    2. Cornelia Warner
    3. Hi, I have been trying to trace my gg grandfather, Francis Lee Collins, b. Nov 24, 1832, near Birmingham, AL, for 10 years. I'm beginning to wonder if he changed his name, was born elsewhere, or some such thing, because I can't find a thing on him in Jefferson Co., AL. Either I haven't been looking in the right places, or the family left no record of their stay near Birmingham. Maybe they died elsewhere. Both d. bef 1850, names unknown Please, can anyone help me find this man in Alabama? If you are related, please contact me. I have his wife (Mary Jane Peyton) ancestry, and lots on their descendants, too. Please help. I'm at the end of my wits. I have scads of California info., but it gives only crumbs of info on his Alabama history, and after posting about 50 queries over the years in various places, with nary a response, I don't know what to do. Thanks in advance. Cornelia Warner

    2. Jamie
    3. Hi Collins Searchers, I am searching for any information or connections to three Collins men who lived in Richmond County, NC in the 18th century , Jeremiah, Elisha, and George Collins. The earliest I have is George Collins (born about 1725) through a deed transaction for land in Anson County, NC in 1764. There are two other Collins men by the names of John Collins and Thomas Collins in with land transactions in the 1750's Anson County, and I would love to learn how they relate to my lines. There are many other family names in Richmond County, some migrated to middle Tennessee in the early 1800's, while others appear to have stayed in the general region of Richmond County. I thank you in advance for any information and hope to hear from a North Carolina cousin! 3. Hi I'm very new to all of this. What are/were Melungeons? Thanks Lyn Collins lyne@theriver.com Have you considered they might have been Melungeons? Collins is one of their most common surnames. I've gathered from my reading that there was a lot of prejudice against them some places in the south once the Census began classifying them as "free persons of color." I know there are persons on this group better qualified than I to address the issue with regard to counties of origin, etc. Hal Amick

    1. Missing Collins
    2. Ruth A. Collins
    3. I was born in Columbia, Adair County, Kentucky. The older relatives back there were very secretive about our heritage... before they passed away. They would say "leave the dead rest in peace" or "if you find what you are looking for, you won't be happy with what you find". The only thing I could get out of them was that our earliest known ancestor, Zachariah Collins was born (1780-1785) in NC or maybe VA. That his parents died and were buried in Tennessee while making the trip to KY from NC by covered wagon. According to census information in Adair County, KY, Zachariah's first son, Aaron, was born in NC and his wife, Edna was born in NC. But, the NC Bride and Groom Book has no record of a marriage between Edna and Zachariah. I haven't been able to find a marriage record in KY, TN or VA. I keep wondering what the family is trying to hide. Why the secrecy? Rumor is that some of the Collins and Ennis (allied families) boys married Cherokee Indians while in Burke Co., NC. I find it difficult to believe that the family would have been ashamed of Indian blood. My maternal great-great grandmother was one-half Cherokee and my paternal great-grandmother was one-half Cherokee and nobody seems ashamed of that... In fact it is a source of pride! So I wondered if maybe he was black or something like that that they were trying to hide. I've been checking into Afro-American geneology but I haven't found anything. It is a puzzle. Without the names of his parents or even the county in Tennessee where they are buried it is anybody's guess who his parents were. If they had everything they owned packed onto a covered wagon and owned no real property at the time, I doubt that a Will was even probated. Sometimes I even wonder if the bits of information that the family gave me was any good or if they were trying to lead me off the trail! The only independent information that I can somewhat rely on is the census information which points to North Carolina. Among the allied families, I've found the Aaron, Ennis, Sparks and Rippetoes in Burke Co., NC (now Caldwell County) so I suspect that he lived in Burke Co. and made the trip to KY with the allied families... So far, the trail ends with Adair Co., KY. I would appreciate any suggestions anybody might have. Ruth A Collins [rac@azstarnet.com]

Although the clans are no longer the social force they once were, the continuing interest in them is testimony to the hold on the imagination that the sense of clan identity still has for very many people worldwide. However, the desire for knowledge about the great clans and families of Scotland frequently outstrips the ability of published works to satisfy it. The Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia will do much to redress this situation. Beautifully illustrated throughout, and featuring many specially commissioned illustrations, this is the most comprehensive and authoritative work yet published on the subject. It provides the histories and heraldic details of over 300 of Scotland's best known and most famous clans and families, as well as highly informative essays on key elements of clan life and society including: the history and development of the clan system the law of the clan tartan and Highland dress heraldry In addition, an extensive collection of appendices draws together a wide range of information which has never before appeared in a single volume. The Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia is the work of a team of renowned specialists and, in addition to their own contributions, has been compiled and edited by George Way of Plean and Romilly Squire, respectively the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs-, this is the only book to have received the imprimatur of this important and influential organisation. The Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia will become the definitive single-volume reference work on the Scottish clans and will appeal to everyone of Scottish ancestry throughout the world. 385, 512 pages hardbound, dj, cover has a slight crease in it.
