    3. Sherry, That would be me! I am the culprit who raised the issue. Since my grandfather maintained that Floyd was a cousin. I am trying to determine if that is indeed true in the absolute sense or just in the sense that they were both Collins's. Thanks to everyone who has responded. 3. A real long shot here -- I'm grasping at straws in researching my one Collins. I have a Catherine COLLINS, b ca 1762, d 1804. Married William JOLLIFFE 1 Aug 1769 - probably in Fayette Co, PA. 2. Being new to this list, I thought I would throw out my earliest COLLINS names to see if I get any bites. ;-) My COLLINS information is pretty scarce, but if I will gladly share what I have on this Central NY branch of the COLLINS tree. Elijah COLLINS, b. 13 May 1799 Tompkins Co., NY; m. Mary A. (b. Jun 1803 Dutchess Co., NY); d. 30 May 1863 Dix, Schuyler Co., NY; b. County Line Cemetery, Reading, NY. Now I will have to sort out the information and see if I can find any connection between this FLOYD COLLINS and my grandfather JOHN HENRY COLLINS. Now the next step is trying to find someone who is researching this line to see how we might connect FLOYD COLLINS with my grandfather JOHN HENRY COLLINS, b: Jan 11, 1876 Ona, Cabell Co. WV; son of AARON COLLINS b: 1847? m: SUSAN CREMEANS b: 1844? Again thanks for the information, and now I will try to see if indeed FLOYD COLLINS is a relative. 3. I recieved this post and thought someone else might know words to song and possibly help more in finding Floyd Collins. Perhaps others know of more mine disasters and could share their info. appreciate your post on the Red Ash Mine explosion. I am related to Collins and Harris. I was raised in Boissevain and lived in Richlands although I do not recall this explosion since I was about 6. I did witness a mine explosion immediatedly after the fact at Amonate VA/WV about 1958. My father missed the 1932 Boissevain Explosion because of a shift change. Your article as printed in the Bluefield Daily Telegraph was very interesting. I read that paper on line each day. Post like yours is why I spend so much time on this list. By the way. there is a song about Floyd Collins and the Coal Mine Explosion. My mom would sing it all the time but I don't remember the words. Thanks. Tom Collins b abt 1849,married Alice Jones, b abt 1853 or earlier. Can find nothing on Tom. Their children were: Sarah, Martha, Rose, Mearkie, Myrtie, Frank, Tommy, Charlie, who went to Oklahoma, Jim, Walter. These people all lived in that area and some of them later came to Florida. 3. OLDEST WOMAN IN AMERICA Mrs. Anna Collins of Troy, Tennessee Is in her 108th year. Mrs. Anna Collins of Troy, Tennessee is probably the oldest woman in the United States. She was born in Robertson County, Tennessee April 17, 1788 and is theefore in her 108th year. Her husband, Francis Collins, was born March 11, 1791 and came from South Carolina to West Tennessee. He was one of the most noted methodist evangelists that was ever in the south. It is said of him that in one of his revival meetings such enthusiasm was manifested that there were in two weeks 845 conversions and 456 accessions to the church. Five children were born to Francis and Anna Collins, two of whom are still living, the eldest being a man of three score and six years. She has used tobacco constantly for fifty-five years and is as strong today as most women at the age of 45. 3. Hi Jerre Mills and an apology to the rest of the COLLINS Roots subscribers. I've been trying to get back to Jerre with the address attached to his posting, but the messages keep bouncing. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Jerre Thanks for your reply. This COLLINS-BELL thing is in a set of names that I know little about. In fact I'm not at all certain that they are connected to my extended COLLINS family. But they come to the right place and seemingly their names Samuel and BELL get used by known family members, so I wonder..... Specifically, I know that all my COLLINS lines were still in Ireland as of 1811. The S.J. COLLINS who married a BELL was "born in TN in 1835, his parents having come from Ireland to the USA a few years earlier" [perhaps 1830?] This would seem to rule out any close connection to your Charles COLLINS and Mary BELL. None of the material I have gives any suggestion of a Native American heritage for Lucy BELL (b.1844 AL). > >In your post to Bobbie Wright, your