    1. Research in Search of Ancestry
    2. Ruth A. Collins
    3. In looking through the archives, I discovered that I have answers to others questions but not to my own. My reason for posting this is two-fold. 1) To help others whose ancestors have surfaced during my research; and 2) To see if anybody can help me identify any of these Zachariah so I can weed out some of them. To date several Zachariah's have surfaced that are acknowledged to have been living in the same area during the period 1780-1820. Some of these entries may be applicable to the same person. 1) In about 1945, the Library of the Church of Latter Day Saints reported that a Mrs. Zachariah Collins was born in Montgomery County, Maryland. There is a Zachariah Collins listed in the 1790 census in Montgomery County. Maryland. 2) The "Index of North Carolina Ancestors" published by the North Carolina Genealogical Society, Raleigh, North Carolina, 1981, names Zachariah, Sr. and states that he possibly lived Johnston County, North Carolina and died in Adair County, Kentucky. However, the source of this information is June (Powell) Orton who, after doing more research, is not certain that the Zachariah in Johnston County, North Carolina, is the same person as the Zachariah Collins, Sr. that moved to Adair County, Kentucky. A Zachariah Collins surfaced in the Johnston County taxables during the years 1803, 1805, 1806 and 1807. This information was discovered by S. Keith Collins, Esq. in a rather obscure book, "Johnston County North Carolina Taxables [1874-1820]", Part I, by Weynette Parks Haun. Because Zachariah Collins only surfaces in 1803, 1805, and 1806, at first blush, this appears to fit in with Zachariah, Sr.'s more to Adair County, Kentucky. Unfortunately, the Zachariah Collins (aka Zachariah Collinsworth) who lived in Johnston County, North Carolina, married Wealthy Beaman and moved to Alabama, thus he could not have been the same person as Zachariah, Sr. who moved to Adair County, Kentucky. [Sources: Wendy (Walker, Tim) e-mail: gidget @digtalexp.com; C. T. Collins, Jr.: e-mail ccollins-gulf@worldnet.att.net] 3) In 1780-1784 Zachariah along with William Collins and Henry Collins petitioned the War Department, State of South Carolina, for compensation for a gelding that a Captain Nixon had appropriated for the Revolutionary War effort. This could not have been the Zachariah who moved Adair County, Kentucky, because he was too young during that time frame to have executed a petition. 4) Zachariah married Martha Shilley 8 Apr 1830 in Wilkinson County, Georgia. This could not have been the Zachariah who moved to Adair County, Kentucky, because he was already living in Adair County, Kentucky during that time frame. 5) Zachariah born 1782 received bounty land in Elbert County, Georga in 1789-1793. He later moved to Jackson County, Georgia and married Sarah Palmer prior to 1798. The names of his children are different from the names of the children that lived in Adair County, Kentucky. 6) According to "The Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex, VA 1653-1812" published by the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of Virginia, a Zachariah Collins married Ann Burton in Middlesex, Virginia on December 1, 1797, Henry Hefferman, rector of Chrish Church (Episcopal) officiating. 7) An 18 year old Zachariah enlisted in artillery for 1 yr, 6 mo in April 1780. His residence was Albermarle, Virginia and he is recorded in the 1790 census in Albermarle County. 8) Zachariah enlisted in the Revolutionary War 1 Sep 1780 in Chesterfield County, Virginia. 9) Zachariah is acknowledged by the DAR as having been a private in the Seventh Virginia Regiment, Continental Line. 10) Zachariah Collins served in the War of 1812 in King and Queen County, Virginia. 11) James Willard Scott wrote a book entitled "The Scott Family" which is an allied family of Zachariah Collins, Sr. In this book, James wrote that Zachariah Collins, Sr. is the son of Josiah Collins II, the hunter and founder of Lexington. The following is his version of Zachariah Collins, Sr.'s heritage: Josiah Collins I, was born in England. He sold everything he owned in Somerset, England, and immigrated to America in the mid 1700's, settling in Virginia. Josiah's wife chose to stay in England and did not come to America. Josiah I purchased 60,000 acres of land in the Dismal Swamp area of North Carolina. With the help of 120 slaves, Josiah I build a fine home (mansion), which was still standing a few years ago. He named his plantation the Somerset Place. Josiah I's slaves dug channels by hand trying, without success, to drain the swamp. He also raised hemp from which he made lines for sea going vessels. Josiah Collins II was born circa 1739/1740. He stayed in England with his mother and was educated there. When he came to America, Josiah II wanted no part of farming, the plantation, factory life or slavery. This outraged Josiah I and he disowned him. Josiah I was heard to say that the worst thing he ever did was to give his son an education. When Josiah I died, Josiah II was not named in his will. Josiah II was well enough educated to be a school master, but he chose to live on what was then the frontier and moved