4th child, a son, was born at Cleburne, TX in 1876. James M. Collins departed TX and arrived back in MS ca 1876 and had 4 more children. The 1880 Census showed his occupation to be "Farmer", suggesting that he may have farmed in both States during 1880. He eventually joined the Meridian, MS Police Dept., and was killed on Oct. 27, 1888, in the line of duty while trying to break up a gambling ring. If anyone has credible information about the James Madison Collins family they wish to share I would be happy to engage in conversation. Ross Collins 1st cousin twice removed of James M. Collins.
A.G. Collins is a son of John B. Collins of Lauderdale Co. Ms. His line is: AG Collins>John B. Collins>Nathaniel Madison Collins>Elisha Collins of Virginia and Kentucky>Joseph Collins of Virginia(confirmed) with evidence of ancestry to the early Collins's of Virginia who came in the 1600's from Maidstone, Kent England. We have a dna study on "our" Collins family, and generally speaking the haplogroup is I2b1a. We have been interested in relationships to "Collins" in the North East but have never found a "cousin" up there. I've been doing "Collins" genealogy since around 1980 and it has the usual bumps, turns, accuracies, and inaccuracies as do other suname projects. It's my mothers ancestry. Be glad to have conversation if you desire. Better done off this board so we don't bore the other folks. Charles
A.G. Collins was the son of John B. Collins of Lauderdale, County Mississippi. After the Civil War he went to Texas and served for a time in the Texas Rangers. He moved back to Mississippi and married five times, the first three to women with surname of "Stephens/Stevens". He is buried in Newton County, Mississippi. He is to be honored for his service in the Texas Rangers. We would like to know if there are any living descendants of this man, A.G. Collins. (Albert Goodwin Collins) Charles in Texas.
Charles, I don't know of any relationship with A.G., but my father's name was Garrett Collins, and he married my mother, Josephine Goodwin!! Seems strange. My mother came from New York City, born in 1908; Collins born in Hinsdale, Massachusetts, in 1897.
