    3. Looking for ancestors from Ruthefford/Wilson Co, Tn area and where ever they came from. My grandmother was Katie Leath Collins, b Oct 1898 in Pottawattomie Co., Ok Territory and she died in 1937 at Ada, Ok. She had married in Oct 1917 to Arthur L. Walker (b Jan 1897 in Ok Terr) who died in 1963 at Nicoma Park, Ok. Katie's parents were Squire "Buck" Collins (believed to be William James Collins) who was born circa 1862 in TN and died circa 1899 in Indian Territory. Katie's mother was Roxana S.L. Archer(b Aug 1861 TN) and died circa 1920 (Ada, OK?). Her parents were michael E.J.Archer (b circa 1830 TN?) and died ? and Cassalana Nickens b circa 1831 Tn d ? Michael's father was Jacob ? and Cassalana's parents were James Nickens and Sally (?). Roxana married a Charles Rhodes/Rohdes in 1907 Asher, Oklahoma. He was lost after the 1910 Census. Roxana's exact death date and location is not know but my grandfather did file for her burial in 1920 at Ada, Ok. The record from the funderal home did not list a death date or location of burial. The Archer/Collins/Nickens families were listed as Mulatto/Black/white in census reports and are believed to be Melungeons or of Indian descent. Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated. Dewey in Texas lookin for Collins(Collens)/Archer(Arche-Archy-...)/Nickens/

    1. COLLINS, Leroy - Gov. of FL
    2. John M. Collins
    3. Hi all: In chasing a branch of my COLLINS family from Co. Tyrone, Ireland to the USA, I have come across an article, written about 1980, that reads in part: "Dr. S.J. COLLINS [full name not given but thought to be "Samuel"] was born in Tennessee in 1835. His parents and an uncle had come from Ireland to this country [USA] a few years earlier. They settled in Tennessee, and, somewhat later, the uncle moved to Florida and established a furniture store in Tallehassee. His descendants, one of whom is LEROY COLLINS, former governor of Florida, still own and operate this store." I'm interested in connecting with anyone who knows the genealogy of the family of ex-Gov. LEROY COLLINS. Please reply directly to my email address as I'm not a regular subscriber of DEEP-SOUTH-ROOTS-L. Thanks for any help you can provide. John M. 3. Hi there Bobbie Wright Saw your message below and wondered if a part of my COLLINS in TX material might help. >In checking out Comanche Co., Tx. marriages today, I found the following >two marriages that I need to know about. > >1. Mark COLLINS m 10/1/1889 Elizabeth JAMES > (who are the parents of this Mark) > >2. William L. COLLINS m. 3/1/1860 Sarah Ann WOODRUM > (Is this the son of William Joseph COLLINS and Elizabeth ANDERSON b. >1839 in Tn?) > >I believe he is the step-son of my ggg grandmother Nancy Louvenia >Collins BARBER who was in Comanche Co., Tx. from the 1860's until her >death in 1949. Two branches of my COLLINS family [neither my direct line] came to Crockett, Houston Co., TX, one in 1839 and the other in 1854 and later. There are obvious blanks in the siblings of the earlier branch, but the later ones are known fairly well. In addition while gathering COLLINS info in Crockett, I came across another COLLINS tree that looks very tantalizing. Details as follows: 1839 - Thomas P. COLLINS (1800-1869) arrives in Crockett. Wife Adeline BISHOP arrives a couple of years later. They had one daughter. In 1867 her mother was still living in Tuscombia, AL beside the TN border. - His brother James P. COLLINS (1809-1881) & wife Amelia VANN and son John arrived about the same time and John (1838-1869) went back to TN to get his education in law. Other children known and being followed up. None matches your names. - Thomas' 2nd brother John COLLINS (1811-1890) who married a Miss Wingate in TX also came in 1839. There were children of his second marriage who were born in Athens, Houston Co., TX and tended to move to Dallas. Their names are NOT known. - I think I have determined that these were three sons of Dr. John COLLINS (b.1773) and Elizabeth Pillar (m.1794) from Co. Tyrone, Ire. and understand that there were at least 2 sisters. The sons were all born in Cookstown, Tyr. but I do not know when they emigrated, where they landed and if their parents came with them. 1854 - James COLLINS, Jr. (1834-1887), merchant, came to Crockett to work with Thomas, his father's first cousin. He marries there and has 2 dau & 4 sons, all known in detail. In time he is a partner to Thomas and eventually prime owner with Thomas' only child, Mary COLLINS as partner. 1860 - Dr. S.J. COLLINS (b.1835 TN) comes to Crockett. His parents and an uncle had come from Ireland to the USA a few years before his birth and settled in TN. Later the uncle moved to FL and established a furniture store in Tallahassee. One of his descendants is Leroy COLLINS, one time governor of the state. COLLINS family still owned and operated the store in the 1980s. - S.J. COLLINS attended medical school in TN and had m. Lucy BELL (b.1844 AL) before coming to Neville's Prairie, now Lovelady outside Crockett. They had children William Bell COLLINS (1862-1927) [who m. Mattie NELMS of Pennington, TX near Lovelady], John Robert COLLINS, and Joe, Julius, Frank, Lucy and Anna. Descendants of William are known. - S.J.'s connection to TN and naming of the first son William, leads me to wonder if his father's name was William, and if that person might have been another brother of Thomas above. William is a common enough name earlier in this family. - Why did S.J. chose the Crockett area??? Was it a family connection? - The name BELL appears several times in the names of my known COLLINS family members as Thomas Bell COLLINS, the 4th son of James Jr. COLLINS who came in 1854; Samuel Bell COLLINS, the 2nd son and Susan B. COLLINS 2nd daughter of James P. COLLINS. Does this indicate any connection? I don't know. Does any of this get your attention? I understand that there were many COLLINS families in TN but most trace back to pre-revolutionary days. In the above cases, the families have apparently come from Ireland to TN in the 1812-1830 period, prior to the Potato Famine years of 1845-52. I look forward to hearing from you. John M. 3. Hi everyone, Is there anyone else on this list researching the COLLINS family who came from Va. to Tn and then to Rusk and/or Smith Co., Tx. Moved on into Comanche, Parker, and Hood Cos of Texas? Timeline from 1750's to early 1900's? I found the following information yesterday on what appears to be this family in Comanche Co., Tx. Marriage Licenses: Mark COLLINS m. Oct. 1, 1889 Elizabeth JAMES (was he the son of William Joseph COLLINS and his 3rd wife, Susan C. GINN? This Mark COLLINS would have been b. abt. 1865, so would be the right age. William L. COLLINS m March 1, 1860 Sarah Ann WOODRUM (was this the son of William Joseph COLLINS and his 1st wife, Elizabeth ANDERSON? This William L. COLLINS was born in abt. 1839 in Tn? If so, he was the twin to Joseph A. COLLINS) Also, does anyone have any information on Eliza Harmon COLLINS b. abt. 1845 in Tn. He was the son of William Joseph COLLINS and his 2nd wife Elizabeth HODGES. Harmon is listed on the 1860 Canton, Smith Co., Tx. census as being 15. I have found nothing on him after this date. My HODGES family married into the COLLINS family who married into the BARBERS who married into the EARGLES, WARDLOWS, TURNERS, WALDRONS/WALDEN, ELLIOTTS, BARRYS, RUSSELLS, MURPHYS, WATTS, McMAHONS. Unfortunately, the book on the History of Comanche County, Tx. was being used by someone else, so I did not get a chance to try to tie all of this together. If, you are researching any of these families in the Comanche Co., Tx. area I would like to exchange information with you. The puzzle grows, Bobbie