to a small outpost on the edge of civilization in Yadkin Valley, North Carolina. Beyond that was Indian territory. Josiah II probably married a full-blooded Indian. In the 1770's, when Daniel Boone was hired by the Spotsylvania Corporation (a group of investors from Fredericksburg, Virginia) to open the wilderness trail into Kentucky, Josiah II was hired by the corporation to document the events as they occurred. Josiah II lived in Boonesborough, Kentucky in 1778. At that time, Kentucky was "Indian" land, although it was claimed by Virginia as a county. The week long siege on Fort Boonesborough occurred in Sep 1778 and the fort was attacked by 400 Indians and British Soldiers. It lasted seven days and was said to be the last battle of the American Revolution. Josiah II wrote down the conversation between Daniel Boone and an Indian Chief named Black Fish. When pressed for documentation, James Willard Scott couldn't recall where he had obtained this information. Rev. G. Willard Collins, my father and a descendant of Zachariah Collins, Sr., reported that Zachariah was born in Virginia or maybe England. He was educated in England and later came to America. Zachariah, his wife, mother, father and son, left North Carolina to move to Kentucky by covered wagon to make a new life for themselves in the new frontier. Zachariah's father, Josiah, and his mother died while making the trip from North Carolina to Kentucky and were buried somewhere along the way. Zachariah and his family settled on the convergence of Dry Creek and Cabin Fork Creek. When he arrived in Kentucky, he farmed. for a living. Unfortunately, Rev. Willard doesn't recall where he obtained this information; therefore one must question whether somehow James Willard Scott's information filtered down to him. As a result of two separate and independent reports that Zachariah Collins, Sr. was the son of Josiah Collins, extensive research had been performed to determine if there is documentary proof. Although pieces of the story written by James Willard Scott can be substantiated, most of the information conflicts with the preponderance of evidence. To date, no record has been located establishing that Josiah Collins, the hunter and founder of Lexington, Kentucky had a son named Zachariah. Charles A. Stephens, a descendant of Josiah's younger brother, Elisha Collins, has spent several years researching the ancestry of Josiah Collins, the hunter and founder of Lexington, Kentucky. His research names Joseph and Lucy (Marchbanks) Collins as the parents of Josiah. Lucy (Marchbanks) Collins died circa 1790 and released her dower on property back in Halifax, Virginia, from her invalid state in Woodford County, Kentucky. Joseph Collins later gave, for love and affection, land to his son, Joel. However, Mr. Stephens would not rule out the possibility that Josiah had a son named Zachariah: "Your Zachariah could very well be the offspring of Josiah. He married rather late for those days. He may have had a marriage before Jurette Bohannon. What would one expect of someone who was surely capable of fathering an offspring in 1782--he would have been 25 years old... he didn't marry Jurette until he was 34 years old. Of course he was celibate all that time, being the good old ex Quaker he probably was!!!" Recently Richard Prewitt of Des Moines, Iowa, published a book, "The Collins Book, Joseph Collins and Lucy Marchbanks, Their Descendants." In this book, he names Josiah, the hunter and founder of Lexington, as a son of Joseph and Lucy. Rev. Dabeny Shane, a Presbyterian missionary interviewed Josiah Collins: "In the case of Josiah Collins, Shane said that he took down 'Mr. Collins' own language; he being able to dictate very deliberately, and at this same time correctly. " [Source: "Lexington 1779, Pioneer Kentucky as described by Early Settlers" by Bettye Lee Mastin] When later tested in a court of law, Collins' account was proven to be accurate: "Collins' remarkable memory in regard to Lexington withstands a determined assault made in 1919 by a distinguished lawyer, Judge Samuel M. Wilson of Lexington. Stating that Collins' remarks were reliable, 'but that it would be altogether exceptional if all of his statements were found free from error..." [Id.] "HE WENT WITH HARROD WEST OF THE MISSIPPI Not many survived to old age who knew as much about Kentucky in its infancy as did Josiah Collins. Born in 1757, coming west in 1778, waiting to marry until he was almost 35, Collins because of his long bachelorhood may have been freer than most from the grim, all-absorbing work of clearing the forest. His was a portable trade: As a single man, he could serve as a skilled hunter, at times with the army with shich he marched, at other times killing game for surveyors hunting a more illusive quarry, previously unclaimed land." [Source: Shane Interview with Josiah Collins, Lyman C. Draper Collection, Wisconsin Historical Society, Madison] "THE SIEGE AT BOONESBOROUGH I was well acquainted with a number that were in Boonesborough at the time of the siege... Blackfish came to the top of a hill opposite Boonesborough and they called to see Boone... Boone and Maj. William Bailey Smith went out. Blackfish said to Boone, 'Well, Boone, what made you run away from me?' "Why, because I wanted to see my wife and children." "Well, you needn't have run away if you'd asked me, I'd let you come.' 