Collins-Bell connection caught my eye. >We've just recently discovered an ancestor, Charles Collins, who married >Mary Bell, a full-blooded Choctaw. We don't know any more about Charles & >Mary, other than that they had a daughter, Nancy Collins who with her >husband, Joseph Dukes was one of the first Indians on the Trail of Tears >(1831). They were said to reside in Mississippi. I believe this would place >Charles & Mary's birthdates around or before 1790. > >Given that this occurred in Mississippi, it may have no connection to your >Collins, but I thought I'd give you what I have and see what you make of it. >Any idea if there's a Native American connection with your Collins? > >In the History of Mississippi, Volume 4, 2nd edition, is listed the names of >Mississippians who fought in the war of 1812, including William Collins. I >haven't seen this reference myself, just read it somewhere. As discussed above, I doubt that this William would tie into my bunch because of the dates. Since movement of people from Britain to the USA ceased during that war, he would have had to have come prior to it which is too early. Thanks for your ideas. 1. Collins, Wilson and Maury Co., Tenn etc
    2. Shannon Smyrl
    3. My Great-great-grandfather John Harvey Collins was born in Wilson County, Tenn in 1822. In 1915 he gave family info to his grandson Julian Barksdale. The following is what he gave: Thomas Collins was born in ? Ireland in 1735 and immigrated to America in ?. He was a soldier in the war of 1812 under General Jackson at New Orleans. He later lived in NC and Tenn. He was living at St. Joseph, Mo. in 1851, the last heard of. His wife was a Miss Sims William Collins, son of Thomas Collins, born at ? in ?. He married a Miss Sarah B. Wortham, dau of William Wortham, one of the six largest brothers in Tenn. the sic weighing twenty-odd hundred pounds. William Collins moved with his family to Arkansas and pre-empted a farm where the city of Little Rock, Ark now stands. Their children are: Robert F. Collins Nancy Collins Lafayette K. Collins Thomas Collins Elizabeth Collins, John H Collins Julia Collins William Collins died in 1835 and Mrs Collins moved back to Asury County, Tenn where she lived until her death in ?. Her home was 6 miles from Columbia, the county seat of Maury County. Robert went to California, from Abidine (?), Miss., on Tom Bigby River. Lafayette was in St. Louis in 1851. Elizabeth married F. W. Williams in Pontytop Town, Miss. julia never married. Nancy married John W. Fitzgerald of Maury County, Tenn. Thomas died in Itawamby County, Miss. John H. lives in Texas. Obviously there is an error concerning the dates. The account I have was typed. Did a transpositional error occur in the typing?. Many of the Collins have lived a long life, John H. lived to be 97. Count the year 1835 have been 1853? or is there a missing generation not given in the narrative. I first find William Collins in Wilson County, Tenn. It was there William C. Collins married Sarah B. Wortham in July of 1817. It appears He and Sarah remained there until 1821. At that time he sold his land and presumably left for Maury County, Tenn. The father of Sarah B. Wortham was a William Wortham. He died in Maury County, Tenn and his heirs are listed in a deed. William Wortham's wife was listed as Arrena. I have been told Arrena was a Sims. Could this have been the Sims connection to which John H. alluded? Possibly not as there was an Elisha Sims Collins found in Wilson county, Tenn. Mrs Sarah B. Wortham Collins married 2nd Elijah Overstreet 16 March 1836. Sarah B. Wortham Collins Overstreet is found in the 1850 census of Maury County, Tenn. I can find no trace of her of daughter Julia after that time. By 1856 John H. Collins is in San Augustine County, Texas. At that time he married Luvinia Caroline Harrell. Two of his sons moved to Navarro County, Texas. They were Lafayette and William Wortham (Buddie) Collins. While searching for William Wortham's Collins's son, Harvey, I came accross the fact that there was an older Harvey Theadore Collins who resided in Navarro County. The older Harvey was born in Miss. Since two of John H Collins brothers were in Miss at one time I wonder if Harvey Theadore Collins is kin to the other Harvey Collins of Navarro County. Any information on this family would be apprecited. Sincerely Shannon Smyrl Exum@BAsinlink.Com Smyrl@Midland.CC.Tx.Us