'Well, Boone, I have come to take your fort. If you will surrender, I will take you all to Chillicothe, and you shall be treated well. If not, I will put all the other prisoners to death and reserve the young squaws for wifes.'... Boone told him they had determined to defend the fort to the last..." [Id.] "THE TREATY WAS COMMENCED THE NEXT DAY The treaty was commenced the next day in a lick where there was a salt spring and a fresh spring that came out near together about 60 yards from the fort... After they had signed the treaty, Blackfish said it was a custom with the Shawnees when they made a treaty for the two of them to take a white man's hand to shake hands strong and to make a strong and firm peace..." [Id.] Josiah's will dated 30 Sep 1845 is on file with the Clerk's office in Owingsville, Bath County, Kentucky. [Book 3, p. 64] His children are identified as: 1) Willis; 2) Bohannon; 3) Fielding; 4) Elizabeth; 5) Perlina; and 6) G. C. Jeanetta. It appears that James Willard Scott may have been blending the family of Josiah Collins I from Edenton, North Carolina with the family of Josiah Collins, the hunter and founder of Lexington. Josiahi I lived in Chowan County, North Carolina. [State Census of North Carolina 1784-17887; 1790; and 1800] The Chowan precinct is located on the West side of Cuscoponung River in the middle of a great and Dismal Swamp, it being an Island Invironed with a Swamp commonly called Heron Island. [Source: "Province of North Carolina 1663-1729"] Josiah Collins I, a native of Ilminster, Somerset County, England, settled in Edenton, North Carolina, in the mid-eighteenth century and became a prosperous planter. ["The family of Dr. Matthew Page of Edenton, North Carolina" by John Insley Coddinton] A Summons was issued to the Sheriff of Chowan County, North Carolina, to the Estate of Josiah Collins I, in the hands of Josiah Collins II, his Executor, for a Petition for a Ditch dated 2 Sep 1810. [Source: Certified copy of Summons] Josiah I bequeathed by Will parcels of land in Washington and Tyrrell, a lifetime estate to his son, Josiah II, with the estate passing to the seven children of Josiah II, upon his death. Children of Josiah Collins II were: 1) Hugh Williamson Collins; 2) John Davis Collins; 3) Mary Matilda Collins; and 4) Josiah Collins III [Source: Petition to Court by heirs of Josiah Collins II dated Feb 1840, Washington County, VA] According to Miss Elizabeth Van Moore, of Edenton: "Josiah Collins II promised to build 'the finest house on King Street' in Edenton for Dr. Matthew Pate at the time of his marriage to Mary Matilda Collins in 1829, if the very Virginian Dr. Page would consent to live in North Carolina." ["The family of Dr. Matthew Page of Edenton, North Carolina" by John Insley Coddinton] There are interesting descriptioins of other activities of Josiah Collins II in Guion Griffis Johnson's "Ante-Bellum North Carolina" (Chapel Hill, 1937), pp. 485, 488, 528. Josiah II was the most conspicuous planter of the ante-bellum period in Chowan County, who raised corn as his main crop, and he abondoned the cultivation of rice in favor of corn on account of the prevalence of malaria among slaves on rice plantations. His plantation, named the Somerset Place after his father's native country in England, was part of what was originally Scuppernong Swamp in Chowan County, which Collins had drained and where he had built granaries and grist mills. Because of the inconsistencies of Mr. Scott's version of Zachariah Collins, Sr.'s ancestry when compared with documentary evidence combined with the fact that James Willard Scott was unable to provide any documentation in support of his position, one must highly question his allegation that Zachariah Collins, Sr. was the son of Josiah Collins, the hunter and founder of Lexington, Kentucky. 12) A Zachariah Collins surfaces in the Parrish Family History which might establish Zachariah, Sr.'s heritage. At this time enough information has not been located to establish conclusively that this is the same Zacharah as the Zachariah who moved to Adair County, Kentucky. There are factors which point toward the possibility that the two Zachariahs are same individual: (1) An allied family, the Hadleys, of the Zachariah Collins who moved to Adair County, Kentucky, lived in Maryland during this time frame; (2) The Zachariah Collins who lived in Maryland had a sister named Elizabeth (who married Richard Rolland Lee and they were ancestors of Robert E. Lee) had a child born in 1805 (Judge Collins Lee); the first child was born to the Zachariah Collins who moved to Adair County, Kentucky (Aaron Collins) was born in 1807; (3) When Zachariah Collins moved to Adair County, Kentucky, he purchased his first parcel of real property from William Hadley for little, if any monetary consideration; and (4) The Hadley Family who lived in Maryland were Quakers; the father of the Zachariah Collins, Stephen Collins, was married at a Quaker meeting. This possibility is still being explored. Direct ancestors of the Zachariah Collins who lived in Maryland are: A) Zachariah Collins; B) Stephen Collins and Mary (Parrish) Collins]; C) Zaccheus Collins and Elizabeth (Sawyer) Collins; D) Samuel Collins and Rebecca Hussey; D) John Collins and Abigail Collins; and E) Henry Collins and Ann Collins. HENRY COLLINS was born 1606 in Ireland and died 20 Feb 1687 in Essex County, Massachusetts. He married Ann who was born 1604 and died 29 Sep 1691 in Essex County, Massachusetts. With their three children and five servants, Henry, a "Starch Maker" and Ann embarked 17 Jun 1635 on the ship "Abigail" from England to Lynn, Massachusetts. The family settled in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, where Henry homesteaded 800 acres of land and became a plantation owner. He was a member of the Salem Court, a selectman, in 1639. After they moved to America, Henry and Ann had two additional children. JOHN COLLINS was born 1632 in England and died 1679 while shipwrecked at sea. John married Abigail Johnson in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts. Abigail was born about 1631; the daughter of Richard and Alice Johnson. She married 2) Thomas Farrar 3 Mar 1681. ZACCHEUS COLLINS was born 28 Mar 1689/1698 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts and died 7 Jan 1723 in Newbury, Essex County, Massachusetts. He married Elizabeth Sawyer 7 Jan 1722/1723 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts. Elizabeth was born 26 Jun 1703 in Newbury, Essex Bounty, Massachusetts; the daughter of Stephen or Steven and Ann (Titcombe) Sawyer. SAMUEL COLLINS was born 19 Mar 1659 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts and died 14 Feb 1707. He married Rebeccah Hussey 16 Aug 1695 in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Rebecca was born 10 Mar 1662 in Hampton, Rockingham County, Massachusetts; the daughter of John and Rebecca (Perkins) Hussey. She died 4 Apr 1739 in Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts. STEPHEN COLLINS was born 18 Aug 1733 and died 1794. He married Mary Parrish 8 Jan 1761 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the "Philadelphia Meeting" (Quakers). She had removed to Philadelphia to live with her brother, Robert. Mary was born 8 Jun 1738; the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Roberts) Parrish. Stephen did patriotic service during the Revolutionary War in Pennsylvania. ZACHARIAH COLLINS,(son of Stephen and Mary (Parrish) Collins) married Sally Marshall. 1. Dr. John Collins, Athens, TX
    2. John M. Collins
    3. Hello All: I have a John Collins (1811-1890), b. Cookstown, Co. Tyrone, Ire., a doctor of medicine. He and two brothers came to Crockett, Houston Co., TX in 1839. He died at Athens, Henderson Co., TX and is buried there. Collins married 1st a daughter of Ed Wingate [one of the defenders at Goliad, TX I am told]. She died young, possibly in her first pregnancy or birth and likely at Crockett. No children have been identified as being of this marriage. Collins married 2nd but wife's name not known. From the article I have, I get the impression that he was still living in Crockett at the time. Collins was both a doctor and a merchant in Crockett to about 1850 when he moved to Athens and continued as doctor and merchant and dabbled in politics. He is said to have raised a large family in Athens. Of that family, these are the only details that I know about. - dau. married Judge Gooch, for many years Dist. Judge for 3rd Judicial Dist. - son W.E. Collins, mgr Padgitt Bros. Co., lived Dallas in 1943. - son James Thomas (known as Jim Tom) This Collins family was of the merchant/professional, non-conformist class in Ireland where they were of the Presbyterian faith. Another cousin, also from Cookstown, living in Crockett at the same time, continued as a Presbyterian. 1. COLLINS; Anson County, NC; 1700's
    2. JamieW
    3. I am looking for any Collins who resided in or near Anson County around 1720 or 1730. My ancestor was born in 1728, George Collins. He bought land in Anson County in 1764.....this is the earliest record I have of him. By a tax exemption of 1788 due to his age of 60 years, I have come up with the birth year of 1728...this could be off I know. George lived in the part of Anson that became Richmond County in 1779. In 1779, he was listed in Richmond County's first tax list as owning 160 acres. He lived there until about 1800....he moved to South Carolina shortly before then I believe. There are too many descendant names to mention here as the years went by, but I will be happy to exchange information with possible connections anytime. If you have any Collins in or around Anson/Richmond County in the 1700's and/or early 1800's, please email me so we can compare notes and look for connections! Happy Holidays!!! Sincerely searching, JamieW

    3. My gr. grandmother was Mary Evelyn Collins (4 Sep 1860-8 Sep 1889), who married James Augustus PAGE (1858-1918). They lived in Collin County TX, and she died at Rowlett TX. She had a number of children, but died young, and no one seems to know who her parents were. Her husband married again, and had a total of 20 children - and somehow Evelyn's family information got lost. Any clues would be appreciated. Anelle McCarty Kloski
